Why
Hello people, a little bit of useful information in case there's still people who don't know what hides behind the newest entry in Heroes series. Thank you in advance for your attention to the matter.
We all love Heroes 3. We all want the franchise to succeed. But before you wishlist Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, dear fellow gamer, check this out.
1. The Developer: Unfrozen’s "Cyprus Rebrand"
Unfrozen was founded in St. Petersburg, Russia. While they now claim to be "international" with offices in Cyprus and Serbia, this is the standard "sanction-dodging" playbook used by Russian studios (like Mundfish/Atomic Heart). They didn't move because of moral objections; they moved to keep their access to Western SWIFT payments while keeping their core Russian leadership intact. 2. The Investor: GEM Capital & Gazprom
Unfrozen is funded by GEM Capital.

- The Founder: Anatoliy Paliy, a former top executive at Gazprom—the state-owned energy giant that is the primary bankroll for the Russian Federation's military.
- The Military Link: GEM Capital isn’t just into games. They also own Corund-Cyan, a Russian chemical plant that supplies essential materials to the Russian defense industry, including components for military aircraft used in Ukraine. 3. The "Western Shield"
Ubisoft (the owner) and Hooded Horse (the US publisher) are providing the "respectable face" for this project. They are betting that Western gamers won't dig deep enough to see the GEM Capital connection. Every dollar you spend on this game goes through Hooded Horse, takes a detour to Ubisoft, and eventually lands in the pockets of investors who are actively profiting from the Russian military-industrial complex.
4. The Human Cost
While we wait for a turn-based strategy game, children in Ukraine are waking up to missile strikes funded by the very energy and chemical sectors these investors represent. Supporting Olden Era is supporting russian effort in the aggression against the civilized par of the world.
The Bottom Line:
Do not let your nostalgia be weaponized.
Please. Don't buy the game. Don't wishlist it. Don't fund the russian aggression against Ukraine.
