Wandering Monsters

I know we have monsters sitting all over maps guarding mines, treasures, passes etc.

I would like to see some wandering monsters roaming around the map.  Especially after you have a week turn and a bunch of monsters show up randomly.

I also think that these bands of monsters should be able to join one another to make larger bands.  This would give you incentive to kill these random creatures before they become to big to handle.

I was thinking that creatures of the same type would join each other.

But i would be interesting if a wandering dread knight or other intelligent monster type walked the map collecting armies of lower level creatures.

Interview...

The main designer of HoMM IV said at AstralWizard site that the new game allows to wandering creatures move a little besides of being in one spot all the time.
I think there should be neutral heroes that could join creatures and attack players heroes and towns...

That sounds good.

How about if the creatures in the outside dwellings spit out there creatures at the beginning of each week so that there would always be various creatures wandering the map even after you cleaned out the area.

I have heard that before...

And I have always thought that it's better idea than "the Month of"-feature.
Each creature dwelling could have own area that they affect and where new creatures are placed every week. However there should be only slight chance this happens because if it happens all the time it would be pain in the rear to "clean" the area...

Maybe it could happen every month...
Also the creatures should be pretty hostile, because some joining creatures already are imbalancing the game.

How about if you have flagged their building there is a 20% chance they will join you.(They would not automatically join you because they feel slighted you didnot buy them)

Other wise they would not join you unless you had diplomacy and were of their town type.

But with diplomacy...

(BTW I have noticed that I use word "but" more than often. I must really be negative person that I always find something to change...)

It would be still too easy to get creatures join you. I personally have got so many bad experiences with expert diplomacy when creatures are joining so easily. Diplomacy is skill that change the ties of the game in favor of you too much.

But I agree that there should be greater chance that creatures join you if you have flagged one of the dwelling nearby or somewhere else...

How about if the wandering monsters look for a place to stay lets say and unguarded mine or mountain pass.  Now if lots of creatures join you, you can dump them in mines to guard them.  Also the diplomacy would only work with creatures aligned with you hero type.  It would be similiar to how a necromancer has hordes of skelletons.

But it cannot be an unbalacing factor like ghosts from HOMM2 or it would warp gameplay too much.

Others have stories too...

I have my own...

I once played necropolis with my friend who played as my allied.
"month of power liches" came. I didn't have diplomacy and with it...it could be even worse...

I got one stack of these liches joining me. It didn't too much time to get Horde of liches to join me and everything started rolling from there.

In the end I had about 10K Power liches divided to 5 stacks. They beat legion of giants with ease...
Not necessarily to say that the map was pretty unpleasant to play after that...too easy are the words...

I have heard players getting 20K Vampire Lords and stuff like that on to their side. It doesn't help if you can put them to guard mines, because you won't...

You want to take them with you with your main army and this only gives more power to strategy of one superhero.

BTW creatures of same alignment already have better chance of joining you than others.

I think diplomacy should be toned down so it wouldn't play so big part in the game. When I make maps myself I put manuy of the creatures to savage-setting so they will never join hero in any circumstances. Sad that you can't chance the hostileness of the creatures of "month of"-feature...

Maybe your hero should be limited to the amount of creatures he can control.  Example 1st level hero can only control x number of hp.  Each level the hero can control more amounts of hp.

If your hero has more hps than he can handle give a percentage chance of the stack rebelling (similiar to beserk or hypnotize spells) or a number of creatures leaving you weak hero to become wandering monsters.

That is a great idea...

Now that in Heroes IV creatures won't need heroes anymore and you in fact can have multiple heroes in army, even army of heroes only, there's the problem who control the creatures?

Should there always be the leader of the unit if more than one hero is present in the army who would be in "control" of creatures?...

But that your idea of control...I must that it's a really great one. This way you would have to really get experience and levels to your hero, not only to that he can fight invidually better but also that he could control more creatures. There could be also new skill that would allow heroes to control more creatures than normally. Leadership would have entirely new meaning, not only the morele effect.

You could of course have huge army lead by inexperienced hero but it could mean as well as morale penalty, troops leaving the army to become wandering creatures and the slight chance of berserk or maybe opponent could (again with diplomacy) get some of them to join you.

I heard somewhere that some creatures of opponent army can join you in HoMM IV before the battle. Not sure though how truthfull the news was maybe it was only rumor...

Maybe each hero should have a rank to go with level.

Level 1 = private
Level 2 = Squad leader
level 3 = corporal.....
up to Feild Marshal

Each rank can control a specific amount of hps so if you have a Captain/Hero and need to control more hps you need a Master Seargent/Hero in your army.

Why not...

Maybe there shouldn't be too many levels of hero ranks. They could be presented as stars in the hero profile.

I would think that there could be pretty big cape between a private and field general when speaking about how large forces they can control...

Maybe you could have a global influence with heroes.

1 Field Marshall
2 General
3 Colonel
4 Lt. Colonel
5 Major
6 Captain
7 Lietenant

8 Sergeant Major
9 Master Sergeant
10 Gunnery Sergeant
11 Sergeant
12 Corporal
13 Private 1st Class
14 Private 2nd Class

As you go up the scale the amount of global hps you controll goes up.

If you have unbalanced troop say a private riding heard on black dragons the chance they rebel would be large, but if one of your heroes is a major the percentage of rebellion lowers because of his influece.

Rebellion could work like attack and defence.
Private 2nd class has 1 rank.
Dragon has rank of 7.
Difference between is -6 so dragons will rebel 60% of time.

Enlisted men only effect troops in your army.1-7
Officers have global effects that add to enlisted men or other officers. 1-7

If you have two majors the private would have +6 to his rank modifier and be able to control the Black dragon.

If you loose one of your good heroes everyones modifiers would change and you could have multiple mutinies.

This way...

It would make bigger difference have multiple high ranked heroes than just one.
Good idea...

I still think there should be only fewer ranks like this:

All the creatures would be like privates. You would have choose one as your leader of troop when hero is not present.
This kind of creature leader would be called sergeant. Some creature specail could allow creature even work leader of some higher than sergeant example as lieutenant or captain.
1. General
2. Colonel
3. Major
4. Captain
5. Lieutenant

Star could present this. When whole star is General and unit without star is private.

You could also have modifiers depending on you heroes actions.

Artifacts awarded like medals of honor that increase or decrease rank influence.

Leadership and moral could be tied to rank, say you could not reach major and above without leadership.

Maybe the rank could work like...

Primary skill.
It could raise as level raises or through other things like artifacts and some secondary skill.

The Global effect would be very important as it would effect to lower level heroes and give them chance to command troops. During town siege the town could affect to heroes rank so he could command little bit more troops than usually. There could be certain structures which could add rank to heroes.

I just love this idea...
It little bit reminds me about the way how Master of Orion 2 handled this controlling factor...If you did build too many ships over your control value the cost of maintenance raised higher...

Maybe Command rank could work only for military/might type heroes.

The game seems a little slanted towards magic heroes now. If you needed a military mind to control more creatures you would have to choose between having an all powerful wizard who can't control vast amounts of creatures or a military genius who has little magic.

This would make you make hard choices between a superhero or a well rounded force of might and magic.
