ICTC: The Arctic Town

there's lack of barbarian town and lack of arctic town, so here's my arctic barbarian town.
no-brainer imho, and almost no creativity used, which is imho a good thing, as you can have of those 'yer good old' familiar solid creatures.

as norse mythology is in almost every game, i would suggest some siberian mythology istead, especially now that we have a russian developerexplorers and missionaries were bewildered by cannibalism in siberia when europeans had already forgotten about it, and so some siberian nations got names which translate to english as man-eaters and self-eaters (mordva, samoyed). also, from the descriptions of those journeys, i have gotten the impression that ogre mythology might have originated in siberia. anyway, just found out about the contest in the last minute, too little time to try to check that.

whatever, wasn't there the world egg in nival's world creation myth? btw from a siberian mythology overview: 'Less known is the motif of the universal bird Ine Narmun’ (mdE ‘great bird’), who lays the world egg (mdE&M Ine al, mdM Oziu al). The egg yolk turns into the round earth, the eggshell into heaven
and the underworld.'
in a siberian creation myth there were 3 suns that we don't have in homm5, but nevertheless, it's an egg of a dragon, and might need some cooling before it becomes habitable.

creature summary:
level 1: gnoll
level 2: woodsman
level 3: werewolf
level 4: ogre
level 5: white tiger
level 6: yeti (or northern eagle)
level 7: northern frog

========
so, here we begin:

name: Frostia

emblem:

desription:
they keep to themselves, they are hunters and fishermen. traditionally they don't like demons, but they also don't like anyone else who interfers with their business. lately, some of them have started talking about expanding their territory and revenging the other races for taking their lands. they are a mix of supernatural creatures and humans, in isolation they have preserved the old cannibalistic ways. their most symbolic creature is the cannibalistic ogre which is a huge sized human like the ancient humans were. their most characteristic spell is snowstorm which, after cast, travels the battlefield, dislocating creatures on it's slightly winding path, depending on creature stack health and strength of snowstorm.

history:
in the beginning the world, hatched from a dragon's egg, was all hot and an elemental frost fragon was created to cool it down. it was a hard job and once done, the frost dragon and the minions it created were overpowered and didn't want to let go of the land they had worked on, and the world started to become too cold. demons first fought frost forces and drove them to the north.
frost could hold it's own in the northern lands, relatively isolated. their only contact with other civilisations was with humans who settled in the nearby tundra. those humans were quickly made slaves of the more powerful frost creatures, but life in the somewhat harsh conditions turned their relation more friendly over the centuries they lived together.

level 1: gnoll, upg. gnoll chieftain
description:
gnolls are ancient low level habitants of the north. they were actually called 'dog faced men' in folklore, but called them gnolls because the original name sounds cumbersome in english, and the ad&d invention (i.e. gnoll) is way too similar in appearance. here they are northern spirits and don't know anything about ad&d gnolls. the unupgraded unit is armed with a hunting knife.
abilities:
average level 1 unit stats.
two attacks (second attack is bite).
upgrade:
gnoll chieftain (or gnoll warrior) has either better armor or better weapon. if better weapon, then weapon attack damage is doubled compared to unupgraded gnoll, but bite damage remains the same.

level 2: woodsman, upg. hunter
description:
a bit larger and stronger than a normal human, dressed in dark fur coat that provides some armor, wielding a woodaxe.
abilities:
average level 2 unit stats.
upgrade:
hunter is same but also has a throwing spear for a short ranged attack (like centaurs and orcs in homm4).

level 3: werewolf, upg. shaman
description:
same breed of humans as woodsmen, but weaker and devoted to study of magic.
abilities:
below average stats for level 3 when in human form.
spellcaster: frenzy, curse.
can shapeshift to werewolf form during battle which is non-spellcaster average melee fighter but is uncontrollable like berserkers in homm4.
upgrade:
added spells: cure, disease, snowstorm.

level 5: ogre, stone orge
description:
a human-like giant (smaller than most giants) with long black beard, dressed in fur, wielding a gnarled club (an uprooted tree would be nice). cannibalism and large size are his distinguishing features.
abilities:
above average health points and damage.
slightly below average speed and initiative.
below average defense.
devour (a percentage of damage done to living creatures heals top creature).
upgrade:
more health and damage.
looks larger than normal ogre.
stone club instead of a wooden one.

