What's wrong with "HoMM8" ?
Why the weird title and not just "HoMM 8" ?

They went the extra mile to ensure any abbreviation of it be problematic. HOE? HOMMOE?

Maybe they wanted people to forget about 6 and 7 and say instead "Hey, Olden Era! Must be something fresh!"
And yes, the abbreviations are... Unfortunate.

Quoteth TV Tropes:
Quote: * Creators might be embarrassed that they have made so many sequels. Alternatively, they might be trying to help people forget how many sequels they're currently on. And in both cases it's for the same reason: in general, the more sequels there are, the less likely any of them are to be, well, good.
* The plotline of the story is non-linear and there are lots of prequels and midquels.
* The studio might feel that a sequel numbered too high might be avoided by audiences that could perceive a Continuity Lockout.
** Related, often when a video game comes to a new console generation, it will drop the number to attract gamers who didn't play the series on the ''previous'' console generation.
* To avoid bringing up previous numbered installments that most people don't want to acknowledge, perhaps even one where you don't want to ignore every detail. Especially if a Star Trek Movie Curse might lead to people assuming the upcoming installment will be bad.
* Requels, where the original movies are part of the continuity, but characters from original movies are reduced to cameos in favour of a new cast of characters as a soft reboot, will often use the same title as the original movie.
Some or all of these might be relevant.

After all these years, "HoMM8" would just be a gravestone.

They forgot the G, secondary language and stuff.
Other than that, it was a conscious decision to not create an Ashan sequel. A very good one.

Yup! Necropolis Growth (H4 map by me), where is Ashan gate, no one player can pass to Ashan gate, when question gate says only Hexis can pass it, but dead in the Ashan gate zone.. You can see skeleton and puzzled Oracles.. So Avenger is better being, thus MWM3 is coming in H8, if very good or I'm playing H3 & H4.. A good Stevie!

Olden is a real word. The usual parlance would be Olden Age, but Olden Era is perfectly grammatical. It's possible that there's some language barrier wonkiness, but I took it to just be a pun.

They're marketing towards people who remember HoMM 3/5 as the golden era of HoMM so they're making it clear it's not a sequel to HoMM 6/7.

Maybe they were afraid to call it Golden Era because of the sheer audacity of it. The franchise's state is at an all time low thanks to Ubisoft, so imagine them coming out with a new game under that title. They'd only invite criticism, on top of raising the bar so high that people would expect them to fail again. So they played it safe.
It's too bad, because to me this is a missed opportunity. I do want a Golden Era Heroes! If it's not now, then when?

You're asking the reason the francise went crap to correct the problem, that would be suicide or mutiny wouldn't it?
They are French.
