Question about prison

Now that you have the choice of killing the hero or capturing him/her, is it still possible to take their artifacts after the battle?

My guess:
You have to kill/capture the Hero first as in Heroes 3.

Meaning:
You won't get any artifacts if your enemy flees or surrenders.

What happens to artifacts carried by already dead stacks (heroes or creatures) at the point of fleeing / surrendering is unknown.

So if you imprison them, you take their artifacts? Sounds good.

Ditto

However, I find myself questioning the usefulness of the prison sometimes. What good is it, really, to just have a bunch of enemy Heroes sitting in your town, when you can't use them or interrogate them? Perhaps some might say, "So that your enemy can't have them," but if you can't make any furthur use of them yourself...

Prisons add a great dimention to the game.  As discussed before it might take alot of time and xp to create a truely worthwhile hero.  In h3 if you lost your superhero the game was all but over, now that hero remains playable.  If you don't have a prison all the opponant has to do is hightail it back to the battle site and get his hero back, (Imagine a ninja sneaking in and stealing the dead hero to revive him) but with a prison, the opponant has to now find and attack your town to get the hero back.  And I believe he will want the hero back.  So now you have to worry about guarding the prisoner or expanding your empire.  Will you keep enough forces back?  What if the opponant decides to attack your main because you split off forces to guard his main?  I think it will be fun.

Yes

I believe in this aspect of the Prison, however, I guess I just wish that there was something more I could get out of the imprisoned Hero, rather than just playing keep-away from the real owner.

But will the player know which town to assault in order to rescue their hero or do they just have to take any town?

What I want to know is how many heroes can be kept in one prison? Is it unlimited or not?

Sure, but do note that the Prison comes with the Castle. With the slowed down economy, you'll likely not have more than one town with a Castle (it's very expensive to build and you cannot afford the production of more than one castle (unless you get a lot of extra money on a regular basis.)

Anyway, a town with a Castle would be something you'd protect. You would not have many of them so you can't leave it unprotected.

This means that the quest of taking the town in question becomes much more difficult, if not close to impossible.

Until you get Grand Master stealth, you will appear on the map if the opponent has 4th level creatures. And if the opponent has a hero with GM scouting he can follow your every move on the adventure Map.

But on the other side, if you have GM scouting you can know exactly what kind of town you conquer, and you'll see whether there is a prison or not. That way you'll be sure which town to attack in order to get your hero back.

BTW, even with GM scouting vs GM stealth, don't forget about the fog of war, it can trouble you even with scouting.

What's this about? Could you explain that bit? Why does your opponent need 4th level creatures in order to see you on the map?

If you have master stealth, then you are invisble to 3rd level creatures (and below), and heroes with Expert scouting and below.

If opponent has 4th level creatures or heroes with master, scouting then they can see heroes with master in Stealth.

(How this will work for flagged mines and towns is unknown.)

It won't negate it fully, but a hero with GM scouting will be able to see a hero with GM stealth.

Hmmm...

You know what could make the prison even better?  If you could take half or more of the captured heroes troops.  That would make it pretty useful.  Now as far as which town the hero is being held, if you the player was captured by an opposing hero and taken to a prison would you know which town that hero was being held at?  If so I wonder if the AI could do the same thing?

p.s.  Djive, I was looking at your signiture and I like it.  It's a pretty cool quote.

I think prison is free, part of the basic of a town.

Castle: upgrades walls and adds the central tower.

Castle is pretty lame for the cost.

Hmm.. What happens if you lose your hero but still win the battle with the rest of the troops? Will your hero still be imprisoned? Will you imprison your enemy's hero? Since the opposition was defeated, one could assume no one is there to imprison your hero?

If your hero is killed and your forces win you can take the hero back to town and revive him.
