Ichon I can play 2 minutes but loathe it.

95% of the time I play 4 minutes.

Vs you I asked for 6 for 2 reasons.

1) You are a good player and I know if I run out of time even once I will lose because of it.

2) On Beltway I chain through the desert and through the lith simultaneously all the way to purple and then back to fight the dragons all in 7 days having 6 towns in 5 days.

This takes me 12 heroes to do it (1 in the boat) and is the only time I can think of on any map where I need more than 4 minutes to chain.

But when players of our skill level play it would be a shame if running out of time on a turn was ever a factor.

I would feel cheated if I beat you because in end game you were managing 8 towns and then couldn't complete your chain.

Vs most players on most maps 2 to 4 minutes is more than enough time.

That map vs top player is exception.

I actually prefer no TL vs master strategists like yourself.

Time limits.....

I'd prefer to play no time limit because most all the players I've come across generally complete a turn within 4 or 5 minutes (battles included). I prefer no time limit for larger, more complex maps and 4 minutes on medium.

I hate running out of time (I only ever do so on 2 minute games) and I love talking to the other player (unless my fingers are busy elsewhere...) so therefore I have a preference for relaxed, easy going games regardless of the stakes.

Mocara I really like that last line of yours because you played me with no time limit! Woohoo, does that mean you consider me a master strategist?

Yes, it would suck to lose just because you ran out of time. I played one game where that happened. I remember the agony of watching the timer hit "1" when my main hero was just outside my castle and about to get his army from a scout who was inside...

Well, maps like Beltway do require more time I guess- but I can usually chain everything I need in 4 minutes. Not always, but almost always even on big maps like that with 10-12 heroes. Most of my time spent on tha map is looking in taverns and deciding which towns to build up. I'd hate to buy City Hall and lose that town the next turn.

Actually I think I will build a map for players like me. Large with almost all 4th adn 5th level spells removed. The worst artifacts hidden underground so no one can find them in the ocean or in a tombm no Utopias, and many neutral towns with portals or on islands that force you to use ships. I'd prefer mostly might hero battles with a little spell casting. I think Stronghold would be a very competitive town if only it weren't so resource needy that first week. It's a rare map I can get all 7 unit structures and castle with that town, whereas many maps that start with either first 2 unit structures or magic guild level 1 it's possible to get all creatures buildings and castle. Almost my biggest kick from a game is if I can get all the resources needed for all stronghold's unit buildings week 1. I have done it only about 5 times on regularly played maps. On some specialty maps many more times, but those are maps like, "The V" from HeroesKingdoms, or maybe a couple other maps.

I love this discussion on timers.  I recently had a good argument with another player on time limits where the other player was arguing that limitting time makes for great strategizing since you had to prioritize things in your game.  She was holding to 4 mins being what we should stick to like "white on rice."

I couldn't figure things out when she indicated she thought 2 min turns were not preferred for her to play under since it seemed in direct contradiction to her previous claim.  She did say she would play 2 mins since it would "mess" up both our strategies.

My opponent further explained that she would play with an extended timer if we didn't report it to TOH, to which I could not agree.  When I asked how the 6 mins became an option if we were not reporting I got no response but an appeal to let other people in TOH pick a time limit for us.

Taking a little solice in the course of the conversation at that point I quit carring much and went with whatever my opponent cared to impose.

Time limits are the biggest let down for me in heroes.  Quite frankly, I like to be able to talk to my opponent in a game (especially now that I know what Mocara and Shae_Trielle are doing during my turns).  I play this game for fun and to talk to new people from across the world.  There is nothing more boring than silently trying to finish my turn because I'm in fear of seeing "you have 10 seconds left... 9... 8..."  

About two years ago I played a guy for a tournament game and we went about 8 hours without talking to each other.  Towards the end of the game I found out we knew each other and had lived in the same dorm during our freshman year in college.  I've wondered ever since how many other people or other interesting stories I've missed because of time limits.  Hell if I'd had to play time limits I probably never would have found out Greystole lives less than a mile from me.

