Nice. I started reading it a few days ago, too. Really interesting book, but the number of characters is somewhat daunting. I'm writing down their names and basic info (job, relatives) on a piece of paper and it's starting to look like the Silmarillion appendix.

Great book, You might not care about this stuff but I just read two of his short works, "Father Sergius" (about a Prince leaving the glam behind and taking the hard road)and an a mostly unknown work "My Religion" If that dude was still alive I would contact him because I believe and have learned the truth just as he did...although he communicated things better than I ever will. Bottom=line, the message of Christ was corrupted in several areas and he explains the how and why quite well.

Polish translation. I don't speak Russian at all, so reading the original would be a difficult task.

Lev Tolstoi was a great man for me as a Christian, not just a great writer.

picked my copy of the "i ching" back up, and instead of just scanning through it like i did years ago, i'm actually reading it. i was recommended it by a rather weird roommate i had in the army. he was weird in a good way, though. i'm sad that i never got a chance to trip with him.

Now reading various Sherlock Holmes stories as well as novels. The shows were good, but nothing beats the books in this case for me.

There, I'm in the same wagon as you(although I speak very poor russian). I skipped a lot of my Russian classes, mainly because my teacher was a piece of crap and I couldn't stand it.
I have the "War and Peace" from the Oxford Classics series. been reading it a bit as well. Out of the Russian authors I like their fantasy/sci-fi ones(Lukjanenko, Perumov, Glukhovski and Vasilievich)
The Blades by Vladimir Vasilievich is probably my most read piece of Russian literature.

The Strugatsky brothers? For me these two are easily the best sci-fi writers of their time, maybe even of all times. Probably because their works always use the fantastic environment to present some very earthy, human problems in an original way. Not to mention that when they want to be humorous, they can easily compete with masters like Pratchett.

@Zenofex: never read them and so, I don't have an opinion on their work. There aren't any copies left to purchase, tried looking everywhere, from bookstores to antique days in markets. Libraries don't have it either.

I've read "Stalker", actually "The Wish Machine" the original title, by the Strugatsky brothers and I also saw the film which was actually based on an earlier novel by them.
There are also games but very loosely based, and I wouldn't like a video game based entirely on a book anyway.

In digital format I presume? not a fan of that. And I don't trust online shopping in general.

No, they sell physical copies. (Bookdepo and Abe don't have ebooks at all, iirc)
I don't see why you wouldn't trust online shopping. I've bought several books from Bookdepo and everything was ok, the books arrive in good state on time.

I have my reasons for that. beides, I live in a former soviet republic. we have this thing called "corruption" and packages tend to "disappear".
I'm pretty sure that a fellow from former Yugoslavia has met these things.

Actually... I haven't. Every book I order arrives. My mother buys a lot of stuff from eBay, too, and I can remember only one incident where the item didn't arrive (and she got a refund).
But if you have your reasons, that's ok, I guess.
