I think you misunderstood me..

I meant that since the present economie revolves around petrol, there is no REAL incentive in changing the technologie to something more fuel efficient or environmentally sound.

What I was trying to say is that there is no reason why cars are not electric, solar powered, or run on compressed air except that alot of people are making money of gas right now... so why would THEY want to change that?

what about a mass bike system???

don't think it would work...
I'd have to bike an hour and a half to get to my job... and my 8 hour day would then become a 11hour day (with travel).  And it's not great biking conditions in 20 below in a snow storm!!

Ottawa could have a very efficient light rail transit system (or those mega fast trains).  you could build 2 large circular tracks that connect in the middle (almost a figure 8 but more like 2 squares interconnected on one side)... that would pretty much encompass the whole of ottawa!

(and it would suck to bike to my dad's cottage!!)

well even if the economy revolves arounf petrol, wouldnt you like to spend $2 instead of $50 every time u refuel. the only guys making money off gas right now are ppl that sell it so wouldnt buyers want a cheaper alternative?

(or maybe i am missing the point again)

bike is for short trips, public transport for long trips. take the train to work and the bike. but that wouldnt work in cananda or even australia. it gets to about 40 degrees up here (i think that is 110 in fareinhiet). who would bike in that weather

and u could turn the bike to ur dads into a weekend camping trip with the final destination as ur dads house

I think it's me that's unclear...
(or leaving alot between the lines)

if all these companies are making great money due to petrol costs, why would a car company feel the need to create better more cost effcient and energy saving alternatives?  There's no incentive... they make cars that run on fuel, we buy'em, we need fuel, fuel goes up!
(don't be surprised if the car companies are in league with the petrol industry)

(it's hard to bike 150KM with a 2-4 of beer on your back!)

think about it this way

u are just some guy that can pay the bills and all that and has a bit left over. then u go make a car that runs on air pressure. u then take out a loan from the bank and start up a car company and sell these air pressured cars.

soon u will be rolling in cash

is that enough incentive???

(and also pretend that u are a car freak)

i would agree if that guy can pull it off...

what i've been trying to say is that the present auto manufacturers have no incentive to drop their market and start with a new car... if they were smart, they would, so that they could monopolize both the petrol market of cars and the natural ressource vehicles.

(so are we gonna start that business??)

About the vehicle issue.  Not too long ago there was news coverage of all electric vehicles, and vehicles that ran on alternate fuel sources.  Then they suddenly just vanished.  Sure the E85 alternative come out, and hybrids, but the vehicles that needed no petrol at all are nowhere to be seen.

The issues these vehicles had were low top speed, power supply problem (for the electric you had to plug them in to get charged, for the solar well at night you tended to run out of power), and supply.  Top speed was about 40mph I believe, so yes they were slower then most vehicles.  Still, you would figure that people would be lining up (especially environmentalist) to get those vehicles.  Yet no car company/seller/ect were selling them.  Then, they just poofed.  It is highly likely that the people who created them were paid exorbent ammounts to not release these designs to the public.

I too have wondered why such excessive top speed, and have no clue.  I do know that if you drive 5 mph slower then normal you get much better gas milage.  There are now vehicles with over 60mpg available, however.

As for girls, I probably shouldn't tell ya this...but guys are as confusing to us as we are to them.  Just so you know

yeah theres a movie called "Where did all the electric cars go" (I think)

The entire US economy, not to mention most of the rest of the developed world, is entirely based around petrol. Cars are the symbol of consumerism in the modern world and their past dependency on petrol was what alot of people cashed in on.

And think about what it will be like when China and other developing countries begin to use as many cars as the MEDCs.

They apparantly are still being sold.  There is conversion kits available also to make other vehicles into electric.  Add about 7k to the price of any vehicle and you can make it into an electric. Anyhow..yes that means you can A) help the enviornment.  B) your pocketbook (when gas prices become even worse).  Of course keep in mind that they only go so far before running out of power, and you need to find places to plug them in to recharge them (think it is 5 hrs for a full recharge).

They're making them again now, I can't remember which car company.

I heard they should be on the market next year, and that certain celebrities have already placed an order for them.