From a purely strategic point of view I can't stand time limits because I generally like to do a lot of things during my turns and I'm at a disadvantage in that I have basically the minimum requirements to run this game.  I'm one of the few fools who constantly casts view air and view earth - this takes slightly longer of my comp.  God forbid I visit a wizards hut with more than four wizards eyes on the map.  This isn't to say that all of my turns last longer than normal, but that when they do I don't want to have to fear running out of time.

One thing that boggles my mind about people who complain about long turns is their lack of understanding that it's battles that take up the majority of time in this game.  When I get some ass that still insists on imposing a time limit on me I'm going to make sure my battles are done at the slowest animation speed and that everyone of my turns ends with "... 3... 2... 1..."  

I just wanted to rant a bit.

more stupid rambling from Mocara

The more you know the more you see on the screen to do.

The more you have to do the longer it takes.

The shorter the time limit the less you can do.

Which in turn brings the advanced player down to the level of the novice who doesn't see all there is to do.

It sounds simple but it's just true.

If someone is playing 1 or 2 minute turns and they have a faster system or better mouse they have a huge advantage on the other player.

I for one like heroes of might and magic. It's a turn based game. A game where the smarter player wins. Like chess.

If it is reduced to clicking then I think I will just go play AoE or Starcraft. They have better graphics after all.

How very true!

I agree with Moc (again, I seem to have found a kindred spirit). Heroes is a game of the mind, not a click fest and if you're here to play a time limit game, then ask yourself if Heroes is really what you're looking for. Did Churchill ever ask Hitler to 'bloody hurry up man, you're takin' too long'? LMAO, I'd never be so rude as to ask another player to move faster, (unless I get the feeling that they've fallen asleep, lol, but I never let that happen around me).

Sometimes I wonder why people bother with them, but after all, when it comes to the net, time is indeed money, and a lot of people feel a need for time limits because they either can't be on the net indefinitely or they're just boasting about their mouse clicking. I once thought that to be able to play 1 minute turns was going to be a testament to my skill, but sadly, I see that such a thing is just proof of my own newbieness (it's a WORD! It does exist stuff ya! I want triple word score or I'll smash the board! I swear I will! Where's the dictionary?! Go ON! I dare ya!).

Sorry, a brief moment of madness, but back to the thread. If I can't be certain that I've done all I need to do for the turn then I don't really want to hit the end button. And if the time limit stops me from building something then it means that I lose a day, and that day can be crucial when you're talking about dragon cave on day 7....

And Mr ReAnimator sheesh you crack me up! I couldn't ever imagine playing a game with you and not talking! You're like a comedy festival in my house! LOL!

I disagree with Mocara, again
1 min is easier if you know the game better! You have to make fast desicions and if you have played a zillion games that comes easier, you know what to do. You think the novice that usually is unsure what to build, what to fight etc can compete with a veteran?

Well, I can understand that people find it too stressing, me I enjoy it more than anything, its fast and fun! The challenge is to squeeze advanced tactics into the 1 minute.
Sure chatting is more difficult, but still possible during fights and you will finish a few hours earlier so you can chat to your hearts content after game

And btw rules can be great fun! Like no 4th and 5th spells and animate at all try it the final battle will probably be a lot more even...but i guess some people are afraid of rules

it gives me time to think strategies.

of course, 4 min is enough to play in most of time.
but if i play 6 min. game.

I can do this. :

QUICK COMBAT.
in about 70 % of battle, i can select Quick combat.
By switching quick combat and manual combat
in 6 minute game, i am able to make no mistake of
using quick combat in Not supposed case.
But in 4 min game... i can hardly make it.
so,.. in 4 min game,. i never select quick combat
function in fear of such a fatal mistake..

that means.. 6 min game can be much shorter than
4 min game. (It really is..)

