Red and Yellow Star Guide

I took to mind the idea of creating your own opinions about the red and yellow stars and make an article about them. As yíall maybe know, I spent quite a while here in HC (three months and five/six days) and I know loads of things about it.

Mostly, we all concentrate in creating several posts, discussing in on-topic discussions or just playing word games. This is the proper way to yellow stars. Several flaws, several plusses - thatís what theyíre like. Now, I listed some facts and FAQ about them:

What is and how do I get a yellow star?
Yellow star flaws
Yellow star plusses

What is and how do I get a yellow star?

Yellow star is to represent the primary rank of the member that is only achieved by posting in HC forums and creating threads. Each little star under your avatar shows how many +/- posts the member has made. In order to achieve more yellow stars, you have to post. The table of yellow stars is below:

0-20 posts - no stars: Tavern Dweller
21-50 posts - one yellow star: Hired Hero
51-120 posts - two yellow stars: Adventuring Hero
121-300 posts - three yellow stars: Known Hero
301-800 posts - four yellow stars: Famous Hero
801-2000 posts - five yellow stars: Supreme Hero
2001-5000 posts - six yellow stars: Legendary Hero
5001-??? - seven yellow stars: Undefeatable Hero
???+ - eight yellow stars: ???

Yellow star flaws

The only flaw I can write about is independence from the postís quality. As I mentioned above, you can only achieve yellow stars by posting and creating threads. Though, this rank is independent from the quality of the post. You can make one letter post and you receive a mark of it in your rank. Mostly, members achieve this rank by posting in word-games (Wastelands) and discussing in on-topic, funny discussions (Tavern). Only few members achieve this rank by posting everywhere and posting long and QP deserving posts. This is the flaw that should be noted here in HC.

Also, not a flaw, but an unfortunate thing is only six ranks to achieve. That isnít surely a flaw, but it could be more interesting if we could achieve more ranks. Then, some ranks should lower the number to achieve, while other ones should be heightened or newly created. Still, this thing is almost impossible, so it is meaningless to continue discussion about it.

Yellow star plusses

Although these yellow stars have only one flaw, they have NO plusses. These stars do not make this board unique either specific, only the rank names are different from the others. Though, the yellow stars could get a plus if they were easier (or harder) to get.

Forgot to mention earlier that he Yellow Stars allow you to select a custom Avatar when you have two of them (51 posts).

Other FAQ

Usually the people arenít bound to yellow stars as some are bound to red stars and QPs. Though, the immense amount of short posts in only few threads (Wastelands) can bind the members, so they wouldnít matter at the quality of posts and do not get free from flood-protect so easily.

Personal Opinion

My opinion is more or less fully listed above this section. Yes, I do think it is a good idea to make such thing and I like it quite a lot. Though, I think there are too few ranks. There should be at least 10 ranks, counting from 1st post to 5000th. Also, I should say that Iím not yellow-star-addicted, so it means I have no problem with them. Only problem is having the same amount of stars (which is too hard for me).

Suggestions

Here, Iíll post my names of yellow stars only. Red stars will be listed at the bottom of the post.

0-10 posts - no yellow stars: Tavern Dweller
11-30 posts - one yellow star: Mercenary Hero
31-60 posts - two yellow stars: Hired Hero
61-100 posts - three yellow stars: Adventuring Hero
101-180 posts - four yellow stars: Known Hero
181-300 posts - five yellow stars: Well-known Hero
301-500 posts - six yellow stars: Famous Hero
501-1000 posts - seven yellow stars: Honored Hero
1001-2000 posts - eight yellow stars: Elite Hero
2001-5000 posts - nine yellow stars: Supreme Hero
5001+ posts - ten yellow stars: Legendary Hero

Thatís all about the yellow stars. Now, Iíll discuss the main thing I wanted to - red stars, QPs.

The secondary thing we concentrate into, but which is many times better and necessary, is red stars that consist of our very best QPs, else known as quality points. Many plusses, alike many minuses there are ahead and I think I must tell about them. Here are the contents:

What is and how do I get a quality point? Red star?

