Writer's Guild
Welcome to the Writer's Guild.
There are only a few guidelines to being a member.
1.) Critique the works of others. Tell them what is good and what can be improved.
2.) Be a mentor. Show others how to improve their work.
3.) Have an open mind. We are all here mutually to improve OUR writing.

Check out this website. Some of the most prolific writers are judges to this writing contest. I think all of us who take writing seriously should make it a goal to work really hard and submit a work of which we can be proud. The best part is that the contest is free and we can submit pieces of writing up to 4 times a year.
I'm definitely going to do this.

Hmm, it may help to have something one can be inspired to write about though... What kind of topic could we pick?

To keep this thread breathing:
Think of your audience. who are they? write right to them.
Care: if youre bored, why should your reader care? write as if your topic were the most fascinating subject in the world.
Know your topic: do your research. knowledge puts confidence into your voice.
Keep on subject: main ideas are clear, focused, and compelling; they are developed by strong support and rich details that are on topic and provide strong, accurate, and believable support.
Have a strong voice: shows a deep sense of involvement with the topic. the writing is interesting and serious. the voice is clear and the individual reading feels he/she could recognize another piece by the same writer without difficulty.
Know the content: this is what you have to say. It should be a topic that is important to you and should be small enough to handle in the paper. it should express the ideas clearly so every reader can understand and it should provide the reader with interesting insights. A solid, well defined theme holds the paper together, giving a focused, and detailed exploration of the topic.

Okay, since everyone here is in Height of the Guild, I thought I would do something involving that thread. Alright, this will be sort of a discussion that should lead to some good ideas, and we could probably learn something about our writing.
What do you think about the characters in HotG?
What sort of impressions do you get from them?
Now more importantly, how have the writers conveyed these qualities in their characters?
After we answer those questions each of us will know what things are not being conveyed well and we can discuss ways to improve our character development even more.
I have to go eat so I can't do this now.

What do you think about the characters in HotG?
Well i think that the characters are great. Ranging nicely, in a wide spectrum of unusual personalities, including writers voice, point of view, physical appearance, background etc.
What sort of impressions do you get from them?
Usually, in a writing piece like this, the characters tend to stick to their characteristic guidelines. Which is not a bad thing, but that is what has happened here. I get the impression that most of the writers know what theyre talking about all of the time.
Now more importantly, how have the writers conveyed these qualities in their characters?
Ok. well some (*coughshadowcasterandgorman*) have conveyed them better than others (*coughmecough*). I definately need to work on shaping my characters. RSF is working on it as he told me over msn. But overall, i think as a whole this thread has well defined characters.

Okay I had this idea I thought might be cool. We have a character interview and one person chooses one of their characters to be interviewed. So then we asks your character questions, and you have him or her respond. (in character)
Or maybe we put the character into certain situations and you write what may or may not happen. If you happen to like something quite a bit, maybe you could start adding that into your portrayals of him or her into your writing.
Of course we would be allowed to give suggestions and feedback to whomever volunteered.

That's because they are meant to do the same things. To develop your character, it's just that this is more of a feedback suggestion type setting where everything is pure writing in character rather than answering background information.
Edit - Alright no one seems to be jumping on this so I'll jump on this.
I'll be using my character Edwin from my solo thread. Put him in whatever situation you like and him any question.

Edwin chuckles a bit at the question even though it seems like a legitimate enough question.
"I honestly can't answer that question," said Edwin smiling earnestly. "My goal is that I am never able to answer that question, so my goal is achieved for now." The rogue smiles again giving you a wink.
"You know what I'm talking about. Right?" Edwin laughs again this time giving a friendly slap on your shoulder.

I think we need to get this started. So taking after GoP, I think we should have some sort of competition. Anyone have some good ideas?
I was thinking about having them be like some sort of writing prompt. Maybe something like this...
You have ventured into a new land and you encounter a humanoid of a completely new race. Describe how they look and your interactions with them. Assume you can both speak in common tongue. Show their mannerisms. Make this race come to life in your interaction.

Nice plan, but we should first gather who all is in this guild before we jump into the competitions. For the record, I'm in. Once we have a nice, sizable memberlist, then the fun can begin.
