Please only Philosophers read this thread! No on else! I'm serious...

Sorry that I coppied OldTimer's tread name, but it just works so well for the topic!

Here is where we nominate what we want to argue about, that just argue, it's fun.
First of all, please don't nominate something unless it's something that we don't realy think about, it's a lot better that way because you have to think more, anyways...

I nominate this quote (my own): What does gravity taste like?

Anywon else?

it will make a sound, because something will be there to hear, weither or not it be human ears, a ant will be there, or flies. either way something will hear it, people are just to egotistical to realise that we aren't the only things on this earth with ears or senses. (ants feel the vibration of sound, so its like hearing)

as for the gravity taste like thats a odd question but gravity would most likely tast like nothing, however it may inhanse the taste of anything in your mouth (saliva, pizza) due to the fact that if there were to be more gravity, the food would put more pressure on your taste buds, however this could easily work the other way around as well, if you put to much pressure on your taste buds you may not taste anything at all. to test this out would be to put salt on the bottom of a spoon, place it on your palat softly and tast the salt, then test with high gravity (push down on the spoon) do you taste the salt more or less?

My question is, how can humans truely test the speed of light? even if we were to test to see how long it takes to go from one place to another (you would need a tower and a powerfull light) how can you guage the true speed? for the machinery to send the information from the start point to the finish point to start the timer, and then from the finishing point to the start point to stop the timer, or even just one of the two, light travels at a theoretical speed of 1 lightyear per year (ok thats taking the easy way out speed of light according to http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/guidry/violence/lightspeed.html is 299,792,458 meters per second ok so if you wanted to test it the farthest you can see from one point on the ground to another is 24 kilometres aprox. 15 miles. so you want divide 24,000 metres max area with 299,792,458 and it gives you 0.0000800553828475564918981384114739 seconds, now that is near nil speed right? computers canot send information that quickly nor can it even prosses it, how did scientists calculate this speed?  lets say you had a lan and the two computers are next to eachother the fastest connection i can have with two 2 GHz computers at 100 Mbps us aprox 5 ms time to connect, couple that with the fact nothing can travel faster then light you canot physicaly test the speed of light, therefor its a lie the whole speed of light, its a number that nobody could prove wrong with factual numbers so it was taken for true.

"Was once quoted on a rainy day"

Is there such proof that gravity exists? How did they run testing. And what did their methods prove? I dont know and arent interested to read too much. But I imagine if we can taste it, it tastes like what we always taste with the subtraction of saliva.

I think saliva has no taste, to us, because we taste it all the time and fail to distinguish tastelessness between tasty things

Interesting.

Gravity?
Anyway for reasons about a close incounter with gravity, I have proof that gravity tastes like realy salty mangos, The part wich makes me think about is is when I was falling of the roof of my house, Everything went blurry and my mouth tasted like salt, but magos at the same time, therefor gravity tastes like salty magos.

Tree noise?
Well... it moste certainly makes a noise because when something wakes something like my keyboard, the object that was hit and the thing that hit the other object both vibrate making sound waves wich may indeed be picted up by and animal or something, but if there isn't anything to here it, it still makes a noise but we just don't known what it sounds like. Simple eh? But if the tree indeed did not make any vibrations or did not travel fast enough, it would not make any noise what so ever.

New Nomination
Where do the socks in the dryer go?
This is something that has been bugging me for a while, I just shrugged it off as the socks going through those holes around the edges, but when I checked they weren't there. Is the something that we don't know about dyers? And if so why are they holding it back from us? We have the rite to know everything about whats going on inside our appliences.

Your post made me laugh.

I wouldn't say that this question has anything to do with philosophy because it has a definite answer, and it is purly scientific.

The modern speed of light was measured by a scientist named H. Hertz (not quite sure if I got the right name) who used electromagnetic waves and measured their speed (the speed of the waves in this case is equal to the speed of light).

For older and simpler methods to measure the speed of light (that brings me back to my grade 11 physics class where all of these experiments were described) can be found on the internet, on sites such as http://www.what-is-the-speed-of-light.com/fizeau-speed-of-light.html. Browse around this site and look at the various methods. They are quite interesting.

