Watched the closing episode of Sons of Anarchy season 3 yesterday which finishes with this little tune.
I can't help thinking that this version is not only better, but also much more fitting, all things considering.
But of course that's only me.

I like the acoustic Neil Young version best. I was putting this song in a mixed tape I made for a girl in high-school, the night Kurt Cobain used the lyrics in his suicide note, true story, one of those weird coincidences.

We could argue about the acoustic and electric Neil Young a lot in general, but what I like with the electric version of My My is the sheer defiance it oozes and which fits the song better, imo, than the simple acoustic version which misses the power that comes from it, at least for me and in comparison.

The "rocking" version is more fitting to "better to burn out" content, that's true. But I simply prefer the acoustic version because the melody sounds better as a calm ballad. The lyrics are not melancholic but the song sounds better when it's melancholic.

Umm - no. Just no.
Look, we don't need to discuss this, because it's totally subjective, since it depends on which elements you "prioritize", so-to-speak. For example, I wouldn't call it a "rocking" version, I'd call it an electric or FEEDBACK version.
You might say, it's two different songs; for me the acoustic version is a simple song, while the electric version is an emotional powerhouse. Knowing a bit about Neil Young and the fact that he got quite angry the older he got, I find more, well, more Neil Young in the electric version - and of course I'm a sucker for electric guitars which plays a role as well.
