Rage,
I didn't say that they had to be humans. None humans are great, but whenever I think of a fantasy game I don't think of oriental myths and legends. I am not very knowledgable about their myths, and know very little about their culture, but it just doesn't pop into my mind as "fantasy". If it seems very fantasy like....then sure, why not? Of course, why am I complaining? It seems that 3DO has a good start on HoMM 4 and probably won't include a town like this. I could be wrong, but I must wait with everyone else.

I'm not one to judge the orient. Infact, I'm a bit Chinese and I would just like to say that there are reasons why 3DO dismissed the idea of oriental creatures. First, the timing is wrong. The "Age of the Samurai" took place like 600 years before the Medieval times with dragons, griffens, etc. Second, it would be really awkward. The scenery and background of a oriental town would now mix with all the Medieval junk in Heroes (trust me, I know history and crap). Third of all, many Japenese, Korean, Chinese, and other mythology has been taken by the Western Societies. They may be altered a bit, but is virtually the same. Take example: Nagas (Indian Shiva god), gogs (Chinese lamplighters), angel (Korean deity), crusader (Japanese samurai transfixed), phoenix (Chinese firebird), hydra (Japenese fire god).

Well, since this thread is up I'll put few words here.

We have touched the orient. There is NINJA as an advanced hero class in the game - Death + Scouting (although I think that he overlaps with the ASSASSIN).

And there was possibility for the SAMURAI as well.

Nature + Combat = Green Knight
I suggested that Samurai is appropriate for this one (on the Celestial Heavens Forum). But Gus Smedstad liked Beastmaser over this one.

I hope that Samurai will be there at least as a unit.

then what will be Ronin? Samurai who lost his master?

what about following - Samurai can be summoned or you can hire him - and it'll be like HERO - and he goes always with you, once you die or you become captured - he disappears too (commit suicide) - eeh... i guess I'm not too good in japanese fantasy...

My take on the oriental town:
Kadako (tree spirit from Princess Mononoke except a different visualization)- Enchanted Forest
Ninja (ranged attacker... insert all the legends and myths here - Guild of the Shadow
Samuari- (strong melee)- Temple of the Sword
Shao-Lin- (strong ranged attacker... has a Chi spell spellbook) - Guild of the Light
Kai-Lun- (or Kierun, mythical chinese creature that is kind of a cross between a dragon and a lion... they are represented by the little demon statues outside some Oriental resturants and homes)- Jade Gate
"The Red Bird" also mixed up or associated with the Oriental Phoenix (A crane/peacock like bird that has mystical knowledge and wisdom BUT has no self-immolation like the Arabian phoenix)
Water Dragon (Simply because I like the idea of an Oriental dragon portrayed with the power of the river) - Great River

I am trying to render a visualization (if crude due to my lack of talent) of the town in a combination of Bryce and Photoshop... hopefully I'll have a finished product soon (which means in about a week or so

Alright, here's a crazy rook who should be in an Asylums idea:

Lv1:Chu Ko Nu (Crossbowman with many shots)
Lv1:Hand Cannoner (High attack, low defense, low HP)
Lv2:Samurai (High Morale)
Lv2:Assasin (Poision Melee attack, ranged)
Lv3:Mangudai (Cavalry Archer, High damage low defense)
Lv3:Light Cavalry (Fast, Low damage, high HP)
Lv4:Crystal Dragon (High defense, low HP)
Lv4: Priest (Cast spells, High Morale)
If near water: Lv4:Turtle Ship (Very high Defense, Hp, very low attack, can be used as a ship)
Heroes: Summoner (magic) and Ninja (might)

That's my idea.

1. I completely agree with you.
2. There are obviously a large number of people who would support some kind of oriental influence to the Heroes V game.
3. After observing well founded cons to the pros of this oriental Heroes influence it becomes apparent that the solution lies in selective moderation.

Suggestions:

Donot add an Oriental town. Instead of adding an Oriental town simply incorporate an enjoyable and NONconflicting oriental influence. For example, don't create an oriental chi-casting sorcerer when we already have monks and zealots. Don't create an oriental flaming bird when we already have Confluxion firebirds and phoenixes.

The most important aspect of incorporating an Oriental influence into the Heroes V game should be to consider the issue of nonconfliction as its highest priority and fan enjoyment as it's second priority.

Perhaps add some type of elongated water dragon of the sea and rivers called a leviathon might be a good idea.

Perhaps add upgrades to rogues that might become ninjas with the ability to cast shadow-class magiks.

Perhaps incorporate an upgade of items or armor using the most famous and highest quality steel: Wootz Damascus Steel

Perhaps add a new neutral creature/monster called the White Bengal. A huge tiger with two attacks from its massive paws. Maybe its special ability if upgraded in your town or researched would be to give +1 or +2 to hero movement by mounting the tiger.

Perhaps add a new neutral creature/monster called the Ravenous Panda. It's attack might push an oppnent back by 1 or 2 tiles. It's upgrade might be called Adult Bear that is able to chew through armor and spit it out maybe losing its knockback ability.

Perhaps give peasants an upgrade to a class called Samurai Thug. Maybe the upgraded peasant gains armor and has the ability to strike through targets much like that of dragon breath.

As you can see I thought of some relatively small incorporations for an oriental influence in the Heroes V game because it is clear from its loyal fanbase that people don't want too much of an already existing mythical creature or person. A true Samurai is the Japanese equivalent of a European Paladin.

Here's a really kool pic for an Oriental Hero:
