Question about random map "standard rules"
Hello,
today I played a game, where my opponent had suggested a set of rules: No Diplomacy, no Fly/DD, no Carthographer, No Grail.
When I spotted a Hill Fort, I asked him: "What rules are we playing again?" And he answered: No Fly/DD, no Cartho, no grail.
I went for the Hill Fort and into his area - with 3 Gold Dragons and 4 Archangels. Then he protested: Hill Fort is forbidden, too. Itīs a standard rule.
In my opinion, whatīs not explicitly ruled out is in the game. What do you think about it? Is the Hill Fort so much of a taboo that it doesnīt even have to be mentioned in the pre-game rules?

If a rule is not mentioned before the game, it's not applied to the game.

I always ask my opp. "can I use this hillfort/dd scroll/spell binders hat?" if we agreed on "NO necro, flux, carto, diplo, grail etc. assuming that hillfort is included into "etc." part as dd-fly are even though they are not named one by one.

bah... rules..
I may be a minority here, but I don't like to set rules when playing HoMM3 multi (I used to do that you know ) ...when the opponent wants to play with rules however, what ever is not excluded, is in the game... even DD/fly

I used to like rules, but now I dont really prefer any
Altho, with randoms you need rules, cause they got too much stuff that will unbalance it.
But IMO if you do not specifically spell out the rule, then its not valid during the game. Ive seen the best of people whine about some discrepency in a rule

last time I checked
ToH had no rules.. in fact, it was a policy... not just Ves & co being too lazy to set them..
IMHO, it is up to the players to agree or not on rules...

if u didnt agree on a rule b4 game then technically its oki, depends on players and how bad they want the points lol, although any random game most players will play: no dd/fly, cart, grail, diplo, necro, hillfort, lvl 4+ scrolls, no red rush or hit/run. to be honest, toh should set rules, i know its not going too, but would save alot of players trying to trick other players by there interpretaion of the "rules" lol. imo there should b only 1 rule... no rules, then there is no confusion lol.

TOH had a random tourney awhile ago
Kings of Random I think it was? and people used to just say KOR rules before playing, and the rules were right there.
Perhaps bring that back...its a way where TOH does not have official rules, however people will know what the rules are specifically since they will be spelled out based on that sub tourney.

Thank you for the numerous responses.

Hello Madmartigan,
I find asking "can I use <<specific thing>>?" to be a bit problematic, because it usually leads to opportunistic answers.
When I spotted that Hill Fort very early in the game, I asked my opponent what the rules are. He explicitly said: "No diplo/cartho/grail, anything else is allowed".
He used Galthran as his main hero, and after starting with Dungeon built two Necropolis castles - one of them belonged to AI and had Town Hall and Liches built - itīs not like weīve been playing with the usual "etc."-rules.
Getting to the Fort required a radical change of plan and took me 10 more days ... back then I couldnīt at all be sure that I would find it at all, and that I would be able to beat its guardians.

Judge it for yourself
If the rule is not mentioned before the game, this is how i handle such situations.
Hillforts:
If I find a hillfort week 1 or 2, I don't use it, because I know this will give me an unfair advantage. However, if around week 4 or 5, I will start using it if needed. By this time, my opponent has had more then enough time to have his/her 7's upgraded. If we are playing a template that has a chance at week 3 meeting or a extremely poor map, i won't use it at all. If I do find a Hillfort ever though, I always ask my opponent at that moment I find it, (if not stated at begining of game), "What are you feelings on Hillforts?" But most of the people I play are trusted friends or people that I know are trustworthy, so I know I won't get the "Oh yeah, no hillforts too" crap, because he/she doesn't have one. I know I will get a honest and truthful answer about how they feel about it. If I do end up in a game with somebody that uses game "glitches" like weak guards etc... I just blacklist them and never play them again, there are plenty more people around to play that are fair and trustworthy.
Spell scrolls:
For example, if I fight 15 zealots week 2 for a scroll, and find out it is implo, I put it in my backpack and leave it there, i didn't earn that. But if I fight 40 mighties week 3 for it, yeah I will use it if needed, because imo, i earned it that time. The only time I will use a weakly guarded spell scroll is if I get into another area and find a Admiral's Hat for example, or any major crap art. I will then fight its guard, leave the hat where it is, and start using the scroll from there on out if needed. Kinda a substitute/switch in a way.
No Necro:
No necro for me = no haversting skells, no necro critters at all. Which means, no building vamp lords and running around racking up experience (and actives. lol) If I get necro critters in a box, for example on extreme, they get dismissed that day, no fights are fought with them, dismissed as soon as I get them. No necro for me is NO NECRO ANYTHING.
These are just a couple of examples. There is no such thing as "Standard Rules." Everybody likes different things. Biggest thing is don't cheat yourself, if you know you are giving yourself an unfair advantage by using something, why do it? I personally don't find it fun to demolish my opponent (I rarely win anyways. lol) Very close games with a great final battle are far more fun then beating you opponent into the dirt.
Bottom line, you know weather or not you earn something in a game. If you didn't earn it, don't use it. As for no fly/dd, most of the templates I enjoy are ruined by them, so rarely get a chance to use them anymore. I would get more indeepth on that if anybody wants me too, but I dought anybody really cares, no dd/fly is just about used by everybody.
Just my opinions

No hillfort should be automatic just like the no H&R or Red rush rule, just so cheap which hill fort can be a game winner but not always but can help you rush your oponent having like 5AA instead of just 5 angels.
Market place is not so bad but the hill fort just should be automatic but thats just me & how i play with my friends.
Thats why I dont play many players so I wont have much hassle.
