Need help with Might & Magic I

Yeah, the original Book One, Secret of the Inner Sanctum.  Not HOMM1.

MM1 is a DOS game that I'm trying to play on a 3.2GHz XP Pro system.  Obviously, it runs way too fast.  I tried Mo'Slo, but even that won't slow it down enough to play the darn thing.

The questions:

1) How do I slow the game, or the DOS window, enough to play it?

2) Is there a QUIT key for this thing?  I'm getting tired of using End Task on it.

3) (This is actually for MM3-5) How do I get these DOS games to use my sound card?  IRQ 17 didn't exist back then.

In windows XP and 2000 you should be able to change the amounts of memory a DOS application is allowed to use. My vote is set them all to minimum. Hope it helps.

There are also programs like moslo and DOSbox that can slow it down for ya. In the case of DOSbox, you'll also be able to quit by alt+f4.

Which are the M&M games that are free. How the hell do you play them. Do you just keep firing at a monster..?

well you could do like me and pick up a old dx-33 off the street, but i guess that may not be a option

mo-slow works, you will need to modify your autoexec.bat and config.sys (in the file properties, rightclick properties, play in dos, custom config), find out what kind of soundcard you have, and if its even possible to config your card to different irc for sound-blaster compatible.

my experiance with slowing programs is they slwo the wrong things, maybe there better now, but when i went to play old games, the intro would be really slow, and the rest of the game to fast.

if you have access to a slow system thats your best bet. worth hanging onto

Yay, that dood it!

IYY:  Thanks!  DOSbox does what I need.  Mo'Slo only went to 1% of cpu speed, which was still too fast.  I had to set DOSbox at a mere 150 cycles to get it working.  Yeesh!

Now if I could just stop dying so often...

Alloy,

Yup, you're confused.  H1 != MM1 ... and Isles of Terra is MM3.

Pally,

Do what?  Stop dying?  I haven't figured that out yet.  Although now that the battles are slower, it does take longer to die..  Oh, you mean the cycle rate! Three ways:

1) Play with ctrl-F11 and ctrl-F12 to change the speed.

2) Grab Boxer, a GUI front-end.

3) Email me and I'll send you my .conf and .bat and .lnk
