The human town

One thing that existed in the HOMM series ever since King's bounty was the human town. Be it the "knight" of KB-H2, the "castle" of H3 or the "haven" of H4, these guys were always there. And with every game, some evolution was present:

- In H2, the knights seemed to be very "classic medieval", with no mythology at all. In fact, they were the only town with absolutly no mythology and only human units. The overall feel of the race was that of military order and honour. This was amplified by the fact that all units seemed to be wearing uniforms (all in red) and then "promoted" (nearly all units had upgrades, and those upgrades changed the uniform colour to blue).

- In H3, mythology entered the castle for the first time, with the monks, gryphons and angels. These additions made the town seem more religious. The blue uniforms remained and many units were now bearing the gryphon crest.

- In H4, the uniform changed to purple but overall everything remained the same as H3 (except for the balista replacing the gryphon).

These are things that were with no doubt noticed by most HOMM players. In Ubisoft's H5, however, I have a feeling that the human town will change greatly. This can be easily seen in the concept art:

The uniforms seem to have disappeared. Instead, we see an army that looks like a band mercaneries. This seems to me like a major change, and could be a sign for changes in other towns. I am not against it, as such, since it could be well explained in the plot of the game.

What are your opinions on this? Just how much do you want Ubisoft to change the towns?

Actually I'm not too bothered about the loss of uniforms, though I notice the Griffin is still on the shield.
Maybe it will be explained in the story why they look different.
Maybe it's a departure from the human = good policy of the previous games. I mean, surely there are some humans that must have banded together and not been part of the Gryphonheart hedgemony after the Reckoning.
Which in turn, may lead to disappointment. Heaven knows the storyline in HOMM IV wasn't up to scratch, but if there was to be ANOTHER totally new storyline, unconnected to anything, I'm not sure about that.
And apart from that Balrog-fiery-backed bull creature, these are the only unit pictures released.
I'd like to see more before I make up my mind.

I'm hoping that they become evil, it would be new and exciting, but i think some of the game will lose its glory, but still.. it could be cool.

Nah i reckon evil is deaths department - would be cool though.

I think they do look like a band of mercinaries - almost menacing like. However this just could be the graphics getting better - also they may be ju,st a rough design, they still may be given uniforms, or just have the logo on them somewhere

Seriously it would make sense, evil king = evil town. Evil town = Evil Humans. Evil Humans = Something new, BUT, still something old. Which is something new, but people still know it, which makes sense?

So we go from thinking theyre mercenaries to thinking theyre evil. Hm.
I suspect that H5 might kind of weaken the whole good- evil thing.  I mean, look at H4, in the campaigns there was good necromancer, good pirate, evil wizard, evil Sir Worton...
No angel in the human town?  No! That would be like- be like- Heroes 2!
I think the angel is in the game to stay.  I also think that the humans don't really look evil, just a little sloppy.  And that might even be fixed a little with the graphics.

angel shouldn't have been there in the first place i always thought that the human city should only include humans, paladins, knights, archers, swordsman, pikeman, rifleman (shame there aren't really not mytholigical but can still be cool ) and maybe some other i missed, that's just my HO of course.

No, I think Human town SHOULD include some mythology... I believe like in heroes 3 its perfect...

The griffin is merely a horse that can fight... think of Catherine using it as a mount... And the angels... well its a godly gift for the humans to fight for the good...

Honnestly... if a Crusader was a level 7 creature... it makes no sense to me that 1 single man in a metal armor can kill a Black dragon spitting flames... I mean, the crusader might be all powerful and all, but when the dragon breathes his flames, the crusader is in a bloody oven and he's well done. Of course things are different if the dragon is just a child dragon... but that's not the kind of black dragons we have in HoMM.

Humans have angels in their town, and angels are something humans believe in. Then why not have other towns have something similar? But then again... What do troglodytes, centaurs and goblins believe in? Undeads are out of the question.

I actually think...

Best thing would be having a knight and life/light town separated into two: angels, monks, spirits - light; paladins, champs, peasants - knight.

The loss of uniforms...

well I do not notice that... only the griifin catches my eyes' glimpse

Also dont forget that if you want a evil human town - but still want angels, then all you are creating is devils (i think).

So it has to be either a good human town like normal with angels, or an evil one without angels. I dont think a creature called 'dark angel' would work.

hmm ragnus kahns idea is good, having a more of light magic town, with magical creaters, angels and such, and a more human side but what can replace an angel really?
a champion can't be more powerfull then an angel, so it won't work well hmm but maybe if they do it like in 4, make the champion cheaper, and come in countety, it might work i guess.

I think the human town should always have the "knights in shining armor" feel to it. Therefore, I favor a good-aligned town with some degree of similarity in the colors and stuff that the different units wear...maybe not quite as pronounced as Heroes III, but pretty close...it makes the whole town feel like it has a more unified theme. Now, for a town with creatures that aren't necessarily human or don't necessarily wear "traditional" armor, it makes sense for there to be some incongruity with their colors, etc. (H3 Dungeon town, for example)

Overall, making sure that each town has a unifying "theme" is most important for me, and I think that this can be accomplished with similar colors/banners for the troops in the Human town.

well, there are several possibilities:

PALADIN - the one of the few holy/magical units in the line-up

COLLOSUS - not a structure or some kind of material-made creature. A gigantic man (giant of life) that supports this town.

PEGASUS (or PEGASI RIDER) - extra swift warrior from the ancient times (like bellerophon) with a superior winged horse - pegasus.

EEEK! You scare me. Evil humans? Sounds like living undead. Yes, maybe we can have some sort of good undead too in the human army? Maybe reanimated Paladins/Crusaders?
And yes, humans MUST have mythology.
