Special Abilities..other suggestions on how i would make H5

Special Abilities

Im basing this off the creatures of HOMM3, as i have never played HOMM4.

Each creature should have some sort of special ability, that no other, or very very few creatures have. Some already do, but most dont.

Castle

Pikeman/Halbeirder - Ok i actually cant think of one here

Marksman - every 10 Marksmen reduce the range/wall penalty by 2%. Think about it. In real life, not everyone is equally skilled at everything, are they? I mean, if you have 10 archers, isnt there a chance that one will be really good at it? So like 1 out of every 10 helps the total range penalty.

Griffin - Already has one

Swordsman/Crusader - The crusader already has one..but i know something better, i mean, by definition, a Crusader is one who fights for a certian religion, most often Christianity. So perhaps, a chance to convert an evil creature with each blow. Or a certian bonus to Inferno creatures

Monk/Zealot - See Crusader

Cavilier/Champion - Already has one

Angel/Archangel - Already has one.

Rampart

Centaur/Centaur Captian - They should have the same jousting bonus as a Champion, for obvious reasons.

Dwarf - Already has one

Wood Elf/Grand Elf - See Marksmen

Pegasus/Silver Pegasus - Already has one (+2 spell points per spell when pegasi is present..Betcha didnt know that!)

Denderoid Guard - Already has one

Unicorn - Already has one

Green Dragon/Gold Dragon - Breath attack should have a chance to permantly burn the victim, similar to the Wyverns poison attack.

Tower

Gremlin/Master Gremlin - I dont know, but these little guys seem to be the type to cast some sort of spell. Perhaps, they can damper the effect of all spells casted on the battlefield, as sort of a curse/blessing

Gargoyle - They should have the ability to scare the victims, lowering their defense.

Stone Golem/Iron Golem - Already has one (Only takes a certian damage percentage from spells)

Mage/Archmage - Already has one.

Genie/Master Genie - ALready has one

Naga - Should be similar to a Hydra and Cerebi

Giant/Titan - They really dont need nothing...

Stronghold

Goblin/Hobgoblin - Im Mythology, Goblins are known for being sneaky. So perhaps when attacking a high level creature, perhaps level 5-7 creatures, they can steal some of your resources.

Wolf Rider/Raider - Already has one

Orc - Should throw twice

Ogre/Magi - Magi already has one

Roc/Thunderbird - Already has one

Cyclops/Cyclops King - Already has one

Behometh/Ancient Behometh - Should have a chance to do double damage, or perhaps make them a sorta carnivore, where when they attack, they can heal some of their hitpoints, sort of like a vampire, but they dont ressurect.

Fortress

Gnoll/Gnoll Maraduer - See Goblin

Lizard/Lizard warrior - Ok i am stuck on this one too

Dragon Fly/Serpant Fly - Already has one

Basilisk - Already has one

Gorgon - Already has one

Wyvern - Already has one

Hydra - Already has one, but as suggested in another thread, they should be able to cross moats with no penalty

Dungeon

Troglodyte - Already has one

Harpy/Hag - Already has one

Evil Eye - Should be able to shoot twice for upgrade only

Medusa - Already has one

Minotaur - Should attack twice. I mean if a crusader can, a Minotaur should definitly be able to

Scorpicore/Manticore - A sort of roar can be used, like to cast. It can lower the defense of a selected unit, by scaring them. They ARE part lion

Red Dragon/Black Dragon - See Green/Gold Dragon

Inferno

Imp/Familar - ALready has one..

Magog/Gog - Already has one, but it should be removed!

Cerebus/Hell Hound - Already has one..Should have some sort of poison bite

Demon - Should have a reverse effect of the crusader (Chance to convert any good aligned creatures to evil)

Pit Fiend - Already has one

Efreet - Should be spellcaster like Genie

Devil - should be able to ressurect their allies, like the archangel.

Necropolis

Every creature in this town has a special Ability

Conflux

Im not even going to go into it.

Switches

Castle

1. Pikemen
2. Archers
3. Griffin
4. Monk
5. Caviliers
6. Crusaders
7. Angels

Crusaders should be higher than champions, as in H2. Because, Champions dont even use real swords. I mean they use jousting poles.

Rampart

1. Dwarf
2. Elf
3. Centaur
4. Pegasi
5. Denderoid
6. Unicorn
7. Dragon

Centaurs should be a level 3 creature, with Dwarf and Elf,   as level 1 and 2. I mean, look at it realistically, What would be stronger. A Half man half horse with a long pole, or a short dwarf with a axe? honestly. The Dwarf aint got NOTHING on the Centaur. And the Elf is basically a human with pointy ears. So Centaurs are them, plus a horse.

Tower

1. Gremlin
2. Golems
3. Gargoyles
4. Magi
5. Genies
6. Naga
7. Giants

Gargoyles should be higher than golems. Gargoyles have pointy fangs and sharp claws. Golems just punch really, really hard.