Red star is got when collected a number of QPs, while theyíre collected by posting extremely good quality posts. Theyíre hard to get, though, I have five of them. Each QP is needed if you want to get new rank and new bonuses with them. The table about red stars is below:

-8+ quality points - no red stars: Disgraceful
-3 - -7 quality points - one red star: Bad-mannered
-2 - +2 quality points - two red stars: no rank
+3 - +7 quality points - three red stars: Promising
+8 - +14 quality points - four red stars: Responsible
+15 - +25 quality points - five red stars: Honorable
+26+ quality points - six red stars: Admirable

Unlike the yellow stars, red ones have the following bonuses:

Three Red Stars: no flood-protect when editing
Four Red Stars: no flood-protect at all
Five Red Stars: allows to rate threads

Also one thing to mention is that having a negative QP count increases your flood protect for each additional -1 QP you have. At -12 QP you will never be able to post again. At -8 QP you have a flood-protect of about 40 minutes.

That's a plus because it stops flamers and other *rude* members to post unnecessary posts.

Red star and quality point flaws

Red stars have only little, pointless flaws. I can write them in a row:
- Red stars may turn people into QP-obsessed
- Red stars may affect their minds

I think you all know the main flaws, because they were enlisted in other threads quite time ago.

Red star and quality point plusses

Red stars have quite a lot of plusses. First of all, it makes this board unique and specific. It makes us create quality posts, so we do not SPAM and do not break Code of Conduct. Second thing is that we all can achieve some bonuses and remove flood-protect which annoys us very much. Third and the last one, is that we can get -QPs for breaking CoC and violating in HC. The other bonuses were already enlisted in other threads quite time ago

Other FAQ

The one darn thing about these QPs / Red Stars is that people can become obsessed. They become nervous and may lose their mind. They dedicate their life here, just to chat in HC and do not matter whatís happening in the real world. They become jealous of other people and may annoy them with that, so theyíd receive -QP and become nervous. This would happen again and again. But mostly, people become obsessed just because they want to get rid of flood-protect.

Unfortunately, I cannot make the stats Iíve made about all the forums and the percentage of posts. I joined HC not long ago, so I donít know who and why and when got their QPs.

Personal Opinions

I already explained what my opinions are. I do like QPs, but Iím not obsessed with them. Surely, I canít deny that I want to get rid of this flood-protect. I think theyíre unique and cool etc. but I explained this already.

Suggestions

In continuation to yellow star system, I post QP system:

-10+ quality points - no red stars: Banned
-6 - -9 quality points - one red star: Disgraceful
-3 - -5 quality points - two red stars: Bad-mannered
-2 - +1 quality points - three red stars: no rank
+2 - +4 quality points - four red stars: Promising
+5 - +7 quality points - five red stars: Responsible
+8 - +11 quality points - six red stars: Blissful
+11 - +15 quality points - seven red stars: Reputable
+16 - +22 quality points - eight red stars: Generous
+23 - +30 quality points - nine red stars: Admirable
+30+ quality points - ten red stars: Enlightened

I think thatís all in here. Feel free to read and discuss. May this help or interest ya.

EDIT: I edited some of the stuff by using Djive's stuff. This post may not deserve QP, but it should be marked "important" at least.

EDIT: I added some things and odded some others.

EDIT:

I saw a question (down below):

"Why is the post count lower than it should be if you have a certain amount of stars?"

It happens because the post count drops sometimes (when the thread or the post gets deleted). However, most of the time, the yellow star count is not reduced (dunno, if it is a bug).

In this case it can happen if the total post count is higher than the one you have to reach in order to achieve a star even if the post count shows different.

Also it can happen, that the person who posted the post got a post count minus (posted too many posts in a row).

Nice guide, although i dont like your own ideas for names of red/yelow stars. If you have 8qps you would have 6 stars??? Plus i dont think our 4 red star members would like being called "Blissful". Isnt that right Stiven???

I am not obsessed, but as I listed, that's because I'm almost out of my mind because of that flood-protect.

Regnus_Khan I actually think you deserve a Qp for this thread.  Its a good one!

