Garrison hero

I just discovered (by mis-clicking) that you can put a hero inside a castle garrison instead of just visiting.  You do it by visiting the castle, then clicking the hero portrait and then the flag above it.

I've been playing for years and I never realised this was possible!  And yet it is stated clearly in the manual

After a little experimenting I found that:

* Once the hero is garrisoned they don't appear on the world map.
* You can also have a visiting hero in the castle at the same time as a garrisoned one.
* Both the garrisoned hero and the visting one will recover spell points from the Mage Guild.
* Garrisoned heroes cannot use the Blacksmith, Artifact Merchant, Inferno's Town Gate or Stronghold's Ballista Yard or Freelancer's Guild.
* Garrisoned heroes can use the Mage Guild, Necropolis' Skeleton Transformer, Conflux' Magic University, Dungeon's Battle Scholar Academy, Mana Vortex and Portal of Summoning, Stronghold's Hall of Valhalla,  Inferno's Order of Fire, Fortress' Cage of Warlords, Castle's Stables and Tower's Wall of Knowledge and Library.
* You can trade troops between a garrisoned hero and a visiting one, but not artifacts.
* Garrisoned heros don't count toward the 8 hero limit (i.e. you can have more than 8 heroes!) - however only 8 at a time can be 'adventuring heroes' (on the world map).
* Garrisoned heroes do not appear in the View Heroes screen - only in the View Towns screen.
* A garrisoned heroes do not appear in the taverns 'best hero' statistic, but garrisoned monsters do appear in the 'best monster' statistic.
* Usually, an attacker cannot tell that there is a garrisoned hero - only garrisoned troops.
* Rogues in your army will let you see that there is a garrisoned hero, but not who it is.
* Expert visions will let you see that there is a garrisoned hero, but not who it is.
* If attacking a castle with garrisoned and visiting hero, you fight the visiting one first on regular terrain - you have attack again to get into a siege.
* Legion artifacts still work on garrisoned heroes.
* Resource heroes still generate resources in garrisons.
* Scholars can't teach or learn from garrisoned heroes.

So my questions are:

What possibilities and strategies does this open up? Does anyone use this?

In a siege situation is there any statistical difference between having a visiting hero and a garrisoned one?

If your town is attacked with BOTH a garrisonned and a visiting hero in that town, the computerplayer will attack the visting hero firsty on a normal battle map.

If only one hero is present (whether visiting or not) He'll be attackied in a siege.

If the garrisonned hero has parts from the Legion artefacts, growth of cr will increase. If he has atillery he can controll the arrow towers...

That's all I think...

OMG haven't you ever played a map where you start with a garrisoned hero? Or havent you ever conquered AI/another player's towns?

He can - by clickin right mouse button on castle and seeing an icon with tower and gold helmet.

I also have a question: if you have garrisoned hero that has 7 troops and no place in army, and you havent any hero in a town, but you have creatures in a town, what will happen?

Some of the stacks will be dismissed and there will be a siege. I don't know whether the game dismisses the "weakest" stacks or the stacks in the garrison, but it would be easy to check.

Since no one has noticed it yet: You can swap the garrison hero and the visiting hero by pressing space.

Yes, it's the weakest that disappear

The garrison hero will get the bonus before the visiting hero, unless it's already doubled, then the visiting hero gets it.

Also the bonus isn't given until you actually enter the town. So if a visiting hero spends the night there, they don't get the bonus if they move before you enter the town. Same with TP, if you TP without entering you don't get the bonus.

Thanks! I never knew that! I just click garrison hero, and then click visiting hero. Pressing space saves me 1 movement. =)

Hmmm. I was only able to see this if I had rogues or expert Visions.  Without them I didn't get the 'garrisoned' icon when I right-clicked a castle.

Ok, just to check: in a siege situation does it make any (statistical) difference whether your hero was garrisoned or visiting?

The more taverns u have (--> towns), the more info u get from your enemies. With 1 tavern, u dont see the hero icon in opponent's town when u rightclick it, but with 3, u may be able to

hi

Hi, one question pls: if hero with full army (all 7 slots occupied) AND Ballista equipped staying in town with lvl 7 for speed and mana refill and the opponent attacks why is that in combat siege the army is messed up meaning archer units are not in the same position (let's say you have  zealots x x x 1AA x marksman). The zealots and marksman when battle begins are NOT in slots 1 and 7! Am i wrong with smth?

Regards,

Regards,
I can't tell you WHY it is made like this, but I can tell you how the comp makes the new order of your troops when getting attacked in town.

The army u had left on your hero will stay at the same spot, no matter if u have left a free space in garrison at the same slot or anywhere else. So if u have an Archangel in slot 3 on your hero, this Archangel will be on slot 3 during the siege aswell.

What about the rest of the army? It is completely irrelevant where the different stacks were located when u have put them into the garrison slots. When u get attacked, the comp arranges them from the weakest in slot 7 (near first aid tent) to the strongest in slot 1 (near ammo cart). But "weakest" doesn't automatically mean lowest level, but the strength of the whole stack. 20 pikeman will be arranged nearer to the top slot than 4 archers for example.
You can see how the computer values the different creature types of the same level with such a garrison attack. Just give your hero 6 different level 6 creatures (1 unit per stack), and then watch out how he arranges them when u get attacked. This way u know how the comp values the creatures..

And 1 more information: The warmachines are also completely irrelevant for the comp. They won't influence the order in any way.
