Haste vs. Slow: which will prevail?

In many games, you end up with haste and/or slow in your 1st level mage guild.  Both of these spells give you the change to control the battlefield, either by extending your reach as well as getting the possibility of first/last strike for spells, or by limiting your opponent's manueverability.

My question to you is, if you have a choice, which would you take, and when would you choose the other?

Discuss.

depends on town, usually i want air and earth magic to have both

haste is a must for:
- stronghold and fortress (heavy but rather slow hitters like ogres, behs cows and hydras)
- and specially necro, go skels go, while they dont need  slow at all usually

slow is a must for:
- Tower, to keep enemy away from shooters and genies
- Castle, 2 shooters, also archs stay fast even if slowed,
same goes for dungeon which doesnt need mass haste so bad

as for the spells in basic, single haste is by far more useful than slow, while adv. and mass slow is a greater help in cleaning the map than mass haste in my oppinion

Depends on the town and the situation. If I'm attacking a castle, I choose Haste because I want to get in the castle as quick as possible. If I'm being attacked in a castle, I choose Slow because I want to keep them out as long as possible. Otherwise,

Castle - Slow (good shooters, quick troops for the most part)
Rampart - Haste (Dendroids and Dwarves need to get into the battle quicker, although Dendroids make excellent Elf guards)
Tower - Slow (so many troops that you want to keep out of melee as long as possible)
Dungeon - Slow (decent shooters, more likely to keep troops close together for the Dragons)
Inferno - Slow (plenty of quick troops, more likely to keep troops close together for Magogs and Cerberi, more rounds before melee makes Magogs useless)
Necropolis - Haste (only one shooter, Zombies are okay once they arrive in battle)
Stronghold - Haste (big troops need to get into battle quicker)
Fortress - Haste (see Stronghold for reasons)
Conflux - Slow (most of the troops are too frickin' fast for Haste to do any good anyway)

There is no contest that Slow is far more superior than Haste if it's on expert level.

Expert slow will halve all enemy's troops' speed and expert haste only adds 5.
There's hardly any case where slow can't replace haste in usefulness but not the other way around.

With Stronghold I prefer Haste, but with most towns, and against most armies, I'd prefer slow.

However, Haste would be better against an army that is mostly shooters.

Haste

I think slow is taking a big risk to try it against human opponents. Slow is the best spell by far to have when clearing the map however, for utopias haste is better.

I think the only time I might use slow in a battle vs a human is if I have the fastest creature and I wait, then caste slow so almost all my units can get into battle before any of theirs move. Of course having both mass haste and mass slow is very powerful, but almost everyone has  one of those schools, or water magic. If you have only mass slow and your opponent has it too and they slow you first, they will probably get more benefit from it, unless you negate it by casting mass haste.

In single spell usage(no mass) haste is still best initially- but, against large single stacks of creatures or it might be very important to slow a particular creature when fighting the AI or even in early battles vs a human.

Many times fighting castle forces it's incredibly important to slow their 3 angels of week 2 rather than haste one of your own creatures who still can't match that speed with the haste.

What kinda question is that?

It's definately a case by case situation.
Cast either one which would better suite your immediate situation..
There is an infinate amount of situation's in heroes, it's easier to use good judgement, than to say "im only gonna use slow", or "haste is the only way to go".

Just get 'em both, and use your ****in' head

Oh, it depends completely on the situation!

If the enemy is Inferno, typically fast units, I will cast Slow. However, if I'm playing with Rampart, I will cast Haste on my own units, those dwarves and esp. Dendroids are a kinda slow.

However, if my units are fast and I have no tactics, at expert level of AM, I will cast Haste to let my army reach the enemy first. I would do this in huge battles.

When I fight creatures, I usually cast slow. It works better with me.

against human opponents...

it is stupid to cast exp. haste first, because they can simply cast exp slow on all those creatures, which negates your spell. (or slow first, and then haste)

so against humans, whenever you want to cast one of these spells, wait a turn and let your opponent cast the first spell, so that he cant just negate your spell.

theoretically

if you had no choice and it wasnt a matter of what situation you were in and you had to choose....id go for haste, get in there and attack quickly and hopefully slay

But of course i agree that it varys depending on the situation, generally though if im stronger i prefer haste, less chance of the opponent running away, and if im weaker id go for slow, except if they had range attack when haste would be better ....

Ahhh too many different choices!

bigger map -> later meeting with human players -> more neutral armies = more need in expert slow (even non-shooting armies e.g. Stronghold need it badly)

smaller map -> quickly meeting with human players = less need in slow.

Crag Hack + tactics + mass haste = BOMB!

P.S. expert slow means that you have expert Earth...in general Earth is better then Air, more useful and powerful spells

For cleaning the map  - 95% of the cases slow is better. Actually early expert earth and slow could win games. But if you talk for the main battle human vs human expert haste will ALWAYS beat expert slow unles there are big difference in the armies. You just wait till the opponent cast his magic (whattever it is, even slow), and than with mass haste the game probably will be over in 2 turns.

my vote goes for slow. slowing certain creatures essentially removes them from the battle, while haste is awesome the effects of it are not as drastic as slow.

A combination of haste or slow with the secondary skill "Tactics" would be perfect for any town.
The hero could positionate the hand-to hand troops to get them near to the enemy or could positionate the ranged troops foward to eliminates the penalties. This would give a fantastic advantage in the battle.
