Guild of Pixelartists

Gather round, citizens of HC, for the grand opening of the Guild of Pixelartists! If you are interested in creating H2 creatures, drawing for the HC webcomic or any other form of pixel art, this guild is for you! You can become a member by showing a single piece of pixelart made by you.

As you join the guild, you will gain the rank of initiate and have the opportunity for advancement by gaining experience points.

1. initiate pixelartist 0-50
2. apprentice pixelartist 51-150
3. adept pixelartist 151-450
4. expert pixelartist 451-900
5. guildsmaster - a special rank that is gained by means of voting

Experience can be earned e.g. by posting pixelart. People can rate any posted pic. Depending on who rates a picture, the experience given for that vote varies.

expert/adept - 1.5x
Guildsmaster/apprentice/initiate - 1.2x
non-member - 1x

Another way of earning experience is winning competitions. Every now and then the Guildsmaster will post an announcement about the beginning of a new competition. The rules are as follows: the guildsmaster sets the restrictions - which can be anything from object drawn to size of pic - and experience prize. Then all members vote for the best entry (can't vote for your own).

H3 creatures would not work for this guild, since it is not truly pixel art.

I'd like to join the guild, here's my pic to show that I can do pixelart:

Ok Woock, I give it approval.  Maybe if you buy Asmodean some donuts he'll check the place out.
My pixelart pretty much sucks but I may post some stuff for the hell of it.

No prob from my position - but it looks quite a bit like H3 - and this is not really "pixelart" at its lets say definition
But I will await Woocks and IYYs opinion on that

Nice design, good shading. I'd suggest a stronger contrast between the different colours and maybe an outline, but that's only an opinion.

I'm now going to make a small contribution to the guild: a short tutorial on background making. As you know, I made several backgrounds for the HC webcomic and also worked on stuff like that for other projects. Pixelart backgrounds can be very nice if they are done right. The style that I tend to use is quite cartoonish, but with a certain amount of realism. Here goes:

I'm going to create a background for either the tournament of honour or something else. To do so, I am thinking of using something like the H2 Knight castle. I start with ground and grass - the best part to start from since it's at the foreground. It's a good idea to start at the front and then progress backwards. Note that I draw outlines in a colour that's darker than the original, but not in black. This is because I'm trying to make the background stand out less, making the viewer focus on the characters.

I added a bit of grass, and some clouds (the sky felt empty). I tried two different methods for drawing clouds: on the left I just drew them freehand, and on the right I used the circle tool to create a lot of little circles and then erased the parts I didn't need. Both methods are quick and simple. Note that even the clouds have outlines that are slightly darker.

As in the original knight town, I added some hills and farmland at the back. I used a duller colour, to make it clear that these hills are at the back. This brings me to my next point:

When selecting colours for a background, colours that are less vibrant are a good choice. Reducing the saturation (going down on that big chart) gives you that effect. Also, when making backgrounds it's a good idea to keep contrast between different parts low. This means that pretty much all the objects in a dark cave will be dark, and all objects on a bright field (like this one) will be bright. Adding a black mountain at the back might have ruined this image.

Speaking of adding mountains to the back, here they are. But they are not dark but bright, blending well with the sky. The mountains cover some of the clouds, which is what they would prob'ly do in real life.

What these mountains really need though, is snow. And so I added some of that. I drew the snow with the same colours as the clouds and also freehand, but this time I kept sharper corners because this is what snow on mountains does.

Ah, the final and optional touch to pixelart - shading. There is no correct way of doing this, as every pixelartist uses a different amount of shading and applies it in different ways. You could do what Daddy did with the above picture and create depth by using numerous layers of shadow (this works very well for sprites), keep the image shadow free, or add shadows and highlights at opposite sides of the object. I just went for the simple approach (which is sometimes also the best), and that is to add a smooth shadow on one side of each object. Note that unlike objects, shadows do not have outlines. The colour of the shadow is just a slightly darker version of the object itself.

Well, this is it for this tutorial. It still doesn't look like what it's supposed to, but it is a finished piece. I will finish it later (in a seperate tutorial or not, I haven't decided yet).

Hope this helped you in any way to improve your skills as pixelartists.

Note: elections for guildmaster will be starting soon, as well as a competition for our official emblem

Insiper by IYYs tutorial, I tortured my Paint a bit, Here's the result:

Well, I like it much, but I am not quite satisfied eith that empty space... And yet I failed in making a pyramid. (besides the obelisk wouldn't look that good anymore when next to a pyramid)

Calling All Pixelartists

Okay guys, here's the challenge!!

Tavern will soon be starting poster of the month.
And one of the prestigious prizes will be a banner proclaiming their posting skills.

We've decided that a good use of your guild would be to design this banner for POTM.

The winner will be handsomely rewarded for this prestigious commison.
**coughqpcoughqpcough**

I look forward to seeing the designs

And also - +QP applied to IYY for that tutorial. Maybe you can do one for banner making?
