I think some of what Aculias was trying to say was that "Gamespy" has a very limited # of buddies you can add to your list (10) if I am not mistaken, while the Zone allows you to add unlimited friends for free without having to subscribe.
Plus, the ads on the 2 of them are another factor. When loading GameSpy, you must wait for those silly ads to load and display before you can close them and enter the lobby. Zone on the other hand displays a small ad in the top and does not delay the lobby from loading.

I prefer homm4 to homm3, but the microsoft gaming zone is far more user friendly and efficient in my opinion. If I was to create my own dedicated server for homm gaming, I'd pattern it after the zone.

Subject: re: ToHeroes site
Rob,
The ToHeroes3 database contains 2842 players and the
ToHeroes4 database contains 9708 players. There are
currently 617 duplicate players between the two databases.
The first solution would be the fastest and easiest. We
would merge the non-duplicate players, from the ToHeroes3
database, into the ToHeroes4 database. This would give a
list of unique players from which to work with.
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
The upside of this solution would be minimal changes to the
existing database and web pages. The ToHeroes3 players
would be treated as if they were ToHeroes4 players.
The downside of this solution would be that the 617 duplicate
players would be dropped from the player list, unless we did
something to slightly modify and uniquely change their
usernames. If so, this modification probably would need to
be applied to all ToHeroes3 players, prior to merging. All
players would be treated as ToHeroes4 players, with no
distinction between ToHeroes3 and ToHeroes4 players.
The second solution would be to modify all the web pages,
processing routines and maintenance pages to use a
"ToHeroes3" flag, like you mentioned.
This would involve changes to the report win, report loss,
player search, player search results, and player rankings
pages. The administration pages would also need to be
changed.
Estimated Time: 4-8 hours
Changes would also need to be made to the database
tables for the new flag field. The following four tables would
need to be modified: GameResults, HCGameResults,
PlayerMedals and Players.
Estimated Time: 1 hour
We would also need to change the processing routines
for calculating wins and losses, as these would need to also
check the "flag" field and user names.
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
We would import the ToHeroes3 players into the ToHeroes4
database with the "ToHeroes3" flag set.
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
The upside of this solution would be to distinguish ToHeroes3
players from ToHeroes4 players.
The downside of this solution would be the number of changes
required.
Another issue to consider would be referencing player photos.
Currently all player photos are stored in one location. Merging
photos from the ToHeroes3 and ToHeroes4 could potentionally
overwrite existing photos and/or leave player records pointing
to incorrect photos.
If there is no "ToHeroes3" flag, first solution, all ToHeroes3
player photos would need to reside along side the ToHeroes4
player photos. This would require the ToHeroes3 player photo
files and corresponding database entries be changed to unique
values.
Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
If there is a "ToHeroes3" flag, second solution, the player
photos for both ToHeroes3 and ToHeroes4 players could remain,
but modifications to the web pages would need to be made in
order to view the photos from the correct corresponding location.
Estimated Time: 1-2 hours

Reply:
Hi Richard, the second solution is what I would need; some players would have both heroes3 and heroes4 accounts; and I need to keep the h3 and h4 players separate, even though they would appear on the same rankings table.
Once its all done, there will be a 'seasons closure' where I will be resetting points for both h3/h4 and a new season will start for both (sometime in mid-late february).
I'll be redesigning the mainpage of heroes, and there will be two winloss report buttons, one for reporting heroes4 winloss and one fore reporting heroes3 winloss, with the maps list being different for heroes 3 and heroes4 (best to import the maps list of heroes3). For new player registration, it might be simpler to have a menu right on the registration page for the registrant to choose if its a heroes3 or heroes 4 registration.
I've also attached two Icons, each representing players for h3 and h4.
They would appear on the distinctions (non-medals) section of the rankings page and on the player search record, so when someone looks them up, they will see that.
If we could keep the player photos in one directory, if there is a situation of overlap, that will not be a problem. As long as h3 and h4 records pull from the exact same photo directory, it will be less management and easier to update.
Email me if you have any other questions.
Thanks,
Rob

There will be a top 100 for heroes3 and heroes 4 players this season. The history page, top 100, and literally everything else is being redone/enhanced.

Hey Frank with the most Azure dragons to his record, I hope Homm5 is going to be good, or the homm community will continue to fizzle. Only time will tell.

Yes, starting March 16th the Tournament of Honor will be supporting both Homm3 and Homm4 side by side. For this you will be able to player either game, or both. It's all up to you. Vesuvius has told me a couple of the things that he has planned and I think it's all mapped out to be a very interesting united season. There will be something for just about everyone. Right now we are getting to work on getting things set up. Keep looking back here at the boards because as he gets pages and tournaments ready, Ves will post them here for some input. All in all it looks to be a lot of fun and I'm glad I get to be a part of it!
