I killed 30 goons in just one fight and for the how they do have magic wards you know

As he said he killed 30 goons in one fight (with ONE SINGLE SPELL) and for how they do it? Well, I can just make some random warlock/wizard/cleric/druid/necromancer/you-get-the-point/etc. being in the bandit camp who knows how to do it.
OR
They have some kind of magical artifact (AKA the nether scroll. Yes, the same nether scroll that cause so much suffering and destruction just resently to the local city of Agilad)

What exactly is going on? I think that both groups are not quite there yet  .
How would a large group of people carrying heavy stuff and dragging ensnared people along with them catch up with the lightly travelling and agile duo who had quite the headstart on them so quickly?
