The grand elf is probably the most important shooter in the game and really what makes rampart as strong as they are.

Indeed, but I always play at impossible, and I was referring to the first week or so. Rampart have their centaurs after all, but tower's got nothing else to rely on.

I have to agree with Ecoris... gremlins surrounded by a gargoyle barrier...with the occasional spell inbetween... that's the tower start...

Ok, say, you have 50000 gold to buy your shooters. You can buy:
10 Titans: 24 att, 24 def, 3000 HP, 500 base avg damage, 11 speed, NO MELEE PENALTY, MIND SPELL IMMUNITY
66 clops: 15 att, 12 def, 4620 HP, 1188 base avg damage, 6 speed
125 Sharpshooters: 12 att, 10 def, 1875 HP, 1125 base avg damage, 9 speed, NO RANGE PENALTY
222 Grand Elves: 9 att, 5 def, 3330 HP, 1776 base avg damage, 7 speed
1250 halfings: 4 att, 2 def, 5000 HP, 2500 base avg damage, 5 speed
With high level Orrin, halfings will turn into a murder machine. Otherwise, I'd go with titans because of speed, durability, specialties and because you won't lose them in minor map battles.
Sharpshooters are a bit overrated IMHO. If you look at clops, they are better in every way (except for speed and special). Even Grand Elves are probably a better deal for the same price

I steal wonder who is better-the titan or the sharpshooter. Titans are very strong,they deal extra damage on dragons,but sharpshooters are like snipers,very good shot.
Well i voted for titan.I've seen how sharpshooters kill with one shot,but if an enemy unit reaches them-they become useless!And if somebody reaches the titans,they can fight like their brothers-the Giants.So,for now,titans are the best for me!

@titans vs sharpshooters:
Since the sharpshooter doesn't get a range penalty it seems to have the advantage over titans. But the titans don't get melee penalty. When I have to fight sharpshooters with titans, I start with haste and move the titans in the first turn, to block the sharpshooters.
The no melee penalty is a very important special for shooters, and this is why I think titans are the most useful shooters.

you've forgotten the 20 gems. 
Anyway I choose Titan. Mind spell immunity and 11 speed.
So unaffected by forgetfulness.
Sharpshooter? Can't do anything if the opponent cast forgetfulness...

Man from reading all those replies I must be stupid to think that Arch Magis are good. But still I like them. Their no melee penalty is awesome.

Master gremlins are the best shooter units in the game because
You can have ~100 of them on day 1. No other army needed until week3.
Master gremlins +bless +slow, and relax.
Titans would be better, but I generally finish the game before building up lvl7 upgrade.. or I occupy some other towns with lvl7 dwellings.