level 4: white tiger, spirit tiger
description:
typical white tiger, spirit tiger has 2 heads, one for this world and the other for underworld.
abilities:
lower than average defense.
other stats above average, especially speed.
upgrade:
2-headed attack.

level 6: yeti, upg. sasquatch
description:
a beastly humanoid race of giants, larger than ogres, covered with natural white fur, attacks with claw and maybe also bite. maybe somewhat related to gnolls.
abilities:
cold immulity, fire vulnerability
upgrade:
can throw blocks of ice with splash damage when standing on snow terrain in battlefield (unlimited ammunition).

level 7: north frog, upg. blizzard frog
description:
frost frogs were the first and most powerful minions of the frost dragon while cooling the world with their frost breath.
abilities:
cold immunity
frost breath
creates an area of snow terrain around him (neighboring tiles turn to snow terrain in the battle screen wherever he stands) and always walks on snow (the tile under him turns to snow terrain)
upgrade:
every attack also releases a snowstorm (in addition to frost breath)
maybe larger area of snow terrain where it stands (floats) on battlefield.

Not that bad, but with a nicely done history, you could have scored another 7-10 points.

hey, what do you mean by no history? i cannot edit the post anymore to make it bold and red anymore, but it's there.

it's all in the mythical and ancient ages, that's why there are no dates, see:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/timeline.shtml.
they were driven to the isolated glaciers in the mythical age, you know. and the contact with humans who settled in the tundra was in the anceint age.

the four real problems that i see are:
1. you have to get the address of the emblem from quote reply and copy it into your browser, maybe hot.ee doesn't support displaying images on other sites (well, as i mention it, the address is 'www.hot.ee/homunculus/emblem.GIF').
2. ogre and tiger are written in correct order of levels, but their level numbers are not correct.
3. in the race part there is 'desription' instead of 'description'.
4. fullstops (the dots) missing in the end of level 6 and 7 abilities statements.

========

as this problem is crleared, i guess i must apologize for not posting the town earlier for discussion, i just read about the contest a day or two ago, and hadn't decided to post a town until there was just 2 hours left until closing time. so, i guess it's inappropriate to start strategy discussions right now (nevertheless, hint 0: ogre; hint 1: shaman; hint 2: sasquatch much like the cyclops; hint 3: blizzard frog; hint 4: they are all upgraded versions except ogre; hint 5: no damage spells). and too bad there wasn't room for the eagle, because birds connect siberians with the world of gods.

The history is almost non-existant, that's why. And a bit... too little describing and brief
And in other news... Tere! Don't go posting Estonian here though

Idea 11/20
The main theme for your town is ICE but there is not much information about how your creatures, race and history coincide.

Race 9/15
Lack of emblem. Very little information how they fit into the homm environment, their way of life, their existence

History 7/15
Very vague history attempted.

Creature 11/15
Lackadaisical effort when unifying your creature lineup or coming up with better fitting creatures for your theme, there isn’t an explicit relation between them as well.
However, you have a very fitting ability for both Orge and Yeti.

Balance 7/10
Relatively balance for your creatures’ abilities and stats; although some of the creatures are overpowered, like gnoll and frog.

Appeal 6/10
Not very appealing imo.

Originality 5/10
You had penalized yourself directly.

Converted Total Score: 28/50

Race: 6

Promising, but unpolished due to lack of time. Slightly incompatible with the Ashan world in the current context (all the other factions are statal entities, driven by clear goals, this one still seems to live in semi-savagery)

History: 4

The part about the origins is pretty inspired. Misses out on about 1000 years of modern history, though.

Creatures: 8

Quite cohesive and loyal to the idea of primitivity

Balance: 5

Heroes 5 seems to be a lot more about special abilities than Heroes 3, and your creatures are missing on some. No flyer.

