I don't like playing castle, because I don't know why I always run out of primary resources in the early stages. I prefer fortress (or stronghold)

I don't agree with that Sir William. I thik that monks are not good ranged units. They are level 5, have low stats, little health, aren't that fast, the damage isn't much to be proud of and the growth rate is not big enough to compensate for that.
So what's so good about them?

I know what you mean, maretti, but watch out. Don't tease william. You won't persuade him, you will only get in trouble. Heh, monks good...
Just because something shoots, doesn't mean its good. Magigs shoot, but 80% of shots will hit you own units.
Monks suck. I think that there should be a patch that would increase them. Maybe...

Monks/Zealots are probably less-powerful than you'd expect because the top Castle units needed to be balanced out. If Monks/Zealots were closer in stats to the Cavaliers and Angels above them, perhaps they'd be a little too strong.

Nevertheless, a little extra ranged attack can be useful. And since they're much safer than Magogs, that's another plus. Just don't have them shoot at Level 7 creatures and expect fireworks. They're better at sorting out other enemy creatures.

I agree with Supersonic. "Just because they shoot" is not enough of a reason to make the monks good creatures. And despite the need for balance the monks could have been stronger. I am not asking to make them have stats that are close to the cavalieres, but atleast don't make them weaker then the crusaders. I think they could have atleast 2 more points of defence and a wee bit more damage. HP is an issue, but they are not alone in that hole, as many ranged creatures lack HP. If talking of balance we can lok at the tower. The tower has one of the best level 7 creatures, the Titan, it has the best (or as some say second best, close mach with dreadknight) level 6 creature, the Naga queen, but still, it has the Master Genie. This unit, too, lacks HP (But has more than the Zealot), but is fast, has skills of 12 12 (not perfect but not horrible) and can cast spells. Still we don't have any trouble with balance here, do we? As for what Guitarguy said, yes, sorting out weak creatures is a role that is suitable for the monks, but they are level 5 creatures, so they should be more effective and should be able to be safely used for other roles (about attacking 7th level creatures, I won't recomend doing that with any 5th level creatures at all unless you have many and the 7th level enemies are only few).
As for a patch, is somebody still making those? HOMM III is a great game (The best so far in my oppinion) but it isn't new, so are there any new patches being released now days?

I just played as Castle right now and I still seem to think that Zealots are pretty good. I was running around with 15 of them and they made short work of most Level 1 through 5 creatures who got close. I think their full damage shooting is effective, just as long as you protect them when enemies get close. And nobody can complain about the full damage Zealots inflict on adjacent enemies.

Having a strong main hero also helps the Zealots' staying power. Without an experienced hero leading them, their full potential won't come out. Give them a Level 10+ Barbarian or Knight and their ranged attacks will hurt a lot more. Expert Archery and their attendant boosting artifacts will help a lot, too. In my opinion, Zealots work very well alongside tough, hard-hitting combatants: Crusaders, Champions, and Archangels.

I don't think we can expect patches for H3 anymore. 3DO's gone, and H5 is the new big deal. H3 isn't ancient history, but support for the game has probably waned since the company closed down.

Just because something shoots doesn't mean it's good. Just cast haste on a flier with speed of 11+ and your shooters will be toasted.

I also like ranged creatures much more then walkers or fliers, and yes, when used the right way the monks can rock, but any creature can be good if you use it the right way, and especialy if you use it aling side Archangels, Crusaders and Champions, not to mention a level 10+ might hero.

I do like roasting my own low level units with the magogs fireball, coz this helps to kill them faster and raise demons from their bodys with my pitlords...

Most of the time however, the upgrade for magogs is just too expensive to be worth while. I mean, only if they didn't take 5 merc, I woulda prolly used it more often

Yeah, that's the only type of roasting that is acceptable, but if you creatures are in hth and you need supportive firepower, you better have high diplomacy to take some elves or marksmen.

After all, let's stop fighting. If you think that zealots are good, that's okay. If you don't that's okay too.

Yes I agree. Supersonic is right, this "are the monks good or not?" conflict is as never ending as the "Titnas VS. Black Dragons" conflict, so lets just stop it, as there are other points to disscus about the Castle towns.
And about B.B.Q - ing your low level units with magogs... this is a single time use tactic, as your pit lords can only raise demons once, well unless you have more then one stack of them...

You start off usually with a solid army & might be more important to travel & gather as much resource & gold as you can to build Angels & a castle but depending on map & start of dif, that can be tough too.
COmmon  sense, if you know you cant make angels, they go for plan B.
I dont play castle much at all but when i do I dont usually use many of my units but angels or cavaliers, depending whats built first & whatever army I start with, until I really need fodder etc.
To me i dont think it's nessary to recruit troops you dont need until the battle.

True, during battle you need fodder to take counterattacks. But while exploring, monks speed will be... tough. That's why many people explore with one angel. Especially on Jebus!