Quick Combat

I am one of those people who never chose quick combat, I just can't let it go that I might possibly lose any more units than I absolutely have to. I expect most games vs the computer to be 0 unit losses. Even most of the time in week 1, though it can be difficult to accomplish, Only impossible vs ranged units though, I've had many battles where I loss 0 units all week 1 because I never did fight ranged monsters.

Battles and chaining are what take the most time in my games. I am not much of a talker really. Maybe a little during battles, but it is too easy to give away strategy or hero location when you chat!

As for 1 min turns, the frequent mistake I did was to hit "End Turn" when I really wanted, "Next Hero" after doing that 2 times in the first week, the game isn't as fun... For some reason those buttons appear similar to me when I am in a hurry. Otherwise I tend to agree that 1 min turns are more better for skilled players. Sure newbies know less what to do, but the most important thing in this game is knowing what is the best thing to be doing each turn when you can't do everything. The only problem with 1 min turns is that often because you are slower to conqueoer the map only moving 1 or 2 heroes per turn for battles, the game lasts even to the 2nd month frequently. So it's actually longer in game time. I haven't taken an hourglass and measured it in real time yet though. I don't want to know some things. Too much time spent playing this game already!

especially when playing closed map.

against many of field monster, no casualty is
still possible by quick combat.(when using 7 lvl
units only)
what i hate of Quick combat is only wasting of mana.
u can switch into manual combat in case of that
casualties are expected.

This way of playing greatly contribute on reducing
of time.

i dont like 1min - seems to me as an usual action game. ive tried speed deamon1 and it was 'the hell' (on a map which i knew...)
since a fews months i dont agree on 2min turn in a 2on2 - its no fun to hear last ten seconds and my mouse shows me its ego....
so i agree to mocara (mocara & his echoman ?)

but elio - people are afraid of rules...? sun is moving around the earth...

Since this has turned into a discussion on timers I'll start with that. I prefer 4 min and play almost 100% of my games on that setting. I almost never run out of time, even chaining 8 heroes. I am more likely to go 6 min or no limit then 2 min.

Why do i do it? I am not sure myself, it's not short enough to seriously speed up the games since most time will be spent in battles anyway. The only good thing might be preventing people to spend long times trying to make a decision. Sometimes you get to a point where you have to make one of those game changing decisions and you don't like either option. I tend to freeze then for a short while. And i don't think those few minutes of extra time have ever helped me to reaCh the right decision, LOL.

i also dont spend time looking around the map, towns or heroes during my turns. I come with a plan developed in my opponentd turn and then i execute it. I try to finish my turn ASAP out of respect for my opponent. This does not apply to chatting of course. I am not a great chatter but i like to chat and always find time for it, usually battles, hehe. And i don't mind playing a game 3x as long when its a good discussion type of game

As far as QC i never use it. Porbably because i dont know the game well enough to know when the bettle will end w/o casualties on QC, while i can judge it pretty well in regular combat. Yeah and even if i will suffer no losses i still hate to see half of my mana gone for summoning elementals against some monster pawns.

Shae do you read every post as a personal attack on you?
I don't think people really are afraid of rules, but perhaps a bit ignorant to the fact that some gets more enjoyment out of the game WITH rules as 3DO didnt make the perfect tournament game (though a very good one)

1-4 vs 6-unlimted

I find that the strategies used in 1-4 min turns vrs 6-unlim more creative , reason being this ; In 6 min turns + yes you can plan more effectively but then it becomes very predictable and dull... with 1-4 u gotta think a little faster and your strategies will become some what eratic.

I have played all tl's and really enjoy the game more if its faster pace since it keeps us both on our toes. Since my comp is not anywhere near top of the line it may be a bit more difficult with faster turns but in result of that i have to think faster.

Its all what u want to get out of the game... I will play 6 min turns on a open map just because there is more strategy but it is more boring and predictable where as i would play 1 or 2 min turns on closed simply becuase your not at each others throats right away, and fighting the random battles is much easier and less time consuming unless you Antal(who calculates everything)

My 2 cents
