HMM3: Stronghold weakness?

I've read some topics here and you seem to behave much more mature towards each other than I've seen on other game forums, this is my first post here so be patient with me.
To the point:

I was playing Stronghold yesterday. I always seem to win with them and have always believed their strength is in their cheap and fast build. While they do not have the strongest creatures around they are reasonably priced and it's no problem getting Behemoths the first week playing Hard difficulty. The Behemoths is the heart and soul of Stronghold, by no doubt the most important Stronghold unit. As every experienced player knows, a Behemoths strenght lies in its attack (and it's ability to decrease the enemy defence a lot). Which means you have a great advantage(larger than usually) with attacking first. What I see as an unsolveable problem is when fighting any high level very fast units(dragons, angels, devils etc.). The enemy gets the first move and can usually damage the Behemoths with a spell and right afterwards attack with their fast 7 level units and your Behemoths will suffer big losses. I'm no expert at Stronghold, but this seems to be a weakness which bothers me a lot. If anybody have any counter strategies I would like to know. I've thought about this issue for some time now and can't seem to find any counter-strategy to work.

Thanks for your attention.

While the relatively low speed of the Ancient Behemoth is a weakness of the Stronghold, the move you describe is nothing to be afraid of. If your opponent puts his lvl7 creature stack inmidst of your Stronghold troops to hurt your Behemoths, they won´t live to see the next combat turn. In addition, you get a free spell (Expert Haste would be the most obvious choice).

And i May ask, how many times do you find the red orb or even recanters on a map.

Of course the relic and artie happy set maps you will have a much better chance of finding them, However on randoms (which i have played tons) the recanters and red orb rarely appear.  They appear even less when you really need them.

Therefore that strategy is at fault, more luck than strategy.

When i play stronghold, mass spells are a must, either haste or slow or your dead.  Resistance is also a very valuable skill for SH.  Concentrate on combat skills and one school of magic to give you all the advantage you can.
Barbarians are by far the best combat oriented heroes in the game.

Stronghold also allows you to take dwellings much earlier than other towns, with Behemoths on day 3 or 4, week 1 can be quite good.

The downside of Stronghold is the build(unless of course you play the extrememly rich set maps), it is very difficult to build ogres and Cyclops due to the massive requirement for wood and crystal.  Typically a Behemoth build with castle is all you can ask for week 1, even that can be hard on certain maps.  Just hope your opponent gets stuck with Tower on a poor map.

agreed, i wanna change the creature from camp for creatures from banks tho.

Also not buying out wolfies in early stages of game is clever since they will come very handy in high numbers at end of game.

Try playing random maps with templates that give lots of griffin cons then replace your goblins with angels. if you can find an upgrader or castle to upgrade you will be laughing, especially with some speed arties to go with it. Failing that always have expert earth and armour and let mass shield be your first spell to minimise the damage from future first strikes.

at randoms i usually rather replace angels for cyclops, since the usual lack of crystal than goblins.

One thing i forgot last time tho is upg. beths as soon as possible...300hp is really alot compared with 160. Which means you should lose no one when fighting map easy.

I say buy them every time a month is coming to an end - we don't want a plague to consume our long gathered wolves, do we?

why do every1 like red orb with stronghold. renclanters is great but red orb ... it sux for strong. nothing reaches round 1 and usually u cant build cyclops so it will be shoot to pieces after opponent blocks its ranged units and strike with lvl 7 and maybe even lvl 6 for free round 1 ..

for free as in strikes on a sucky unit at end of round

One reason is because of the attack power they Barbarians can recieve & without magic, Stronghold can be the most feared castle & sure AA can do thier cheap Hit the shooter & run or the wolf raiders etc but Stronghold so powerful with all of the att power they recieve,
Without spells it can be really tough.
Stronghold is one of the slowest & leadership may work well if that is the case.

Just suggestion of why they would prefer red orb because I know Tactics can come awefully early for a barbarian as well.
I think Red orb can work as well as the recanters if not better having tactics, because with tactics, all but Ogres will reach the enemy & they have no choice but to rush on ya.
Also I know that Haste comes early as well & would be great to have the first initiative in round two.
