Lets just pretend that the guy isn't a dark elf or drow. He is just an elf with quite a sinister personality and agendas.

How about if he is an albino (gets to at least keep the white hair and extra-sinister looks without "splitting elves," sounds like a good compromise to me) or someone comes up with a sensible explanation on how would a group of elves have a dark gray skin pigment. (The same reason why some humans and other animals are albino?)

Okay, I admit it, I have been a bit too harsh on this thingy and I am sorry. Sure, go ahead and keep him as a drow if you wish to, I won't bother you about it anymore.
Originally I was being vague on purpose when I created Left-Earth so that the players could fill in the gaps and give the players more freedom when using their imagination on the writing. This is a freeform RPG after all.
I am sorry that I let my personal princibles of keeping elven races as one get on the way of the very desing princible that this very RPG was founded on.
P.S. I will be pretty darn pissed though if you start introducing high elves, wood elves, celestial elves, crystal elves, frost elves etc. into the RPG. "Regular" and drow are enough.

Simple solution.
Black skinned elves exist just as black skinned humans do.
Why should only men have the privilege of varying skin colour?

Dark skinned people actually have a function for their skin pigment. It makes the skin more resistant to the sun and it is useful because most dark skinned people originate from very sunny and hot areas.
What function would a dark grey skin pigment serve?

Nevermind that: what would it serve in caves?
One could argue it provides camouflage or it's a side effect of the magic of their race, I don't know...

Human skin colour is determined by the amount and the type of melanin in one's skin.
I guess that the dark magicks that drow are usually associated with somehow alter the melanin in their skin, the colour of their hair and their eyes. This explanation would lead me to belive that drow and elves are the same race and drow babies don't have dark grey skin, white hair and X colour eyes when they are born since they can't naturally produce that type of melanin.
I wonder if dark magic causes cancer too  .
If elves can get cancer and they don't die from the auto-immune symptoms; they grow into giant cancer-mutant abominations! That's freaking awesome!

I must overanalyze and get backing for my argument that one type of elf is enough!
I even made a great innovation to add to the fantasy genre when thinking this thing over to create a compromise in wich I can keep elves in one race and you can get something eqvalient to a drow!
Elven cancer-mutant abominations! Can you honestly tell me that is not awesome?

It's an elf with cancer that then grows to become some odd and deformed monster! It is nothing like the trope! If one was to make a cyber punk themed RPG with the elven abominations being turned into cyborgs it would be like the earlier linked trope.
