It does look better and for future installments I think they should consider making two dimensional 3D town screens.

One of the lithographs from the collectors editions caught my eye because it looks like some kind of forest but after enlarging the image it looks like Sylvan Townscreen:

That is GREAT! Something like that would 100 % satisfy my wishes for a Haven townscreen. Explain to me again, is this a screenshot from the in-game fly-by in the trailer, or is this taken from somewhere else?

Well yes, it is a still from pre-order trailer at 1:12 - 1:13, the fly-by shown here would look kinda cool if that was the townscreen...

It looks 10 times better than the actual townscreen, and I bet if one had access to the 3D graphic and could experiment a bit with the angle one could get something that looks even better than that. And when this is the actual 3D graphic in the game, even if they want a 2D townscreen, wouldn't it be extremely simply to extract bit-by-bit graphics of each element to make it work even as a buildable town?

Well, from the point of view of a CG student I'd say: It is pure laziness!!!
I always said they are on the halfway to 3D town screens, they have some core buildings (so to create the unique ones, e.g. dwellings, they should just copy and modify them that is not that time and money consuming), the textures seems to be pretty nice, realistic and in good resolution, they have really nice skies (I'm not sure why they put so much effort in this, if it won't be seen in game that much (because of the camera angle you use while playing)), if they were able to make static townscreen buildable and buildings to be pickable... well add just one dimension and that's it....

Well there can be other reasons not to make full 3D townscreens: It consumed computer power and takes long time to enter town. I'm not sure I agree with this, but they are valid reasons to opt for 2D. But when you have something that looks as good as this - and there are even at least four buildings that could easily go as dwellings in the screen just as it is - it just seems plain stupid to go for a townscreen as dull and unimpressive as the one we actually get.

Why not pre-rendered buildings on a 2d screen like in h3? This way buildings will have a much higher quality since they aren't rendered in real time and they can use a powerful rendering plug-in (indigo for example) for buildings that look as real as you can get.

Ehm, if I remember right, in the very first gameplay demo, there was a loadscreen (which took few seconds of loading) when entering the picture townscreen, so I think could be able to wait more seconds while the 3D was loaded :-D

its ridiculous how much worse the actual town screen is than them just putting some 3D buildings together lol

Well, I think that Heroes is in such state, that making compromises between 2D a 3D like this is like adding oil to fire.
But the idea itself would not be bad. A realistic still townscreen would look quite impressive. But as I said, in this state it would not satisfy anyone and even make the things worse.
And by the way, thanks for showing me Indigo, as I see it is Blender friendly, so I think I know what I will do during sleepless nights

This +10000
The fact that a 2 second, in-game fly-by shot puts the actual Haven TS to shame speaks volumes.

Having the town screen pan out like that and then becoming a static, two dimensional but animated and realistic screen would be great.