Well, for this to be a philosophical discussion you would have to explain your views. I think that machines can think. Not yet, of course, but they have the certain potential to do so. I think so because I see humans (I suppose we all agree that humans think) as a highly complicated machine.

I have a few suggestions:

1. Are machines our slaves?
a) Do they need to be given their freedom?
b) If you build a machine, are you its father or its mother?
c) Should machines be allowed to vote?

2. Is it morally right for us to debate philosophy when theres so much that needs to be done pragmaticallly in the world?
a) Are our needs more important the the needs of otheres?
b) Are other people worth caring about?
c) Should other people be allowed to vote?

3. Democracy
a) Do we have elected officials to eliminate the need to think, and let them decide for us?
b) If the majority 51% thinks we should torture the other 49% population until they die, should we do so?
c) Who decides whats ok for the majority to decide and whats not?

4. Can I have some cookies?
a) please
b) just one?
c) come on.. IŽll be your friend..
d) thx

no we cant give machines freedom, they will learn to rule the world and kill us all, we do not want death do we? machines would "grow" to be perfect and in doing so realise we as a speciese can never reach their potential and remove us from their space. (i.e. thye kill us) lets keep them as slaves to save our own lives.

How do you know other people even exist? could be a computer system writing information on a computer screen. (as i read here) and everyone acts according to what the master computer sais, i.e. Reboot life or Matrix Style. therefor its not a mater of our needs being more then other "peoples" needs its more a matter of not helping those i do not know even exist.

Yes we must kill the other 49 percent. in a true democracy, its even been done in the the past in many many nations, The USA Canada, all over europe in WWII. we are not innocent to these things, its quite sad really. Trick is not to put ourselves in this situation.

no you may not have cookies, you may have 1 cookie, why do you need many? that is simply greed taking over. you should not ask for more then you need, simply ask for 1 and you will get 1, ask for 400 and you will get 0, the trick is everything in moderation.

my question...
at what point do people start to begin their lives? at conception? at birth? when they first start to talk?

..."Never quote me on a rainy day"

I think that this is a good one to argue about.

Why not? It seems like it's raining, but nothing bad has happend yet. But on the other hand, something bad could happen. But scientificly just saying doesn't men it will happen, but there is a chance that something bad will happen because more bad things happen then good things in life. But if we look at my life wich is almost done, a lot of good stuff has happend, but then again I only remember the realy bad stuff and almost all the good stuff.
See, being a pestimist would help me think of better reasons of why this quote is rite, but being a philosopher/critic it makes me think of better things then normal.
Anyways... the possobility of my internet crashing is pretty good since I hotwired a ancient one to use the net, but then again this chair is all wobbly and could break wich would be realy bad too, seing as I'm not realy wishing to have big lumpe on my head.
But another thing to be worried about is being food poisened of getting ecoli because ontario's govenement is complete **** so any number of things could happen.
But then again there's always the good old-fashion nuclear war starting and everything bad happening at once.
So that's why the "Never quote me on a rainy day" statment is almost true.
And I still have more proof.
If it's raining, there's a possiblity that somewon could get shocked by electricity or there'd be a power out, or lightning could strike a hydro pole and overload all naboring houses and frie all electrical appliences causing extream pain or death to anybody near.

So yah see philosophy isn't just about making up stuff to back you up, it's about getting your brain in gear and thinking real hard about something for a realy long time.

Does anybody have any way of challenging me? come on speak up, it's easy if you've been trying this all your life.

the lable "not supreme" can be applied to anything we humans made.. (from politics to computers)

Also heres something you can try to "argue" with me and others.. The normal family is male & female parent with their biological kids. Everything else, is normaly different

Reason # 1
man and woman make a baby. They Raise it, and it grows up usualy to find a wife and make kid(s)

Reason # 2
Human reason, has afflicted the world with a belief concept, that Man & Woman is normal, and the normal family is them having a kid and loving eachother.

Thats the belief we natrualy evolved to for a Reason (which is #3)

here is another..
If humans could  only see shades of black and white
Or
If there was no color, only shades of black and white
Do you think the prime essence of our modern economy would be the same?
(And of course, this excludes the use of colors for art so dont give a weak awnser like that. "No because our movies would look diff"

I mean, do you think the main essence of economy would be different if all was shades of black and white?)

I'll tell you this, humans would have a few  words for different shades.
