well well well everyone seems to have posted so i will too.
for the record, the best creatures are
Lv1: Skeletons (their numbers make all the difference)
Lv2: Harpy Hags (got to love them, good numbers, just like having a shooter with no range modifer. try them beserked!!)
Lv3: Serpent Flies ( great speed, ok attack, ok defend, but best of all great for dispelling those angels with anit-magic on them) love them for there dispelling ability
Lv4: Vampire Lords (hit them and they just keep coming back for more)
Lv5: the only toss up, Mintuar King or Power liches
MK all round a really great fighter tough hardhitting
PL best shooter in the game spread attack that doesn't hurt your own army
Lv6: easy Dread Knights (a choking double damage that kick in often
Lv7: Black Dragons ( spell immunity what more do you need)
remember to run if you see me coming!!!!

Wow fav from each lv heh  excluding conflux
let see lol
lv1-I think Skeletons would be pretty descent all around ground unit for lv one
lv2-I'll probally say harpy haggers, they may be irritating fighting them but if you have them on your team, then 7th lv enemies can get irritated instead lol
lv3-was a toss up between grands & Dragon flies, but I think Grand elves are very powerful shooters for getting so many
lv4-I say basalisk, they got descent stats & dependable fighters & they are stoners too
lv5-probally thy only one but i love Master Genies & thier random spells lol
Everyone knows my fav lv 6 & 7 creatures & why

Level 1 - skels due to #s
Level 2 - harpy fags
Level 3 - grandies
Level 4 - v lords
Level 5 - cows... of the mighty variety
Level 6 - dreads
Level 7 - ABs

Best in price vs hitpoints & done damage, att/def and extra's (wifout the flux who gives best lvl 2,6 & 7)
If interested: mail me, I have Excell-file wif the complete works.
1 Skels (mostly cause they're free)
2 Wolf raiders
3 Golems (really)
4 Vamps
5 Cows
6 Naga's
7 Blacks
This all of course wif great respect to the costs.
I mean if u have gold enuf build 2 towns and go wif lvl 5,6 & 7 of each town :-P
Hmmm... dun know it by heart anymore, will finish it when I get home.

level 1 : Centaur Captain
level 2 : Storm Elemental
level 3 : Royal Griffin
level 4 : Vampire Lord
level 5 : Mighty Gorgon
level 6 : Dread Knight
level 7 : Black Dragon
level 8 : Faerie Dragon (of course!)
level 10: Azure Dragon

Here's my opinion:
Level one: Centaur Captains
Level two: Marksmen
Level three: Grand Elves
Level four: Crusaders
Level five: Mighty Gorgons
Level six: Efreet Sultans
Level seven: Arch Devils
These guys are me favorites, especially the Gorgons and Efreet's.

Pretty much thats my opinion. I disagree only with silver Pegasus beeng worst, because the speed makes up (you can clean shooters)All level 4 creatures are good, but probably the mags are the least usefull.
And Ancient Behemoth is not the weakes, the Hydra is the worst.

here goes mine
lv 1. master gremlin/imp
lv 2. harpyhag or storm elemental / zombies and gogs
lv 3. iron golem / wraiths and orcs
lv 4. VLs / silver pegasi...
lv 5. mighty moos / zealots(dies too easily)
lv 6. naga queens (frenzy them!) / scorpicore
lv 7. titan (does the most damage in game) / ghost dragon

lev 2: Harpy Hag
lev 3: Stone Golem
lev 4: Vampire Lord (of course )
lev 5: Mighty Gorgon
lev 6: Magic Elemental (far best ratio in game) / War Unicorn in ROE
lev 7: Firebird / Behemoth or Hydra in ROE
by favourite creature (excluding Conflux):
lev 1: Centaur Captain (fast and good offensive unit for its lev)
lev 2: Harpy Hag (fast, flying, no retaliation)
lev 3: Royal Griffin (good tactical unit)
lev 4: Crusader (I don't like undeads )
lev 5: Mighty Gorgon (tough, cheap and death stare spec)
lev 6: Efreet Sultan (fast, flying, cheap, fire shield..)
lev 7: Hydra (cheap, with no ret., multiple attack...)

i would have to say....
Level 1: Centaur Captins (whats not to like)
Level 2: Wolf Raiders (Double attack
Level 3: Grand Elfs (Double shot)
Level 4: Vamp Lords (Life Steal, hands down best)
Level 5: Master Genies (Uber fast, cast spells)
Level 6: Champions (They have charge attack)
Level 7: Titans (Only Lvl 7 w/ ranged attack)

Worst, btw:
1. Familiars
2. Zombies
3. Wraiths
4. Horned Demons
5. Magma Elementals
6. Wyvern Monarchs
7. Ghost Dragons/Arch Devils (I know AD's are better than GD's, but since Inferno is so bad as a whole, they really needed a lvl 7 that could actually stand a chance against their nemesis, the Archangel)
(EDIT - Dendroid Soldiers aren't so bad, and Magma Elementals suck in every way imaginable)
