Quote: Ok, I've been playing a number of TOH maps multiplayer recently and have encountered a fair few problems. First some general ones:
-Bag of gold artifact. This can seriously unbalance the game, esp if one player gets it early on in the map. It should be disabled in all maps designed for multiplayer.
-Random secondary towns. Often the secondary town near a players primary town is random. If this is different to the players main town then there is no problem, but if it by chance is the same, and their opponent wasn't lucky, then they have a major advantage. IMO ALL towns should be linked to one player or another
-Linkage of objects. IMO ALL other objects should be linked as well, unless there is a specific purpose for not linking them. Getting an order altar if you are life is kinda usless, ditto dwellings, spell shrines and prayer shrines. This also has the potential to unbalance the players, if one player gets lucky and their random dwelling is for a creature of their alignment.
Ok, specific map comments. Some of these may just be opinions:
Fallen bridges:
-There is a Mausoleum, crypt and graveyard in the red player's area (at top) but none in the blue player's area.
-Blue player's water-wheel is inacessible because the guards are placed in un-crossable water.
-No linkage of objects.
Heart of Winter:
-Way too many resources. The gold mine in the beginning means that you almost never run out of gold early-game and the doubling up of all mines gives an abundance of resources.
There's more I have to say on these maps (and others), but I will give full reviews in the up-coming multiplayer section of my map review page (Celestial heavens - www.strategyplanet.com/homm/H4mapreviews.shtml).
Without reading any replies may I be so kindly to almost totally disagree with you It is rare to get a good bag of gold but if you do get one WOOOH 250 gold a day I am just so dead I might as well concied he has 250 more gold then me
Random towns was a problem in heroes 3 sometimes but there are ways to work around that little problem & in heroes 4 it's hard even to barely afford one castle & buy troops if you decide to build the other castle.
I do agree that it could be tough if example a player gets a random say 3rd lv dwelling & my opponent got a match but i didnt I think that could be tough on the little unbalance scale.

Therein lies your problem
Read the replies, you'll see why I thought that... I believed I was acting on good advice.
Death Valley
I slipped up on this map too, I didn't even pay attention to the little message which popped up when i "flagged" the ore mine (before capturing a castle)... OOPS 30 GARGOYLES!!! Thankfully my opponent re-loaded the latest saved game. The changes you suggested for making the town battles easier are a good idea. Maybe you should also (or instead) put an altar of combat near the heroes too, makes things much easier, esp for order.

The World is Not Enough map
Map problems on this one.
It is 4player large map, with servere balance problems.
I played it once as nature(set towns) I got blocked by 10 bands of ice demons trying to get a gem mine for my fairy dragons. And then I stopped along the road by Black dragons and stopped again going along the water by dozens of fire elementals.
I figured my opponent was in the same boat till he told me to look in the editor. And guess what he had lots of lvl2's and tons of dwellings that matched his castle. 2 crossbowman, 1 pikeman, 1 angel. 1 champion, 2 monk dwellings I was shocked that this map passed and became a toh map. I had a sprite and elf dwellings. I also discover I had a Black dragon dwelling and a T-bird dwellings.
WTF the map has set castles I get blacks and t-birds for nature and he gets angels and champions for haven!
After looking longer we discovered that Death is about even with Haven for the map. So we reloaded and play it the map that way. However on a large map a big advantage goes to Death and his speed of his troops along with the ability to get sooo many Vamps. No problem with this tho.
The problem is Nature and Chaos(the 4th color) get royally shafted compared to Life and Death.
I would suggest putting some kind of note that the map is only designed to be played 1v1, Life vs death or if u like hard games then Nature vs Chaos(no hard diff setting tho).

Town type plays a big factor from what is otherwise an excellent map. Necro's had both towns b4 the end of 2nd week for me and was great fun. Only ever try to take the 1st town on the 7th day to ensure the strongest possible hero's .
Get the wrong town type and those pikemen will beat u...must be a way to win ?!
This map ranks in the "most enjoyable" for me

I don't know if it's a fair gripe with Death's Valley (which looks set to become my fave 1v1 map btw...) but the lava bit in the middle serves as a significant buffer zone to all attacking armies... except death. I think we all agree death is already overpowered and being able to attack 2 or 3 turns earlier on a small, quick, map, because of no movement penalties on this land area is reasonably significant I think.

Thx Craig Downloaded 1.2 and it works great with all towns.
I also notice that there appears to be no timetable for taking the 1st town. Though it would be wise to take the 2 close towns asap , if needed more exp could be gotten before doing so.

I play order so I'm slightly slower (creatue speed) than other factions. My strat (hard difficulty) on the map is (if i'm playing blue) the 1st town to the left on the second turn, then hire the lvl 1's there, and build mage guild so I can have golems the next (3rd) turn. My army has run over to the second town and got the +1000xp there on the third turn. Then they meet up with the golems on the fourth turn and capture the 2nd town. There are lots of resources around the map and I have dwarves scouting and picking them up so I'm able to have genies by the 5th day. After that I head down, grab the third town (and the xp round there), and by that time I have enough genies to invade (13-15). I've used this twice to completion and once 1/2 way through and it seems to work pretty well.
