Speaking as a ten year active duty Noncomissioned Officer with my lowest line score being a 125. and I am currently in the reserves as a sfc. ( E-7 ) For the non millitary types like gooch who probable couldn't hack it so he has to have an outlet for his inmaturity. Your humor has offended me on A personal level, and I do not get offended easy. The millitary is not for everyone, so if it don't fit leave it alone. And private hudson Whats the private stand for?

Redhawk: It's a shortened form of Private First Class William Hudson, a character in the film Aliens. My avatar is a picture of him. It has no bearing on my career, I have never been, nor do I intend to be in any form of the military.

You remember the character's entire name? Exactly how many times have you seen that movie? Oh, and Sanchez is way cooler than Hudson. Her death is way more noble than Hudson's.

Question: How did this thread get so horribly off topic? It's moved from the military to cheating wives getting room keys.

Redhawk:  OOOPS!

bort:  Yes, as you keep having to remind people....and a damn fine one at that.  He just hasn't let his devotion to his county cloud his ability to recognize the primary dysfunction behind any bureaucracy illustrated so beautifully by the parable he has set forth here.  (The military is not immune either, Redhawk.)

Stiven:  ROFL!

Private Hudson:  And it's the military's loss, as I have told you many a time.  I think The Gootch agrees.

Aquaman:  Actually her name was Vasquez.  As for the movie, myself I have seen it 2,476 times and it is playing in the background right now.  Knowing PH as an even more devoted fan, I'm sure he has watched it more times than that.

Sir Steven, I Know he says he is a Marine, dah!!, hence the sarcasume. And no I don't feel foolish ,I feel like a soldier. Private hudson, That makes sence, I do apoligize.
Peacemaker, I have never been clouded in my thoughts or judgement, my head is as clear as the day I left the  assembly line with my other fellow countrymen lol. Gootch, I swore to uphold the constitution, hence the oath, so that intitles you to voice your opinion in any way shape or form  that you desire. If you truly are what you claim to be you should have a lot more respect for your fellow soldiers.Ie. My brotherinlaw who is a 10 year staff sargent in the marines serving in japan. I do believe that this thread will not be profitable for me to write in sence it is making me feel much like LT. worf from star trek. So I do apologize for my extremely harmful temper. I lost count after I could quote virtually every line Hudson says And as PM points out, it was Vasquez. As for Hudson, I picked him because frankly, whilst we may all like to think we'd be brave and macho in such a situation, I think he portrays what most of us would be like, scared ****less and showing it

As for the respective deaths, your point makes no sense, both died holding back the enemy in order for others to escape. I could elaborate further on why his death/final fight helped save the survivors on a par with Vasquez, but I'd probably bore you

As for the name, the trivia behind it is most of the characters are never given their first name, Hicks for example being a notable exception. Most of them are given the same initial as the actor playing them, which lead to the conclusion that all of them shared the same first name. In the case of Hudson this is William (better known as Bill) Paxton. Hudson held the comtech position in the movie, something entitling him to the rank of Private First Class.

Hicks was unusual. During a cut scene before ripley goes back after newt Hicks and Ripley exchange first names, but his was given as Dwayne, Biehn who played Hicks has Michael for a first name.

PM: Nah, all that yelling and running around? I'd rather enjoy life

Redhawk -- if your brother-in-law is a staff sergeant in Japan right now there's a chance he might actually know the Gootch, since that's where he's presently stationed.  Which base is he at?

Ignored Humor

RedHawk,

Both myself and my wife are prior Airforce. She was O-1 and I was E-4. Gootch's sense of humor is practically ignored in most cases. Everywhere that I have been(quite a bit of military bases) mostly just ignore jokes like this. These are the kind of uncreative lackluster jokes you hear so much that it pretty much goes in one ear and out the other.

