New Disciples Game 'Liberation'

Wow! We've got another Disciples game on the way!!! I'm stunned as I thought this series was dead for sure!

I’ve always had a special love for the Disciples games as while their gameplay was similar to Heroes of Might & Magic they always had this gorgeous dark Gothic art style. The music was beautiful, the HoMM like maps fun to explore, and your units had to be really taken care of instead of being used as cannon fodder. Like most fans Disciples 2 is my favourite in the series!

Anyway the new game looks interesting... the trailer is very fancy looking and the pictures look like decent 3D, but I can't see any interface or if there's the cool Gothic artwork fans have come to love and expect. I’m also wondering if they’re dialing back the HoMM TBS strategy game (eg capture castles & resources) side of it and pushing more of a King’s Bounty RPG feel.

While still quite far from Heroes, Disciples series is indeed dear to my heart.

I liked the first 2 installments (and i replay Disciples 1 from time to time due to its simplicity and fast maps).

Now this one - From the screenshots I cannot tell I'm excited.
It seems they decided to keep the complicated "heroes style" combat, which was weak point in 3rd installment. It makes gameplay feel like a crawl compared to 1-2.

While we have newer games like darker dungeons which prove combat doesn't need to be oversaturated even in todays games, disciples series seem to want to reinvent the wheel even though their base combat was good enough to begin with.

Yeah it was announced some time ago, maybe we will get some more news on E3.

Though I honestly am not sure if this is still the game I loved. Aside from the art style Disciples 3 strayed far from what made me love the first two games in the first place (mainly the battle system). This seems to be continuning with the same concept...

But yeah, here's hoping the game will be at least decent.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

No, seriously, I am SO ****ING HYPED!

Got to explore all the content they put up on Steam. Trailer was good. I didn't expect them to go that far with the animation and models, but I guess it's not that "dead" as I though it was. It's still no contest for bigger titles, but it's more than sufficient. From the pictures I gather that hexes are returning. I am unsure about that decision. Normally I'd be happy for series like Heroes or Age of Wonders, but this is not the Disciples way. This game used to have its own strategic formula, namely the one seen in Disciples 1 and 2, and the fact that they departed from that is a big minus. The hex grid in 3 was not that great, but it did bring some nice concepts to the board like AoE spells and the terrain buffs / blockers. I'm ultimately not in favor of seeing it again, but that won't deter me to give it another try if they have new ideas in mind. Creature design seems good, could use more polish to make them look more terrifying, which I'm sure they'll give them since this is all pre-alpha.

Now the juicy bits: they're going for a choice campaign? That's pretty neat actually. 5 different endings? Count me in. Also, online 1v1 PvP skirmish sounds great, could be big if there's more to it.

Overall, completely unexpected. Pretty hyped and worried and hopeful and all that good stuff. I can't wait to see what follows next. Goes on my wishlist for now.

Between this, King Bounty II and Songs of Conquest, the year is shaping up to be quite good for us TBS fans.

EDIT: E3 gameplay trailer.

So what, this is no longer a strategy game, but something more akin to Kings Bounty?

Yup the first gameplay trailer is finally here! Gotta say this actually looks like a fun game I'd play and enjoy but the problem is it's not really Disciples. It feels more like King's Bounty mixed with Diablo & HoMM. They're games I love of course (hence why I'm here lol) but dropping the gothic artwork for a more HoMM/KB cartoonish look for all heroes and units is a huge loss to THIS series. They say dark fantasy but its just KB & HoMM with a bit more darkness. Disciples visual style was all about the gothic side of dark fantasy. I wonder if it's a consequence of Canadians doing it instead of a eastern European country cause those guys know Gothic.

My thoughts exactly - will probably give it a go, but otherwise it is a big departure from 1-2, unfortunately something D3 seems to have irreversibly set the tone for...

Looking through the comments, people are either "looks nice I'll give it a go" or "this is not Disciples!". Problem is, you don't need to look far to find similar games to this (mostly when it comes to a mix of RPG and TBS battles), while Disciples 1-2 was very unique with it's battle system, "upgrade system", or "land terafforming" mechanic.

I think the main issue is that traditional TBS strategy games like Heroes 3 or Disciples 1-2 are very niche nowadays and developers don't want to bet on it, those were ousted by different genres or genre mixes which sell better.

At this point the closest games we will get to Heroes 3 is probably Songs of Conquest, while Disciples 1-2 have no spiritual succesor yet...

Yeah, but as mentioned before, many people don't think the direction the series took since Renaissance/Reincarnation is right...

Old Dis is still waiting for new development.

Oooooh yes that's a much bigger video with more gameplay reveal and dev commentary which is good.

It actually looks like a decent game and is very King's Bounty and HoMM like.. but it's just not Disciples and it's getting burned so bad in the comments on youtube and everywhere else because of that lol.

I feel like Disciples fans are kinda in the same boat as Heroes fans. For years now the IP was handled like a hot potato and passed from hand to hand and when someone starts to eventually work on it, the game doesn't look like something that was expected. It's interesting that so many people remember it fondly, I always thought it was a rather niche franchise...

I remember how sad people were Mountain Clans didn't appear in Disciples 3 (even though the expansion was in the works), and it seems the case will be the same here...

And yeah, the timing for a "clone" might also be bad if we're already getting Kings Bounty II this year.

Honestly, if you removed the title I would've thought it was a low-budget strategy indie game.

Imo, if there was something that defined disciples was the art-style, gritty, gory and visceral. And they didn't even add a darkening filter, a vignette or something.
It's not like it's impossible to make terrifying 3D models, they did it in D2, they can do it now, but instead, that werebeast thing looks cuddly to me, otherwise pre-rendered 2D would work wonders.
I love how demons and undead were done in the original, actual scary stuff that gave me nightmares as a kid, I swear, I thought playing as the demons would make them steal my soul (I was an impressionable kid, ok?).

And also the battle system, the original may have been simple, but it worked, and it was that kind of RPG cool battle system, with over the top demonic spells and all.

Remastering Disciples 2 would have been better at this point.

Overall... It's probably best if this is considered a spin-off. That would help lower the expectations from the old fanbase. This does not have the soul of Disciples as seen in 1, 2, heck even 3 was better. It looks like a more RPG-ish take. Story and narrative are very RPG driven. That said, I really like the dialogues and the animated portraits, I think that's a great design choice. Do I prefer that as a tradeoff for the soul of the game? Not at all.

As a standalone game without the Disciples tag, it would be okay. It doesn't "feel" like Disciples. I'm quite disappointed to be honest. Like Neraus said, where's the dark, gritty, suspenseful atmosphere that the game used to have? What about the gothic elements? Just not there.

Btw Disciples 2 aged quite good

Yeah I agree, something was lost even if the Disciples 4 seems to be trying with such aesthetics in its own way.

Development of Disciples I see rather like Duel of Chamions. Battle system is the same type.  But DoC is much better.  But lost adventure map. It shoulud be mixed to have perfect game.

You mean a TBS+Card game mix? NO. We have plenty of those. Disciples 1&2 were perfectly fine. The main problem here is that they DON'T do game like Disciples 1&2 anymore. Besides Disciples had a bit of a "action cards" like system: you could use two potions & similar items in battles.

I agree with Baronus here with regards to combat as I have been thinking the same ever since Disciples 3. Both 1 and 2 had very cards-like tactical combat and an appeal through simplicity. Although much different from actual card games, the format is similar. 2 rows with 3 units each, combat is stationary, you even had the portraits on the side and you could click on them. They should've kept that and improve on it instead of turning combat into a generic strategy TBS grid.