Stronghold

1. Orc
2. Wolf Rider
3. Ogre
4. Goblin
5. Cyclops
6. Roc
7. Behometh

Something that has always puzzled me. The roles of the Ogre and Goblin. Goblins are typically weak in this game..but why?? I mean, look at the weapons? Let me compare this. Would you rather be stabbed by Gary Coleman, or beaten with a Baseball bat by Barry Bonds? You probably chose beaten with a baseball bat. The goblin should do more damage, i mean the ogre should have an ability to stun, but oh well.

Also the Orc and Wolf rider should switch places, simply because i say so.

Cyclops and Roc. The cyclops have to haul big heavy boulders around, to throw, while Rocs and swing down and rip a victims throat out from the air.....yea.

Fortress

1. Gnolls
2. Lizardmen
3. Dragonflys
4. Basilisks
5. Wyvern
6. Gorgon
7. Hydra

The Wyvern and Gorgon should switch places because the gorgon just seems naturally more powerful.

Dungeon

1. Troglodytes
2. Beholders
3. Harpys
4. Medusas
5. Scorpicores
6. Minotaurs
7. Dragons

The beholds and harpys should switch places for a simple game reason, two shooters shouldnt be right after each other.

Scorpicores and Minotaurs should switch places as well. Minotaurs are big huge tough guys, with huge ass axe's. Scorpicores are part lion, part bat, and part scorpion. Tell you what. Pit The Rock with a huge axe against a lion, bat, and a  scorpion. Tell me who'd win.

Inferno

1. Imp
2. Hell Hound
3. Gogs
4. Demons
5. Pit Fiends
6. Efreet
7. Devil

Hell hound and gog should switch places because the hell hound is a damn dog!  a DOG! The gog is a creature with a burning tail who hurls huge fireballs!

Necropolis

1. Zombie
2. Skeleton
3. Wight
4. Liches
5. Vampires
6. Dread Knights
7. Ghost Dragons

In traditional mythology and fantasy, the first step of undeadism is a zombie. I mean a persons skeleton doesnt pop right out. They would become a rotting corpse, then a skeleton.

Vampires seem logically more stronger than liches. Liches are just skeletons that are fancy and have a long staff.

A few more notes on some features in H5..

I would bring back pretty much the same style as H3. You know, 7-8 castles, 6-7 creatures all with upgrades, and a magic and might hero for each castle.

Pikeman/Halbeirder-has a 40% chance to decrease enemies attack by 25% by disarming thier weapon(since they have long weapons), only works on creature with a weapon

Lizard/Lizard warrior-has a 20% chance to block 50% of damage, kind of camoflauge.

nice job, i especially like the castle changes like making the centaur stronger

Pikemen/Halberdier -- Hold the Line -- While taking a defense action, due to the long reach of their weapons they make the first strike.

Crusader -- Perhaps... since they are religious etc, they gain bonus to stats for having angels on the field and slight bonus damage vs demons?

nice idea zekal but with the crusader, what about they do like 10% damage to all demon/inferno type creatures with angels present instead(unless this is what u meant originally)

Sounds good. I guess it depends if they are going to be a higher or lower level unit in H5... but they certainly need something as two slashes is no different to one since they can only slash the same enemy twice.

Which upon typing that makes me think... what if they Could split their two slashes and slash two different enemies?

i dont think that is a good idea zekal it would make them too strong. that idea could only be included if they were the top of the castle like town

maybe +1 or +2 morale woulde be better

Let's analyze (from a historical viewpoint)

Polearms (pikes, spears, helbeards) are effective against mounted units and are good for a defense line.
Work even better with a tower shield, but then the spear is mostly held by one hand, thus, less attack power.

Two-handers are effective against anything in melee. But suffer against ranged attack as one cannot have shields.

Maces/hammers/morningstars - work wonders if used by mounted units, excellent against light & medium armor. Less effective agaisnt heavy armor

Bow/Longbow - great range and rate of fire. Effective agqainst lighter armor and some medium types (chainmail is effective against them for instance)

Crossbow - sluggish rate of fire, but great attack power.

To make it more detail one should break the damage type weapons do (blunt, pierce, slashing).

That's getting a bit D&D, something heroes has never explored before.
I'm not sure I'd welcome it, too much strategy can hurt a game as much as too little.

might illustrate how "ineffective" hammer is against plate armor (compared to sword).

I said LESS EFFECTIVE, not innefective,

A well done full plate mail will absorb most of the impact.
Hit someone in leather armor of chainmail and you'll break half their bones.

It's allso dependant where you hit someone and how that someone moves.

It's not the same hitting a static helmet and moveing arm, for instance...

then please replace the word 'ineffercive' with words 'less effective'. i am not english language expert, but i think it's a matter of taste, because i said it in the context of 'how', if you want to go to that level of nit-picking.

and please do look at the videos, they should be self-explaining.

a heavier sword against chanin should also break bones and i would rather guess that a hammer might go through chain (found no hammer against chain video, though).

other videos on that site show effectiveness of swords on chain (and what's under it), meat, etc, much better than a page of my blathering.
