The interesting thing is that Argentina was better 10-11 than 11-11, after they were down 1-0, so their coach is at fault for not going all-in, say, 2nd half to actively pursue a lead, instead of screwing things up yet again until they would be down 1 or 2 goals.
Their coach is indeed at fault because it was obvious after the France win at the latest, Spain getting just one goal against them in the whole tourney, that it wouldn't make sense against Spain to try and get a goal if down 1-0. Defending the 0-0 with claws and teeth and go for penalty kicks would have seemed like an option, but the necessary physicality brought the real danger of losing players due to red or double yellow cards.
The real selling point, however, would have been, that Spain isn't a counter-attacking team.
In short - Argentina should have risked everything to get a goal when it was still 0-0 and 11-11. It would have played into Messi's strengths as well. And it would have been a chance to put a dent into Spain's passing the ball endlessly around, pressing them with everything they had.
