Why can't the art style be normal, instead of this overdesigned shiit
Why are they trying so hard?
It seems that nobody gives a snow about simplicity anymore.

I think this is as toned down as it's going to get. I was honestly surprised that this simplification happened at all. Somehow I can't put too much faith in Ubi design decisions anymore.

Mate not a single comment has stated that in this thread.
Ironically original devs cared very little about lore and it ended up being rather unique and good. Sure they had few ideas that persisted over the games but realistically speaking its full of snowups and retarded ideas that ended up being more than sum of its parts. I mean we weren't that far from being able to kill dragons with chainsaws in HoMM3.
Are current developers responsible for lore trying too hard? Case in point, why monk is called chaplain? Why not angels but seraphs? No comment on Lanwhatever or new resource names is needed probably. If you look back at older HoMM games they had very simplistic names for pretty much everything and it served its purpose. Do these developers have to come up with X amount of new names every day to get payed? Overall, Ashan (and most of the "new" lore in various games) feels very artificial due to designers blatantly trying too hard.

My issue with Ubi's take on the franchise is that they're going down the beaten, tired, waaaay overdone path of edgy and dark, overly complex designs when 3DO's M&M universe was the opposite of this... and I loved it. Why? Because literally everyone else was and still is doing what Ubi's doing--yet, with 3DO's M&M, we got the classic mythological look. Vampires with capes and widows peaks that had Romanian accents. Hell yes! Goth Arthas-from-Warcraft wannabe "vampire" knights with swords? Get the hell out of here. The classic mythology look was part of the fun. You could literally call Ubi's "vampires" anything else and it wouldn't matter. They keep trying to be original, but no one cares. Heroes V did a decent job of it, but with Heroes VI, they just went way too far. Now they've gone full retard. Shame.
I guess the argument could be that they're trying to reach more mainstream appeal, but I doubt the designs of trying to be any of the other dime-a-dozen, uninspired art style out there has to do with it. And besides, let's face it... Ubi has failed to grab the larger audience and has only succeeded in alienating original franchise fans in the process. They need to stop trying to pander and show they care about their fans rather than ignoring us, attempting to give the everyman what he wants, and hoping we bite.

It all depends. In terms of gameplay, Heroes V was a safe start to grab attention of former fans. In Heroes VI they experimented to see what changes would be accepted by fans and in Heroes VII they make a comeback to Heroes V approach with a little bit of sprinkle from Heroes VI. In terms of artworks Heroes V made mistakes by overdoing some creatures (like angels or Wraiths). In Heroes VI there was another problem - excess concentration of one colour in particular faction (like purple in Dungeon). Also, they deleted some fans' favourite creatures (like bone dragons in Necropolis). As seen from recently added pictures, I think they took a right direction which won't rather repeat mistakes ofprevious iterations.

Compare those artworks with these one their site (see all creatures): Haven
Do you feel any better, happier? The artwork you show has different purpose than the artwork of units, which is really good. In addition, there are some excellent artist at deviantart, there's no need to generalize and degrade them.

Well, duh! People have been wanting that since before H4 and while experimentation is fun and all, I can see why someone would just want that legend but remade into a game from this millennium.
EDIT: The current nostalgia craze probably helps as well, but what do I know?
