From this homepage some worked, but some didn't work when I tried it. Then I went to heroworld.net and navigated to the downloads. (heroes3site/index.html then downloads)
Althogh the homepage uses some kind of asian language, when the cursor is placed on a link, the browser shows the address at the bottom. In the downloads the chronicles bonus missions can be found in the bottom section and are downloadable without any problem.

Those aren't the actual Chronicles. They're custom campaigns made to imitate the content of the Chronicles. That is, they're maps like the ones you can download off MapHaven or ToH or whereever. Therefore, they're neither hacks nor abandonware.
(Chronicles probably isn't an abandoned series, anyway...chances are, it was included in UbiSoft's purchase.)

I think they're actually ripped campaigns from the hc data files...not that I am complaining...

Am I sure they're imitations rather than the actual Chronicles? Yes, I am.
Am I sure they're legal/illegal? No. However, I suspect they're illegal. Being very good imitations -- replicating virtually everything in the Chronicles save custom movies, voice-overs, and avatars -- they discourage people from buying the actual product.
Lest my understanding of copyright law get questioned again, look here. In this case, Myth 2 seems to be applicable.

Don't know if this is the same thing you are talking about.
I thought there were two downloadable Chronicles made by 3DO. They were free, but would not install unless you already had at least two of the purchased Chronicles on your comp.

This is true, if you have 2 chronicles titles then world tree will install, if you have 3 then fiery moon will install.
There's another thread in Library somewhere that talks about this, I think you can get the links there, so no - they're not illegal.

This thread has a link to Skwerly's web page which has a link to Fileplanet. Something's wrong with my Fileplanet ID so I can't give you a link straight to the download.

Allow me to re-edit: I don't think they're ripped b'cuz I tried and the campaigns couldn't open with the SoD or WoG campaign maker...

There is no Chronicles editor.
I own a bunch of Chronicles and Heroes III Complete. They are separate software. The file I downloaded as a test (Frost, from links above) opened in Heroes III to play and also opened in the Heroes III campaign editor. In play, Tarnum's portrait looks suspiciously like Mutare, there was no special intro movie (since it opened in my normal Complete), and no voiceover. I'm telling you, those are homemade campaign files.
That said, I was lucky to get the "official" Chronicles when I did. They're very hard to find now. So, if you want the story and/or play experience of the Chronicles, those files do the trick nicely -- they have the same scrolling words, popup messages, and maps as the official versions. Plus, they're free and take up less room on your harddrive.
