Korejora: thx^^
RSF: very nice pic! my advise for the next time u draw sth like this: those black outlines could be changed into lined in darker colors that the rest around it And the hat is not as good as the rest. But on the whole a very good pic imo

@ regnus:
Looks cool for now. I would recomment to make the sand less yellow and less radiant - and maybe making the color-chnage around the sun smoother. I like that wagon and the cactus-boys (dont have any idea of plural for cactus is english) look cool, too.
The only thing that looks a bit not-so-good is the sand in front and the sun-"rings"

@ragnus & competition:
Well, this works as follows: the task is to draw a certain pic untill a deadline (this time 10.dec.) in the give restrictment. here it is the size, max. 150pixelČ. If you want to take part, submitt your wizard-pic befor or on the 10th of december. every gop-member may participate if he/she wishes

Any q's left, IM me

reg
Daddy

EDIT:
The shadow looks like a reflection - u should change that a shadow just shows the outlines of the object, no details (like on the weels here)

One cactus, two cacti

I noticed that reflection thing as well, a shadow should be only one colour unless it is cast on an uneven terrain. No details from the object itself should be included.

I will make the sand MORE yellow and BRIGHTER! I like bright desert sand

as for the cactus... it is "cactuses"

the sand will remain, as it is... I will change the color to yellow (but a bit darker)... ")

as for the sun... I am not skilled at doing "rings" about that

I said cacti too. To be honest though, nowdays both are acceptable.

Anyway, on to important matters: the next IYY tutorial is here. This tutorial is related to the next contest we'll be having and I'm posting it early since Daddy, Woock and I are just too excited about this next project and want other members to practice a bit for it. There will be rather rigid rules for this one, so read carefully!

Tutorial: Buildings

In this tutorials I shall teach one style for drawing semi-isometric buildings. This style is similar to that used in the original Prince of Persia game (except that they use the more conventional isometric slope).

The steps in this tutorial are not only guidelines but actual rules for drawing the building contest that will soon come.

Before we start: the step that comes before the first step is the most important. We must decide on the exact angle that will be use for the entire drawing. I'll make it easy for you guys by not giving you any choice: the angle is 45 degrees. Pi/4 in radians, if you're a math guy. Why 45 degrees? It's pretty damn convinient, that's why. The slope of 45 degrees is 1. That 1/1. 1 vertical pixel for 1 horizontal pixel. It results in a very clean and crisp line, and is very easy to note when zooming in (a nice diagonal of pixels).

Did you know? Holding shift while using the line tool in paint will draw a horizontal, vertical or 45 degree line. Play with it, it's cool and can be very handy for our purpose. Another way of using that neat 45 degrees is the diagonal brush. (By the way, if you don't know this yet, holding shift and drawing a rectangle will draw a square. Holding shift while drawing an oval draws a circle!)

Before starting, we also want to know the thickness of the walls in pixels, and the height of each room.

Did you know? When drawing a line, its length in pixels is displayed at the bottom of your screen, so that you can measure things. Damn, paint is cool.

Step 1: A Single Wall

A single wall. Nothing more, nothing less. Here's how to do it: Draw a single tall rectangle where the height is the height of a room, and the width is the width of a wall. Now draw 3 diagonal lines (45 degrees, you didn't forget, did you?): one at the top-left corner, one at the top-right and one at the bottom right. All lines must be of the same length but exactly what length it is doesn't matter. Look at my finished picture and do something like that, maybe a bit more if you want the building to have more depth to it. Floodfill all the surfaces you just created with some light color. If you want to use some sort of texturing for the walls (like bricks, or wallpaper), this is the time to do it. Don't forget that even for this purpose we must use the 45 degree angle!

Step 2: Oh My! Hardwood Flooring!

It could be a good idea to draw the floor seperate from the wall. The floor is a block just like the wall. In fact, if you flip your wall by 270 degrees, do a horizontal flip and you get a floor! Extend it, though, so that it's nice and long. Make sure to keep backup copies of your wall and floor seperate from the rest. Just as with the walls, you can add the textures (like hardwood planks that are either horizontal or at 45 degrees). You can always add textures later, but this way will save you lots of work later.

Step 3: Got Glue?
Time to stick it all together. This is really easy: cut and paste the wall on the floor so that the  two 45 degree lines fall together nicely. Then you can put the ceiling (just another floor) on top of that. Don't forget this simple rule - start from the bottom left, finish the building until the bottom right, then start working upwards. This is done so that your overlaps work correctly.

Step 4: Cut it out!

There are several lines that will be useless in your picture, so don't forget to cut them out. Such lines are created when two walls are placed on top of each other (this is actually one single wall, so the line between them is useless) and also where walls meet the ceiling.  Once you finish all that, your picture should look like figure 4. Now add some colours and textures for the back walls , add some doors, maybe a window or two and you're done.

Note 1: Don't think you're actually doing isometric 3D when making buildings like this. You are only using a simplified appropach I formulated for buildings.

Note 2: You may have noticed that this tutorial does not teach you how to select colours or how to design buildings that look good. There is one simple reason for this: this is the first time I'm making a building of this sort myself and don't have enough experience to tell you what looks better. Didn't stop me from making up those rules though . I am hoping that Daddy would submit a tutorial for making rooms that look nice.

Practice and train, pixelartists, for your skills will soon be put to the test when the biggest project of the GOP starts!

It is cool - but there is one terrible snakc!

U saved it as jpg!
For pixeart, please use only .gif or .png - as it keeps the sharp edges and contrasts we want
Um, and dont save ur pic as jpg, gif or png in panit - do that with Photoshop or Irfan view, as Paint's save-options dont work well with other than bmp

Doesnt change the fact that the wizard looks cool.

I think we should consider running more than one contest at the same time. So we will have small contests that last only like 5 days or something. Others that last like 2 weeks and some big ones that might go for a month. The voting would have to be done outside the thread just because it would be a mess. Of course not everyone would be able to do everything, but I think that it would give the people who do have the time, some projects to do because it's fun.

Like I was thinking that we could come up with some small things that would be easy to do. We already get lots of ideas for contests that aren't used. Most of them are good, so instead of forgetting about them, let's use em.