Originality: 8

Penalty -1 for not having a hero

Stuff to do with gaming: 35
-Creature lineup 7/10
-Mechanics 3/25

i dont think u need to explain about gnolls, they are already existing in fantasy world. your creature lineup is very interesting, although it is way too diverse for me. (7)

u almost dont have anything to explain how your town is going to work, and more than 1 creature has double attack. not a versatile town to play, imo. (3)

mechanics are very important to me, how versatile your town can be played, espacially with the hero skills, it will also be included in mechanics. i LOVE to see stats, as i will be able to do calculations that will pretty much show me how much dmg a troop can deal, etc.

Stuff to do with history/story etc: 25points
-History 0/10
-How your creatures are being gathered into the town 0/10
-other additional stuff 2/5

you have no history? im sorry but the small paragraph isnt history to me.

i still dont get it why frogs and orges live together..and the general idea of a civilization being formed in so odd a place. (2)

history and stuff, the usual. im an avid reader, so here my rating would be pretty strict.

Appeal: 15
-Appeal to female players 4/5
-General appeal 3/5
-Personal bias 1/5

if ur frog and sasquatch look cute.. (4)

general appeal, based on superficial looks that i am assuming your creatures going to be well designed (3)

i think that it there is too little for me to form a good impression on your town (1)

im aware of homm5 going to be a sink or swim game, hence appeal plays a big part in my rating too. ive noticed not many female players play homm, due to not liking many towns, i would like the town to attract more female players too; both for the players and the money to save HoMM.

Originality: 10/20
-Based on how much cliche there is in storyline, how well your idea is portrayed, creature is new, abilities are new and basically about new stuff.

you are pretty much original in town creation, except that tower in HoMM3 is on Snow, which pretty much gives me the impression that an artic town is going to look like tower, maybe perhaps build with ice/glass. (10)

it pays alot to be original.

Others: 0/5
-This includes other stuff i want to say 5

nothing more to comment on, your entry isnt detailed(0)

TOTAL: 30% (15/50)

Gerdash is this town finished? It seems not : (

Race: 7(I really like the idea of the faction, but it's too less of work)
History: 1(Thers just a mitology, really nice, but it has nothing to do with Ashan : ( )
Creatures: 7(I love the idea of "ancient like" mans called gnolls, but ther still to low differential, and all thee town is to weird)
Balance: 8(at faction balance is OK and I think that it wont affect world that much, in my opinion is not that bad because of EXTREMALLY neutrality)
Originality: 8(it would be 10, but creatures aren't that good, and even orginality rate should depend on compability of whole project to HommV)

Total: 31

This town has really interested me because of positive orginality, it could be something good...
(btw Gerdash are there really FROGS in the Syberian mythology? ...I don't know if you can answer after the end of rating or not, anyway it's interesting)

Artic Town
Race( 4+ 4)= 8 there’s no real unifying race, other than that I think there’s good compatibility with HOMM5
History( 1+3 )=2  (-2 for incompleteness)
Creatures(4 +5 )=9
Balance(3 +2 )=5 cannabolism doesn’t quite fit the ogres “vampire” skill. The creatures are almost all “walk and slash”.  Special skills are bland.
Originality=6

I really loved the basic idea of this.  A lot of potential.  Too many flaws though.
For the Nival contest Why don’t you turn the yeti into the main organizing race behind the faction. And write some stories for the history

Total Score= 30

How I graded these:
Race (Originality [1-5]+Compatibility with HOMM5 universe[1-5])
History (How interesting is it to me [1-5] +Compatibility with HOMM5 universe [1-5])
Creatures (Originality [1-5] +Internal Consistency [1-5])
Balance  (are the special skills inventive [1-5] + Does it have a variety of flyers, shooters, walkers, spell-casters [1-5]
Originality (all the originality scores added up and divided by two.  This means that creativity counts twice. [1-10])

31 to go

Comments: I think this is a simple but excellent idea – a snow town is missing from the game, and the unique mix of Siberian mythology and basic inhabitants from the north makes for a great creature line-up. The town seems very well balanced, aside from the fact that there is no flying creature in the town. The town needs to have more of a flavour, because most of the important statistics are missing, and there is not a huge development of their story after their creation. Had the hero types been developed, the originality score would have been higher. It is a shame that you didn’t discover the contest earlier, because this is an excellent interpretation of a Northern-Barbarian town.
