qft. nowadays anarchy seems mostly used with the meaning of chaos, but those people have no idea what they are talking about.

Well reality is that they are right too...in Greek Anarchy truly means chaos but the anarchist theory is the political Anarchy...which is formally called Anarchism to be seperated from Anarchy...

truly = etymologically for me, and hence:
anarchy = an + archi = lacking (steritiko) "a" + archi = lacking authority (in the sense of leaders/government/higher power/etc).
Of course chaos, is another usage for the word but it is chaos in the sense that it is the result of lacking enforcement laws, etc.
Third, anarchy (anarchia), also referes to the political ideology of anarchism as you say; i.e. self-organization, self-preservation, etc.
