Definitely HoMM2! It just has that "Ye Olde"-Style that I love 
The graphics rock and the towns look pretty cool. ALso the campaign is nice. HoMM3: AB is pretty cool, too but the 2nd part is the best imo.
Heroes IV would be much cooler, if the monster-graphics wouldn't suck so bad 
I can' say if the music in HoMM2 or HoMM4 is better, I like both. (In HoMM2, I really like the midi-music^^)

Well no. I played when I was younger but then I really wasn't thinking how I was playing. Still today I can't finish some of the expansion maps.

heroes 4,no doubt...i just didnt like lowering number of towns,thats only thing i miss from version 3.

Heroes 2!
It's just pure gameplay mixed with perfect graphics. Aww... i love you heroes 2! Heroes 3 and 4 are a lot more dry due to going for realistic graphics.

Heroes III is the clear winner for me. It didn't win me over with the complex graphics or storyline. It is simple enough for people who have never even see nthe game before. Heroes IV is so confusing and the makers put so much effort in making the graphics and different stuff for Heroes, I don't even know what that game is.
You look at Heroes I-III and you see the same basic thing. The way combat works, the layout of the towns, the basic gameplay. But when I look at Heroes IV, I don't see the same thing. I see complex magic systems, skills, prisons, monsters walking off in their own group?? What is all of this nonsense? Are we supposed to assume there is a smart monster leading them onward?  . I would think you need some kind of heroish person to control them. I don't think a group of just monsters would sit still and let you control them. They would destroy your mines, towns, and steal your resources for fun .

Anyway, I'd say HOMM2. In my opinion, it's the deepest, most involving of the games. It doesn't have the most units, buildings, or features by any stretch of the imagination, but that's what improves the overall strategy and emphasis on tactics during each fight. Without the difference, it means you have to wathc your next step; you need to gain or keep that little edge you may have over your oppoment. It's that excitement that makes it my favourite HOMM game of all time.

Always nice to have a fan. But seriously, look at the competition.
Heroes 1: Pluses: Easy to pick up, Best for newbies to the series. Minuses: Dumb-as-Patrick AI, newbie-friendly playing makes the game overly simple.
Heroes 2: Pluses: Long games, Presistant AI, Well-drawn graphics, Excellent battling system. Minuses: AI can make terribly stupid mistakes, Not as much variety as later games.
Heroes 3: Pluses: Lots of units, good variety, AI makes interesting combo's. Minuses: Broken combat system, Too many units (most of which are useless), computer cheats.
Heroes 4: Pluses: A good amount of units, each with heavy variety, Nice 3D graphics, great battling system, heroes being able to enter combat adds variety and flavour to the game, ability to travel without a hero helps. Minuses: Zounds of useless features, terrible campaign, mediocre level design, bug-ridden.

Heroes III complete because
WOG!! I am in love with WOG, what can I say.
Great Campaigns, Sandro and his cloak of the undead king...
Combo artifacts in general.
The graphics perfectly fit my taste.
Hero specialities, Gelu and I are joined to the hip.
Quick Combat to speed thru loads of annoying neutrals.
Castle Rampart Dungeon
The Grail, you can have the Golden Goose...
ADICTIVE ADICTIVE ADICTIVE
I do hope someday I'll say Heroes V is my favorite.

Heroes 3 its various addons and expansions have evolved it to what I believe is the perfect game. Engaging campaigns, the best music. The music is always so appropriate for the terrain in Heroes 4 it all sounds the same. Wonderfully original towns and creatures; fortress, conflux and inferno were wonderfully fresh experiences. Heroe specialties gave a hero personality not like plain H4 ones and they all had cool bios and picks. Even the multiplayer works well.
And best of all Random Map Generator, infinate replayability.
My personal favourite game of all time.
Heroes 1 is not so bad either its only real problem is the dreadful campaign story.

H3 the best with :
1. Most number of towns (9 towns).
2. Most Balanced towns.
3. Best units available (Fortress creatures, Scorpicores, Magic Elementals).
4. Most reasonable creature stats (not like the H4 fact that Sea monster can defeat Angel).
5. Best appearance of creatures (H3 fire Elemental looks much more better than H4's. So does most units.)
6. Combination Artifacts.
7. Gelu and Dracon who can upgrade creatures unusual.
