Poll Question: Spiders where?
So, I'm pretty sure that no one would argue against the fact that we're all pretty damn tired of the heavy spider theme in the Necropolis faction, or Spiderpolis as some people call it. It wasn't that good of an idea to begin with, and was done terribly. HOWEVER, this have led me to wonder what to with spiders in the heroes series.
Personally, I do believe we should have a spider unit. Giant spiders are a classic in fantasy, and it would make for a nice unit is done properly. The question is simply which faction? And that's why I made this little poll, listing a number of faction I believe could house a spider unit, given it doesn't be come the center of said faction.

I don't mind spidery units but let's run out of more interesting ideas first.

It really depends on if we're talking about thematics, plausibility, or both. I'm assuming the spiders are about roughly the size of a large dog.
Necropolis - Spiders would be good at immobilizing and killing their foes without damaging the body too much, allowing near-perfect bodies to be reanimated to fill out their ranks. This would be an interesting step in making Necromancy more interactive, and less passive.
Stronghold - Meh, they don't really make sense to me here in any of the many iterations of the Stronghold.
Dungeon - Could work, assuming they're good at capturing other denizens of the Under-Earth. They'd be good for setting up traps and ambushes, which is supposed to be along the lines of the current Dungeon's theme.
Swamp Fortress - Makes the most sense to me here. Serpent Flies would have a natural predator, and the Beast-Masters of the Fortress seem more than capable of wrangling more fearsome creatures. The only problem is that Spiders aren't particularly fond of swimming, so the swamp-lands aren't exactly their native terrain.
Nature - I'm indifferent to this one. As you stated, Spider's aren't evil, so they make sense here, just a little boring.
I wouldn't mind a few spiders in different factions all within a new HoMM title. I actually like spiders as a creature quite a bit, it's just that we've been slapped with Spidercropolis (despite only one or two mobs actually resembling a spider to begin with) so much that I think people are a little sick of it (not that you don't know that).
If the 1-4 spiders in the game's lineup have alternatives for those that wish to avoid triggering their PTSD, and there are plenty of other kinds of creatures to make differences in kind, I think they could be an interesting addition.

the Spider surely belongs in the Dungeon because fighting the Spiders in the first Dungeon is one of the great cliches of all fantasy RPG games (except for Wizardry 4: The Return of Werdna which is a little bit more Original about it) lol

In terms of lore, it might be difficult to justify putting spiders anywhere besides Necropolis, but thematically they'd work best in Dungeon.

In my project, I'm using them in Dungeon.
But as Varnoc pointed out, I see spiders fitting almost anywhere if given proper tweaks into adaptation. And, also as Elvin pointed out, prioritize other things before giving spiders room. In my project, they got reasonably ok as a weak tier unit for Dungeon and there was room to place Widowmakers (from which I reminded them from MM7) back into game.
Stronghold you can base yourself into those desert spiders, which move windmill-like on the sand.
Swamp forest makes me think of giant ones, similar to those we see in the second Hobbit movie.
Nature I see them as tiny, swarming, green, could even make them a cross-work with butterflies.
Aquatic, similar to a jelly-fish at motion, big leg-span with fins between them. Just a thought.

Dungeon for me. Oh my own proposal uses rthem elsewhere, but of the traditional factions, Dungeon fits the best IMO.

You can put them mostly anywhere I believe. Necropolis could go for a bone spider, Dungeon could have a giant cave spider, Stronghold a desert spider or a Goliath bird-eater, and so on. But I do believe that generic creatures should come second to mythological ones. Creature Quest for example has a good mix of both.

Now I'm imagining tumbleweed spiders, both amusing and terrifying.

Voted Nature as a totally re-newed faction straight out of Heroes 4.
Yes. You read this right. I actually voted the Spider being a natural creature that is both nocturnal and beneficial to humans.
A reclusive human faction that prefers its forest bound little critters that are also, praying on anything that does not belong in a specific human's home.
So, obviously, the human warriors are as elites for the newest faction of the series. All three types: Swordsman/Squire(walker), Pegasi lancer/archer(flyer/shooter) and, Knight/Champion(Heavy running grounds tank that when upgraded, uses a heavy sword and shield in melee combat).
Three cores that would see the large tarantula spider as level 3 tank unit.
Champion unit should be of ancient caveman descent and, its upgrade should be a very large Club-using Neanderthal(Predecessor to the Homo Sapien type of a Human Bi-ped). Hulky being that uses rage to grow in size and power as it levels up in rage.

Not sure what his intention was, but the way I see it is a bunch of bones from incomplete Skeletons all cobbled together to form the general shape of a spider.
It would be neat IMO, since these "Bone Spiders" would all look unique depending on their component bodies, and gives the Necropolis faction a use for the bodies of more than just humanoids in their armies.
Depending on how they're explained, you could do any number of neat things with em.

Wrong, there are spiders capable if being underwater in ponds and they even have oxygen bublles for that.
Underwater Spider 2 min video
I think nobody was against spiders in principle (as in, in some form of creature or map thingy), just that making spiders the whole theme of a town was dumb. Spider legs, spider godess, spider alternate form for ultimate creature, little spiders in scepters, spider magic, spider symbol... just... stop...

Capable I guess, just not optimal then? Unless it's some sort of fishing spider, which could be cool.
At the very least it lets them move around, so that nixes the only real problem I could see with Swamp Fortress spiders then from a realistic standpoint.