In some cases when our unit's commanding officer would be visiting he or she would actually give an order for someone to tell a joke of this nature. When everyone laughs it's not really because the joke was funny, it's mostly because the commanding officer is laughing. It's one of those kinds of laughs.

I'm not offended at all by this humor. I experienced it the most at the army-run schools I trained at. It's so old that everyone pretty much ignores it and moves on.

However, there are jokes that are considered inappropriate. Since you are a NCO with some time under your belt I'm sure you're aware of those kinds of jokes that are considered to be inappropriate. They are usually jokes that deal with sexism of any kind or racism. Jokes like the Gootch just gave are so common that it's really no big deal.

Large generalization that is poking fun at each service branch on their distinctive notariety is common wherever you go. Perhaps you forgot that or something. You're an NCO and you should be more than aware of jokes that are considered appropriate and those that are not. In fact, as I recall, I believe you have an obligation to informally make that known to your subordinates as a NCO, especially those soldiers within your chain of command.

Redhawk --

Hey man!  You came back!  Glad of it... I was hoping you'd see my post.

Actually, The Gootch is at Iwakuni, not Okinawa (I think that's the spelling but not sure).  Too bad they're so far apart; at least I think they're far apart...

Anyways, he's an airplane mechanic and Corporal.  Also one helluva human being.  I'm proud to know him; he has been a very good friend to me, and I think if you ever got to know him you'd feel the same.  I do think that many people take his humour a bit too seriously; I think I probably did myself before coming to know him!

Take my word for it though; any branch of service would be better for having more like The Gootch in it.  It's just that he is a fiercely independent thinker, and equally intelligent.  But I have personally experienced the depth of his sense of honor and it is not to be surpassed.  I for one respect him as deeply as any person I've ever known.

Just wanted you to know all that.  I'm sure I speak for many of us when I say that his absence from this forum lately has definitely been felt.

(Hope it was okay with you that I shared all this, Gootch...)

P.S. Redhawk, my comments about The Gootch's take on bureaucracy were aimed at a defense of his use of parable, not really intended as an indirect attack on you or anything.  Sorry if I offended.

BTW --Redhawk, your description of your emotional reactions (Lt. Worf) evoked a rather hilarious image.  Glad you have a sense of humour on all this.  Your apology is to be acknowledged, although I question whether it's ever necessary to apologize for sticking up for one's family when an attack is perceived.  If we're really paying attention, we can see that your initial angry reaction betrays the depth of your devotion.  This can hardly be seen as a deficit in a member of the Armed Services.  Please forgive our irreverence in return!

Favorite Warf Saying

I too, choose Warf as my Favorite. For me, however, his best saying was in "Deep Space Nine" when he was captured and forced to compete in a battle to the death with a Jem-Hadar warrior. He was losing and looked beaten. Hunched over in agony on the floor, bleeding from wounds all over his body, he gathered all his strength to rise to his feet. Standing through great pain and composure he gathered himself. With honor and pride he said,

"Today is a good day to die."

Favorite Worf quote

Another good one is when the borg were attacking earth, Worf was commanding the reliant. his crew informed him that they were weaponless, he ordered them to come about and gave the order " RAMMING SPEED " then he continued with " IT IS A GOOD DAY TO DIE ". Oh my god, i'm ah treky, my brother would be proud. Okay back on the topic of the millitary, When I council the troops that I supervise, I tell them that it is perfectly normal and okay to ask questions about orders, missions, the oath. I also tell them that the actions and choices they make will always effect there future good or bad. Oh by the way I to have my problems with this government and it's policies, Fighting over oil, over taxation, sticking are nozes in other countries business, and i refuse to recite the pledge of allegence, nor do I allow my children to either. This is A real battle for me, My son is in cubscouts and they don't understand how I can be A soldier and refuse to help try and brainwash my children with this hypocritical pledge. If your confused recite it word for word, you should be able to see were it becomes unconstitutional. If  not I wil wait for your post.      New thread in the other side of the monitor, just in case.
