i think one should evaluate the creatures to the degree of their usefulness, not in one on one combat. that is to say, how important they are for winning the combat.

ancient behemoths stand no chance against the might of the archangel. try and you'll see that if the archangels wait in the beginning of the battle, they alwasy beat the ancients...

1v1 isn't what makes creature the best.. .even tho archangels surely are one of the best...
Keep in mind that you can get behemoths much earlier (day 2 in some cases) and that 1 archangel costs almost the same as 2 ancient behemoths.
With that in mind, ancient behemoth stil stands as my favourite creature

If they wait. A bit of calculating shows both the AA and AB have 11 attack over the other's defence. AB has more health, AA does more damage on average (blessed Behemoth does AA in always). In normal states, both require 6 blows to kill the other. All a matter of who deals the first blow (that one loses).

Anyway, comparing Archangels with Ancient Behemoths might not be the best idea, as Archangels are good against pretty much any creature (in a lesser degree against higher leveled creatures) while Behemoths are more and more effective against higher leveled creatures.

Lvl1: Skeletons (because of their numbers)
Lvl2: Lizardmen (Reptiles pwn!!!q121!!one!!)
Lvl3: Grand Elf (duh)
Lvl4: Vampire Lords / Basilisks.
Lvl5: Mighty Gorgons / Minotaur Kings
Lvl6: Naga Queens / Dread Knights
Lvl7: Ancient Behemoths / Chaos Hydras / Ghost Dragons / Titans. Oh come on, they are pretty much all cool...

If u wait, the stronghold guy casts mass haste, and all your poor army is dead (except the halbadiers ) before you get your move again..

Adding to that Stronghold guys have more profit in increasing levels, as when behemoths and Archangels go up 6 stats in both attack and defence, when facing each other the Angel will profit of only 1 additional defence where the behemoth has his full 6 extra. The higher stats they have, the more the odds increase in the Behemoth's favour.

What I particularly like though is how Fortress of all towns seems to have the perfect line-up to beat down "superpower" castle. lvl6 wyven on lvl5 zealot, lvl 3 dragonflies on lvl 2 marksmen, easily solved. Gorgons take out Archangels, hydras and basilisks attack anywhere they can and do best results. Hydra on champs mostly, basilisk on griffins. Wyvens can move on to kill off crusaders once the zealots are dead (at the most 2 turns). Gorgons can move on to champs after Angels are down, and if they have problems with the angels, hydras can help.

Well, best is one thing and favourite is another.

Best would be something like this:

1. Centaur capt.
2. Storm elementals. If no flux then it's open between Marksmen and Harpy hags
3. Grand elves
4. Vamp lords
5. MG
6. Naga Queen
7  AA's

Favourote would be

1.Cent capt.
2. Wolf raiders
3. Grand elves
4. Arch mage
5. Minotaur Kings
6. Scorpicores(looks cool)
7. Ancient Behemoth

angelito, you haven't understood me. i am talking about one on one archangel vs ancient behemoth. you are right that if the archangels wait, the stronghold will cast mass haste. but we are talking about 1 archangel vs 1 ancient behemoth. if we had full armies, the castle would cast mass haste and hit the behemoths with the archangels, with the champions (all the way to the ancients brings them a considerable charge bonus) and the royal griffins. with the behemoths out, the stronghold has no chance but to try to resurrect them (all stronghold heroes are "great" magicians )
and about that you can get behemoths earlier than angels, that's right but that's what griffin conservatories are for.

With 3 vs 1 of course Ancients don't stand a chance.

Point remains that Behemoths, one on one, will do ANYONE in, even Arch Angels, especially when stats increase.
