Sloppy?

I don't know if I'm the only one to think this, but Heroes IV looks a lot more sloppy than Heroes III. The towns themselves just look like they took a random terrain generator in Bryce and plopped down the buildings on top of it... something an amatuer would do. And it seems to me that they're rushing the game a little bit... it doesn't seem to be as worked out and as thorough as Heroes III was at this point. I don't know... there are a lot of changes which I don't know will be for better or for worse, but personally I don't like the way this is turning out. Especially the fact that now we're DECREASING the amount of creatures to a ridiculous number, and it's becoming more and more like Age of Wonders if any of you have played that.... Oh well, just my 2 cents.

In Heroes3 you only had 56 town creatures and 6 nutral for a total of 62(Personally I don't count upgrades as a distinct creature) in heroes 4 you have 48 town and 18 nutral for a total 0f 66.  That is 4 more than heroes 3 so it is a fallacy to say there are less creatures.  The expansions gave us more creatures in heroes 3 so knowing 3do we can assume that heroes 4 expansion will have more towns and creatures.

The only town that really looks sloppy is the chaos town, which also has the most screen shots out. The thing is that the chaos town is supposed to look sloppy, it's the town of CHAOS after all. Try looking at the order town and you will see it looks much more like an h3 town.

Maybe you haven´t noticed... but when the towns were first shown they looked a lot different from what they are now.

I am sure they will still improve the towns.

If heroes 4 had upgrades, there would be much more creatures, and upgrades were still the same creature, maybe just with a bit of armour wacked on, or a different coloured robe.

But the towns on the adventure map may not be fully built. Which is why it looks a bit 'sloppy'.
But as Cheesus said, i think they'll try and make the towns look as good as possible.

The new settings in the town will only mean that we will use more low lewel creature since high level are only produced two a week....
Don´t really like that they removed the 4,5,6 level beacuse they really dominated the old game, think about the Might gorgon or Vampire Lords...
Now most fights will be decided between crappy creature like halfling and peasants...
Since we dont know soo much about the magics power soo far i also think that the best producer (read stronghold and preserve) will be the best castles....

How about giving 3do the benefit of the doubt.  The game isn't even out and everyone is already crying.  Maybe they have a good reason for making only four levels, like making more strategic choices.  The difference between level is now much more dramatic and lower levels are more useful.  Get real, how many of you use 1st and 2nd level creatures after you start having your 6th and 7th in numbers, you usually spend your money on the big boys unless you have obscene amounts of cash.  In 4 it looks like all of the creatures will be useful and worth buying(since they all have specials) and your choices will make each game more unique.

As your hero grows he goes from ordinary to unique and your town may have a different feel everytime you play.

It's all new period. & it's all good as far as I can see.

personally...

...i´m not the least bit worried, abou the town´s looks or looks in general, since they will most probably polish this in due time; what worries me and is at the same time (in my humble opinion) the biggest change from homm 3 to homm 4 is the heroes´ interaction - will i just run with the mighty barbarian and sweep the mines? will i get wiped by lots of any high level creatures? true, if i win the battle my hero gets resurrected or whatever, but still - i dare say the whole game depends on how the mechanics of this system will function...
...as for the creatures, i agree here with you Oldtimer (and i know many may not) - there are many creatures; i didn´t actually count them, but i trust you on this one
...the trick is you can´t use them all, so you´ll have to choose - this adds somewhat to the strategy, since your choice will depend on the map, opponent/s and a dozen other things...
...i actually do use lvl 1 creatures late in the game, but only skellies lol (especially with Galthran ), so right again
...another thing: how will being able to build as much as you like (provided you have money and resources) affect the game?
...these are the things that worry me, far more than town´s looks...

I believe that the interesting question is how are you going to develop your hero?  Now it's easy, you have 4 regular skills that are the same and 8 secondary skills that increase until level 24 or so after that all heroes are basically the same.  In 4 you have a choice of 5 primary skills and 15 secondary skills, which means that you keep increasing skills untill level 99 or so.  Do you really think that you can get a level 99 hero?  Probably not, which means that you have to choose which skills your hero will specialize in.  To be an arch mage you must master 3 magic schools(12 levels) plus expert of the secondary levels(27 levels assuming you need to expert the 3 sub skills in order to get a master) so it will be a level 39 magic user who is the arch mage.

Are there going to be enough creatures and experience stones to create enough exp. for you specialized heros.  Hero specializations I forsee are a magic hero, a might hero, a noble hero(help with mining, estates and creature growth)and a stealth hero(scout and take enemy mines).

Another question how is the experience going to be divided?  does eveyone get the same exp. after battle or do you only get exp. for creatures you kill, or do you only get exp. for creatures killed in your command radius.

I was a little disappointed with the four creature thing at first also but I have to admit that I usually only take three or four creature types in my armies. However the rest are very handy for castle defense; these usually being the slower units. So I think four types will just translate to better strategizing.
I do so like the upgrades though and a creature that has more than 1 is even better. I really liked that in Disciples although the idea is slightly different.
I'm currently using Gelu which I entered as a random pick and got him at the Tavern and he has 224 Sharpshooters and 11 Gold Dragons. I can group these into whatever stacks I see fit plus if I get other creatures joining me then I have lots of room.

What will be the maximum number of stacks now?

as for me...

...i really couldn´t claim i like the upgrades at all...
...it certainly does feel good to upgrade your say... wood elves to grand elves, but when you´ve got all types of them, some creture generators you´ve upgraded, others you haven´t, you´ve found a hill fort, but now you need to form another hero chain to reach it and upgrade your green drags... it´s a bugger
...all in all, i support *no upgrade* policy, but naturally, it´s a matter of personal taste

1- If they keep same experience scale,Heroes should level faster, creatures will have much more hp's,not counting hp's from Heroes you killed.

If its not like HoMM3,and tougher to reach next level, you wont see many archmage.

2-Now you can only pick 5 creatures for each towns, but you can have Heroes for free slots.I cant see why they would have put 7 creatures by towns and allow you to get more than one Heroe in your army,a couple of units would never be used.

3- Lots of HoMM3 units just look the same, not much difference between a goblin,a gnoll,a pikeman,....
I prefer less creatures but unique ones.

4- I like the idea to get upgraded creatures, but they would need to have a good stats upgrade, much higher cost and really tougher to upgrade buildings.Anyway, wont have any upgrades.

5- How will the experince be shared is a good question,i expect it to be split between you Heroes.

ex: 2k xp for 2 Heroes.... 1k each.

Could be used to boost "newbie" Heroes really fast, not sure if its the best way.

About graphics,i think some creatures look stoopid,i liked the HoMM3 ones for most part.I think every creatures under your control should have at least a bit of your flag color.

I dont worry too much about graphics, bring me better challenges and i'll be happy.Cant wait to learn more about magic.
