I would suggest an idea which has been active in last "The sons of Oracle tournament". They made something automatic in reports who penalized the points received playing same map more than 2 times same month.Third time you report same maps points come half, and every report aditional on same map after this half your points again and again. I dunno how they worked it but it was great. The one who knows all tricks how to do it is Teglatphalassar.

I don't think mape rating system would work if some aditional politic about making maps popular doesn't come also. What about "the map of the week"? each week, a map is choosed randomly from list and playing it will give you twice your points. Just as Vesuvius did in first season with his XL map, the Arena. After most of maps has been played well, then we have to vote.If not, every new player coming to Zone will be influenced by choice of maps by looking at rooms descriptions.

map of the week
Problem came, though that players would try to 'agree' that they report the game as the map of the week, but really have played another map, hence abuse the benefit of playing a double point map, when they really did not.
In the oracle things were simple in that way, with just a few winloss reports such a method is possible as you suggest sal, but with the volume, that sort of thing would need to be automated.
Jinxer: To remove a map after it has been on a site several months wouldnt be so great, if a map is good, it should stay there. Perhaps we could list the maps as they come in, newest on top like the photo page. This way the old ones are at bottom, and the alphabetical order thing wont get people naming them so they are always on top.

Map of the week
I could get excited about an "assigned" map of the week actually. It sounds like a good idea. Even if you were only required to play it once in a week it would still get people off of their "favorite" map for a change.
Ahhh.. I remember the good old days..... 42 wins in a row on Spellcasters until Kenny taught me a Sorceress lesson 8)
Anyway, Ive grown a little and dont mind losing a few now as long as I can continue to learn.

I am sorry but I do not see where I have offended u Red. I just GENTLY INFORMED u that u can get relics on Boomerang. About your 5% chance you maybe right but let me tell u something.
The next time I played this map - and belive me it is true - my opponent got from ship wreck s., Heavenly Helmet of E. I know that it is a small chance but it happened to me twice in a row.
Anyway, peace man and enjoy the game.

Map "Scoring"
I like the idea of modifying the points for winning on a map played over and over again. The only true way to validate it against fake reporting, though, would be to have the winner submit the saved game as proof. This would get to be too much, I would guess, to have to verify every time. Perhaps if someone could come up with some sort of scoring/point system to show a player's variety of map playing, i.e. start with 100 pts - every time play same map (other than random) back-to-back, lose points - every time play different map (or random), gain points - every time play same map in certain time period, lose points, etc., etc. Call it Map Points. The higher your score goes, the more map variety you play. The lower, the less variety you play. Someone with 0 points would be a player who only plays the same map(s) over and over. People could just choose not to play them. <<How will they improve their rank if not playing?>> The higher a player's score above 100, the more variety of maps they like to play (perhaps cap the score at 200?).
In any case, Ves, if we come up with some type of informational only system, I would be more than glad to automate it and maintain the page(s) for HOMM4.
Keep the ideas a flowin'!!!!

doesnt matter really
Who cares if someone plays the same map 100 times and reports 100 times? as I noticed...all games played will be on someones profile right? so there, people know you played the map 100 times, so its no suprise a.) if they offer to play it and u arent sure how many times they played it.. and b.) you know if the person has true skill at the game or is just super at 1 map.

exactly
the player info/search button will link to the players statistics as to what maps they played and how many times, and who they played as well.
But darxion: I will need you to apply 'sub-automation' that is automation for specific pages on the new TOH, beyond the main automation set.
Two things I have concluded will need some simple automation right away:
TOH Links Page -- Where other sites will have links, and players can submit ratings to each site.
TOH Maps Page -- Where players can submit a rating of 1-10 on each map, and it gets averaged out.

sounds good to me JB

I agree JB, I think people should be allowed to be players of whatever they like best. People don't have to play them if they don't want or don't like their map choice unless it is a subtournament game of some type.
I don't like seeing people's freedoms restricted on what they might enjoy whenever that is possible. I think the system allows people to do as they like the way it is and everyone will be able to see a players record and make up whatever they like by way of opinion about that person and their playing too.

Player Profiles
I think it's a very good option to see in player's profile how many times he played a certain map.
Maybe I'm gonna check profiles regularly then, search for a player who played map X very often, practice that map like hell and kick his butt there ... or get my own butt kicked
So watch out, people!
Would be cool if viewing a player's profile wouldn't take so long (download time), since I only have a lousy 56K modem and I won't get DSL soon. So pleeeeease, no big graphics or animation there. Maybe provide a "light version" with the bare stats (like it is now)

Actually it is a great way to learn a map. And you don't even need a profile to do it. People know what maps certaqin players play.
You want to learn BM, play Vazelin. I have heard lastplace was good on BfH. Frank is a good bet on any map. Troelsen knows BoB like a back of his hand. I like BfP and 7 lakes.
I even tried to learn maps this way before, play one of the masters there make a save every turn and study them. Unfortunately all i got for it was a bunch of losses and nothing else since i was too lazy to study the saves later. And then i decided i don't like those maps anyway so why should i learn them and then win on maps i dont like to play.
But i think ists still a good idea for newer players to to it if they like the map.

Hehee, or play Titan on DoG. Then ull be in for something, but Im guessing Twitch was a good bet on that map aswell.
Was lucky enough to play in division with Titan season 2, we played a campaign on DoG, I learned my tactic from Titan as he was the captain, eventhough I lost my first game in the campaign, I still managed to beat Zud on it. Even learned him a few trick, like dont take any mines or arties. Just get that darn DD, preferably in week 2

Guess this post is just that I wholly agree with Maxyms post, as always

automation finishing up
as the dudes are finishing up the last touches on the automation, basically ive asked them to have on the player lookup info beyond the win/loss/points honor rating and medals, to have a 'statistics' button. This will link to a listing of the players' record on what maps they have played, how many times, and who they have played. This will be useful reference for all, including myself, if I want to occasionally see who they have been playing.

Whats wrong with playing the same thing over and over again?
So.. kasparov should be scolded for playing the same starting position for...10000 times perhaps?

nothing is wrong with it...
but everybody who's interested should know about it.
If Anand has a championship match against Kasparov, he would check the databases, find out about openings frequently played and prepare himself. Now ToH players will be able to do the same... what is wrong with THAT?
