HOMM4 is better "in my opinion"

though HOMM3C is fun too

I think that any lover of random maps is never going to like homm4 and for those who think that random maps suck, they are going to have longer waiting for new maps because of the graphic detail.

Tree may be right,
I have only played a demo of heroes2 and it was quite impressive. I felt as if I was in a fantasy world and liked the fact that each town was very different than the others.

One of the worst things about HOMM4 is that the 'map-design' is more fitted for landscapes than for worlds.

As an example:
I love the WoT series by Robert Jordan, and have made many maps based on these books for HOMM 2 and 3. But it's almost impossible to do this in HOMM4, since the cities tahes to much space, and so does everything else.

So I would say that HOMM3 is best, even though I love HOMM4, even though it's slow...

Heroes IV All the way!!!,
Heroes IV is by far the best in my opinion,
Its isometric graphics rock!, and gameplay is wicked,
the only thing i liked better in Homm3 was the upgrades,
Heroes IV ROCKS!!

It is hard for me to compare HOMM3 and HOMM4 without also looking at the 2 earlier versions.

In HOMM1, it was based on Might and Magic (seemed to be based on MM4/5 - Worlds of Xeen, but I can't be sure), and was a radical change from the Might and Magic series. It introduced strategy of a kind that had never been seen before. The best parts of HOMM1 was this freshness - this radical change from what had been seen before. The purple dragons were very cute. One of the really *GOOD* things was simply how big the units were. It also allowed you to set difficulty levels for your opponents, which gave you overall difficulty ratings from 5% right up to 100%, and scores to match. This ability was absolutely fantastic, as you would win every game that you played. The question was how well you would win. You'd increase the difficulty a little to suit. However, one of the bad parts was how much better Warlock was from the other 3. There was no situation in which the other 3 could compete, and the dragon was far superior to all others. The magic system was also fun, but flawed, as you had to keep going back to the town to renew your magic spells. A hero with knowledge of 12 could remember 12 lots of Armaggedon, but other than remembering things, knowledge didn't mean a lot.

In HOMM2, I felt that it addressed oh so many issues. The units were smaller, and the game was far more balanced. The introduction of the Titan meant that Dragons were no longer completely supreme, which made a big difference to the game. Also, the Green/Red/Black Dragon, and all of the upgrades in each town made a big difference. HOMM2 was the time of the upgrade. Secondary skills were fantastic, and gave you more control over the game. Even still, there was this big temptation to play the Warlock, since it still seemed that little bit better. The Necromancer, however, in longer games, could be vastly superior, and both knight and barbarian were great in close combat capturing castles quickly. It was no longer simply be Warlock and win. Strategy became more advanced. Also, the spells, and needing Expert Wisdom made a difference too. But the biggest plus in HOMM2 was the upgradable units.

In HOMM3, I adored the use of the 4 magic types. Not only was it great to have them there, but you also had to learn each type for the hero, thus making it impossible for one hero to be an all-knowing magic caster. Moving Dragons into different castles also even further balanced the creatures. In fact, I was able to do comparisons from castle to castle, and they were all virtually identical! This was a major departure from HOMM1 with 1 hero type vastly superior. Customisation for the hero became even greater, and the upgrades became better. The special abilities were wonderful as well. Such as Familiars sucking mana from your enemy and giving it to you, or Silver Pegasus forcing your enemy to spend extra points on spell casting, or the Magi allowing you to cast spells more cheaply. All of this added depth to the strategy. But with HOMM3, the difference between the standard pack and the expansions was enormous. I bought HOMM3 complete, so didn't experience each expansion by itself, but it was a huge benefit. You had people like Gelu and the Sharpshooters, who could shoot straight through things. This was absolutely fantastic. I adored the campaigns in HOMM3 expansion. There was just so much that you could do with it. Also, while the HOMM2 editor was great, the HOMM3 editor was better, allowing random map creation, as well as allowing you to make whole campaigns!

In HOMM4, the big change was the hero being able to hit. This made a world of difference. No longer did you have 7 days to capture a castle. No longer did you need a hero for each lot of monsters. Now the monsters could move by themselves! Now, if monsters wanted to join, but there's not enough room, they can move around by themselves, and maybe sit in a mine to guard it or something. All of this was incredible to see, and really wonderful. Also, the heroes could then change into advanced classes, which was even better again. However, one frustrating thing that I really didn't like was that you were forced to choose between creature types in each building. I like the fact that you can get Summoning and have creatures join your army per day. And a special nature/death one as well. But in a lot of ways there seems to be too much.

I must admit not to have played HOMM4 too much. I really didn't like it all that much. I adored HOMM2 and HOMM3 though. But maybe it is just because HOMM4 is so different. Too different perhaps. Maybe I'll get used to it in time.

Both games,heroes3 and herooes4 are great,but every one in it's way.I play them both,but I play more Heroes4.
Now,in heroes4 the old land of Erathia was destroyed, and the action takes place in another world,of course there are different rules...
Maybe Heroes5 will be called Return to Erathia,a post destruction world, with many different rules, taken from the whole series of HOMMM.

I havent been on the forums since before heroes 4 came out but im back!
You know what... I bought HeroesIV the day it came out,, well as soon as the store opened. i brought it over and called up my cousin (who used to play H2 and H3 for literaly days non-stop i think our longest games took like 30 hours with out stope except to eat pizza. this was a 20 year old with 2 kids )anyways back to which is beter.. at first i HATED with a passion HeroesIV mainly cause i didnt know how to use hot-seat. i assumed it didnt exist because multiplayer didnt. heroes 4 is complecated to get started but... if you want to play single player its 100 times beter.. if you are playing multi-player however i cant stand it. even on cable with my cousin there is considerable wait time between our turns. it sais on my screen it is his turn and on his screen it sais its mine... but hot-seat is great... i love the marketplace (m) so much easier and buying men is alot easier too.

and contrary to what someone had said earlier about the (pathfinding stelth navigation and scouting) beeing terrible I LOVE THAT!!! my hero can walk by strong ennemies and gain exp! true thats only if im alone but i love being able to tell exact numbers of ennemies and whether or not i  would win!

Heroes 4 is way beter... except multi-player in my oppinion

heroes III was probably the best heroes of them all.  In heroes 4 there aren't any upgrades, why?  In heroes 3 upgrades were essential.  Their is a huge difference between a gorgon and a mighty gorgon, or a giant and a titan.  Heroes 5 better have upgrades.  In heroes 3 the battle field was much nicer.  Now in HOMM4 the battlefield is very confusing.  If you have a person who can fly they will be at the enemy in 1 or 2 turns, but a person who walks takes 2-5 turns.  Plus i hate the entire idea of the "fog war." If i wanted that i would play warcraft.
Heroes 1 was ok
Heroes 2 was way better
Heroes 3 was alot better than 2
Heroes 4 is a difficult one to answer.  But its not alot better than 3 (its supposed to be better)  Heroes 4 is more like Diablo or Warcraft.

About the graphics in H IV...they are preety good,(eye candy I may say),but what bugs me is the "good" bright colors/aspect of the game.Is so lighten,so good as in oposed to evil.I'm not going to say that H 3 had better graphics, coz that is not true, but It looked more evil, both the interface and the adventure map,and also the battles.
Like in H 2,when we could choose the interface kind.(I always played with evil interface)
I would have loved it more (H IV) if it had "darker" graphics.
In rest...well that will be another thread.

I much prefer H4.

Recently I had a problem installing H4 on a new PC and for a while I went back to playing H3.

The things that I missed most of all were:
1) Heroes in battle
2) Caravans
3) The "Buy All" button.