I like your idea on 10 yellow stars, that would be more fun.

Quote:
Three Red Stars: no flood-protect when editing

Actually Three Red Stars are supposed to do this, but they don't.

Plus having 10 red stars would be fun but very complicated.  The stars should give more rewards and that could be difficult with 10 red stars.

Actually the numbers are a bit different.
The first one (Tavern -> Hired): 20

And for the others is the previous number of posts to change status * 2.5

So:
Adventuring: 50
Known: 125

add more possible yellowstars would only make "certain" people spam even more to get it. And we dont want that.

still havent figured out the purpose of knowing how many percent each forum has of the total posts though.. if i wanted to know which forums which had the most/less posts i would just check the actual nr of posts.. how many percent it takes doesnt really matter.

The Yellow Stars allow you to select a custom Avatar when you have two of them (51 posts). So yes, there is a plus with them.

Also one thing to mention is that having a negative QP count increases your flood protect for each additional -1 QP you have. At -12 QP you will never be able to post again. At -8 QP you have a flood-protect of about 40 minutes.

Ego's gonna get involved no matter what (people will find an excuse even without a ranking system), so that type of flaw should be ignored (People becoming obsessed with rank)- besides, isn't being having your life revolve around a GIF on a website punishment enough? The rest I agree with.

I have a little question. Why has AdmiralVeli two!! yellow stars, if he has only 17 posted reply???
Is there any other rule, that increases the yellow star rank of a member? Or has he more reply, and the 17 is false?

Legendary BLACK STARS proposal / Under The Sign Of The Black Mark

Hi Val, hi mods, hi all.

Instead of making a double post, I'll ask you gentlemen to read my full post here please.

For the record, here is the most important part :

So, my suggestion is that :

1) Yellow Stars indicate the QUANTITY of what one posted.

2) RED Stars indicate the QUALITY of what one posted.

3) BLACK STARS indicate the PENALTIES given for bad behaviour.

Then, convert every "-QP" into BLACK STARS, and leave the Yellows and Reds as is.

If you adopt this slight adjustement to your rule system, Val, by all means your rules will remain the same, I'm NOT complaining about them in themselves.

Any and all policy and rule that currently depends on negative QP would simply continue to apply, but as BLACK STARS. You'll still get a Black Star when you break the CoC. You'll still get silenced after that many Black Stars, and banned if way too many and so on and on.

But with this more COMPLETE and FAIR system, one will be able to actually get a REPRESENTATIVE IDEA of who a member is by looking at their rankings.

Like for instance :

Please give it at least some serious thought.

Tia. Legend.

Thats actually a pretty good idea. It will stop people saying things like:

"Ohhh you cant give me a -qp! I worked so hard for my 1 qp and now its gone boo hoo..."

However it may have an opposite effect of people saying:

"I dont care about penalties, i still have my red stars!"

However its a good idea that should be thought about.

First off, thanks for your support (and just plain common sense, in my most humble opinion), DS.
Quote:

Doutlessly, it will. Put in the other side's point of view, it will stop mods and amin saying "You've been a bad boy, so the penalty system being what it currently is, you leave us with no other choice than pretending we can take your talent away from you as a punishment."
Quote:

I honestly doubt so, DS. Black Stars are meant to replace the -QPs, and they will have exactly the same effects for the penalized user. EXCEPT that it won't penalize their GRADES on top of their BEHAVIOUR.

People could still be banned, if they receive the corresponding amount of penalties. The only (and my eyes, MAJOR) difference will be that their good GRADES won't be taken away as a side effect.

Anyways, I'm glad Val seem to actually take some time to think about it seriously (at least I hope that's the reason of his temporary silence). It's all up to you, now.

I've designed the system this way for a few reasons.

- people like accumulating stars, whatever the stars represent. Introduction of black stars will result in people who try to accumulate them within allowable range and display them proudly in their profile. So the current system is designed so that people lose stars for penalties rather than gain stars.

- the current system allows people to make up for, and to "erase" their penalties through earning quality points. It allows penalties to be forgotten and allows people to grow and change. Black stars system labels people for life and invites future discrimination.
