heroes 4 in windows 7
Hi, I recently installed HOMM3 on my 64 bit vista computer without any problems and therefore assumed I could do the same for HOMM4. however I suffered the same problems described in this topic:
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=23291
and found no soulution to the problem.Fortunatly, my parents are thinking of buying a new computer to, among other reasons, play HOMM4. This computer would, unless the problems would persist, run on Windows 7. So my question is, has anyone not been able to play HOMM4 with 64-bit Windows 7?

HOMM4 on win 7 runs but has disastrous performance because of an issue with the Windows Display Driver Model 1.1 (WDDM). On Core 2 duo with 4 gb ram and gf9600 my game ran at around 7 fps!. You can read more about it in the QA topic 2nd page, post from brett. Since I was already unable to run heroes chronicles (64bit issue) and had issues with heroes 5 (4gb ram issue), heroes 1 (sound) and heroes 2(sound), I have now decided to set up a dual boot system with xp 32 bit Sp3 and win 7 64 bit and are very happy with it because on xp 32bit Sp3 all heroes games work perfectly.

I'm sure this has been posted before but I had a quick look and didn't see anything so I'm gonna ask anyway.
I just installed IV on my PC, which is 64bit Windows 7, it works fine etc, but when I try to install the patch I get an error:
"Old file not found, however a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents don't match"
Advice?

I remember some problems that were like this from the day when people still played homm4.
Check that the patch u download is from the same origin as the game u have.. us / europe.
+ I suggest you download equilibris and patch the game through that.
Its way better and more balanced than homm4 normal, and its the only one that people play online anyways.

I live in the UK and I bought the game from a shop here, I assume the patch would've just been in English.
I'm not sure what this game you're referring to is, is it a free fan made continuation of HOMM IV?

its a fanmade mod that was very popular. Homm4 was horribly unbalanced even after patches.. you can install it on a clean homm4 so no patches needed. Just follow the instructions in the downloads page.
If you dont want to play equilibris but want to patch it you can search for updating problems from threads. I remember there being alot of then in 2002-2004 when a lot of people still played homm.
They explain how the game is updated.. Your sentence that you posted sounded very familiar.

I tried installing it earlier but it didn't seem to work, there were multiple files etc and I wasn't sure if I needed to download them all or not.
I'll have another look later I suppose, just getting late now.

Actually Heroes IV runs fine on Win7 64bit for me. I'm having Equilibris installed though, so following the advice and downloading it may be a smart move.

I said the game works fine, I just have normal HOMM IV, it's whenever I tried to add the patches they gave me error messages.

I think i got it to install now, but now the game crashes whenever I try to do something.

That's the download page, I believe I need to download:
updates_sfx.exe - This resource file is needed to install Equilibris on Standard unpatched Heroes without TGS or WoW
But the link is dead for it and I don't have a Fileplanet account so I can't use that link..

Campaign editor?
I'm also having issues. I was hoping someone here could help me out. I am running Heroes 4 original in Windows 7 and my campaign editor won't allow me to create new events. There's no "new" buttons for me to click and I can't edit things in other campaigns either. Any idea what is causing this? It does it even when I tell it to run in Win 95 mode under preferences.

Try upgrading to equilibris or GS or WW. I have no problems.

Equilibriul makes changes to the game that I dislike, and I think you have to purchase the other two. Right?
And do those even do anything to the campaign editor?

My understanding is that it also changes the power levels of many of the creatures. I like the game as-is with the creatures and their power levels. And if it won't for-sure fix the issue I'm having I really don't want it.

a bit late, but for those having performance issues with homm iv on vista or windows 7:
right-click on the launch icon for homm iv on your desktop.
then click "properties". then set it to run in compatibility mode for windows xp, service pack 2. set it to do this for all users.
voila!
animation issues fixed, because it won't use the renderer that causes the slowdown problems.
