People that speak it as a first language? Roughly 2% if even that, there are some small villages in Ireland where they refuse to speak to you in English at all.
People that speak it fluently, about 7/8%.
People that learn it at school but never take it any further, about 50% (including me, I've forgotten most of it and chose to study French and German).
Which leaves about 40% that don't speak it at all, or who only know enough phrases to please the tourists, and maybe one prayer in Irish that they had drilled into them at school.

If i'm not mistaken, the only "celtic speaking" countries left, if i may say so, are Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Petty really, when you see what english has done to these languages. (curse you, PH!  )
I very much respect the old Celtic culture, religion, music. I have few CDs of celtic music and there's this one song that makes all my hair stand when i listen to it and the mystical language the man sings sounds so magical. Absolutely fascinating!

More for the tune than the words (which are in English) you should get a hold of the song 'She moves through the fair'.
It's my favorite Irish tune.

Countries yes, areas no. Brittany (the NW corner of France) and Cornwall (the SW corner of England) retain celtic links, as does the isle of Man.

Yep, here is prety much like Macedonia.
In elementary school (7-15 - compulsory by law) you learn
the entire history of mankind over the course of last four years(11-15).And then in highschool (15-19) you start all
over again from prehistoric times.

History of Serbia
It all started in the 500s. Right after the fall of the west Roman Empire. The Barbarians from Germania swept through the lands of the fallen empire and created their own kingdoms. In the meantime the Slavs, that were located just east of Germania divided into East, South and West Slavs (I am not quite sure if this happened in 500s, 600s, or 700s,). Serbians were part of the South Slavs. These people then separated from eachother and went into the direction they are named after. South Slavs went down to the norht side of the river Danube. On the other side was the Byzantine Empire (The East Roman Empire). There were many battles between the slavs and Byzantine Empire. There were many wars with other surrounding countries too. The Kingdom of Bulgaria once destroyed Serbia totally.
In 1355, Serbain Empire under the rule of tzar Dushan:
All the kings and emparors of Serbia were proclaimed holy after they died, but tzar Dushan wasn't because he killed his father to get the throne.
Then battle of 1389 in Kosovo plains, Prince Lazar of Serbia on one side and the Ottoman sultan on the other. There is a story that says that before Prince Lazar went into battle that he was asked by God. God asked him if he wants to win the battle and live a short life on Earth, or lose the battle, die and live a long life in the Heavens. Of course he chose the latter. The Turks won that battle. But the bravest hero was a serbian knight named Milos Obilic, rode on his horse right to the sultan Murad, got off and killed him with a knife. Then he was captured and his head was cut off, and Prince Lazar's head was cut off, too. Then the 500 years under the Turkish rule.
In the end of the 19th the Turks retreated. Serbia was now a small country spreading from he borders of Greece to the river of Danube.
Then in 1914, Austro-Hungary declares war on Serbia, accusing the Serbian terrorist party, Black Hand, of killing the Archduke, Heir, of Austro-Hungary. They did it because many of the people in Bosnia were Serbians and Bosnia was under the Austrian rule.
Then France, Britain, and Russia sided with us, forming the Triple Entente; Germany, Italy (until 1915), and Austro-Hangary, the Triple Alliance.
Later after the war, Yugoslavia was formed. A kingdom at that time.
In April 6, 1941, Yugoslavia was attacked by the Nazis. There was a Partian army formed to fight back. The Prince of Yugoslavia fled to England. Then Tito, a partizan leader took control of Yugoslavia and forbid the prince to return. After the war he formed the socialistic country of Yugoslavia. Under Tito the country prospered (actually it was in the mid 1950s when Stalin died I think, because he persuaded Tito to become more communist).
Then, when the communism in most countries fell, Yugoslavia fell apart into Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), and Macedonia. There was a civil war from 1991-1995 before the division. Then Serbia was bombarded by americans, who think that Kosovo belongs to Albanians, and have to mess with everyones business (no offense, Americans).

My local history
Ah Private Hudson still reigns as one of hc top threadmakers. Sorry i do not have the tools to make pictures, but i will give a few historic points of interest of where i live.
Firstly i come from the county of shropshire in England and my town is Telford. Here are some places of interest.
1). Ironbridge. This is where the world first cast ironbridge was made and is still located.
This small part of Telford is very pretty but having some problems due to the fact that there is a lot of waterfront property that is being flooded, it being located right by the river severn. ( Britains longest river ).
To make matters worse it has been reported that the town which is mostly on a bank is slowly sliding into the river.
This problem could cost millions to fix and the the local authorities have elected to shelve the problem.

2). Shrewsbury. This is shropshires county capitol and is of interest because it is the birthplace of Charles Darwin who i think everyone knows is the auther of "The origin of the species". Making him the founder of the theory of evolution.

3). Dawley. Ok it gets a little less interesting now. This is a small estate in Telford thats only claim to fame is a man called captain Webb.
Born and raised in Dawley he became the first man to swim the English channel during the 1800s.
He then foolishly made a huge leap of faith in deciding that it would be a good idea to swim the Niagara falls rapids which resulted in him drowning in a whirlpool. So that was the end of Englands answer to Harry Houdini,
but still to this day he has a pub named after him. Many stories came to be associated with between these two feets him, perhaps not all of them true, but these two definately were.

4). Oswestry. again probably not of much interest outside
of England this small town just outside of shrewsbury is the birthplace to golfer Ian Woosnam and war poet Wilfred Owen.
Wilfred owen started out as a georgian poet in the mould of Lawrence Binyon and Rupert Brook who tended to romanticise war.
Then came 1914 and all of that changed after he signed up to fight and became aquainted with the harsh reality of trench warfare.
Together with the likes of Siegfried Sassoon, Isaac Rosenberg and Charles Sorely he used poetry to launch an assault on war and came to believe that poetry could be written in such a way as to move people to eliminate war forever.
Tragically he was never to give this goal a real chance being killed in the last week of the war in 1918 by a stray bullet.
Ironically he wrote a poem entitled strange meeting in which a man meets up with a soldier he has killed to be told by this man that he had the secret to end all war which now the world would now be denied. Quite creepy.

A Bit More About The Portland Area:
For my recent birthday, I was given a book that I have been looking forward to reading.
It is entitled, "Apple's America".
It is written by a man named R.W. Apple jr who is an associate editor for the New York Times.
The book is described by its author as being "The discriminating traveler's guide to 40 great cities in the United States and Canada".
