I use AVG Free Edition.
I have never got a single virus in my computer.
Also you must have this: Zonealarm, as that is the main thing that keeps out the hackers and stuff.
Hope this could be of some use to you, and I hope you get no viruses and hackers

AVG is like a Virus thing. It doesn't give you viruses but it helps you search for them and can prevent trojans and stuff.
Now ZoneAlarm, I never start my internet without it.
It keeps out all the hackers, and prevents them from gettin to your ports and sending viruses.
It prevents hackers from getting to port 1060 or something like that, and that is the port where hackers send Trojans and the real deadly viruses.
Yes it should stop Spyware as no virus or trojan or spyware which i don't know to much about, has ever stuffed up my machine.
Can you tell me what Spyware is?

EDIT: I looked up what is Spyware.
Is this what it is, this is a copy of google and here is what it says:
'Spyware and other unwanted software refers to software that performs certain tasks on your computer, typically without your consent. This may include giving you advertising or collecting personal information about you.'
Now Zonealarm can stop that, as noone knows of me hopefully
Now get the AVG antivirus program, and regulary update it, so that incase there are new viruses, then your AVG will know what they are and how to stop it, and definately get Zonealarm, as that is probably one of the best firewalls that you can get.
It stops many hackers getting into your system and stops them from putting hacks into your computer and ruining your machine and stealing your data and losing many of your things which is a nightmare whcih thankfully i have never had to gone through.
Well get these programs.
Here is a link to AVG free edition hope this links shows up in this post
avg
I cant get the Zonealarm link to pop up sorry for that .
Well I hope this helps you alot and hope you have fun without any of those stupid hackers, viruses and Spyware.

I keep getting these pop-ups on my computer, I know it's spyware because it keeps opening up even when I'm not connected to the internet (or tries to), and I've noticed alot of weird activity (like warnings about registry changes)

I've tried Ad-aware, which comes up with no results.
Spyware: S&D seems to detect the problem but even after I ask it to destroy it, on next startup the problem is still there.

I used to have AVG but not anymore, I will download it now as well as Zonealarm and nod32 and try those, thanks to this thread

Well, from the sound of your ad-thing, it seems you're in deep **** TA

best thing to do (if you can spare that) is copy your personal files, then reformat the hard-drive (erase all data, including operating system), then reinstall the operating system, then all the other applications, copy your personal files back, and you got rid of the spyware.

To prevent it from happening again, try Spyware Blaster, it's free and it helps prevent spyware before it gets to your computer. Also do take a Firewall (like Sygate personal Firewall, not the Windows Junk). Personally I find the firewall the most important 'anti-hacker' stuff, because it tells you whether an application sends some mysterious data or receives it, and you can either allow it or not (if you trust the application of course).

Anti-viruses are used for executables that you download, which may contain viruses. Normally I don't even run that application if there is a virus on it (even if the antivirus 'cleaned' it). Not worth it anyway.

You can also get viruses by Java scripts (html files ) and Flash programs or games. In general, you can get viruses by anything that is programmable.

By the way, a virus is not spyware.

You can always delete the file that Spyware: S&D finds manually.

Thanks for the help Death. I thought it might be a virus rather than spyware when it wasn't going away with the other problems but AVG seems to be picking it up (12 trojan horses found so far!)

I really hope I don't have to format again, I had to do it three times within the first three days of getting this computer. Taking my laptop to the technicians at school means you will get only one reply: 'Slurp it.' They're so damn lazy don't even look at it. Even if it's a problem with your keyboard or mouse, your hardrive formatted

And Joonas I think the problem is that S&D is getting rid of some of the files but not all, like the one that keeps bringing it back or something. That's what it seems to me anyway.

Wow. Compared to me, I only got one spyware my whole net surfing

Once I had a problem with the Power Source (in the computer), it didn't sent enough volts to the Motherboard for 2 buses if I recall (Input and memory). Note I did not know the problem for a long time.

The consequences? My mouse would suddenly stop from responding, and when I reset it worked again, until at seemingly random times it stopped responding (keyboard as well).

So I called some tech-support and they said it was a software problem and I had to reformat my hard-drive. But I was confident that wasn't the problem. How so? Well, I got inside the BIOS, and guess what? My keyboard stopped responding there as well. The BIOS is started before the boot stage, so software couldn't have been the problem.

When I finally get into the "Health" section of the BIOS (it displays some stuff like CPU & System Temperature, how many volts it gets, etc), and suddenly when the keyboard stopped responding, it said failed and I said "wtf"? then I realized it was the source's fault, not my mouse/keyboard (tried different mice btw), or motherboard, but rather the source who didn't sent enough 'volts' to the Motherboard's input port, therefore it stopped responding

Yeah, every tech-support said to me that it was a software problem (driver problem), even after I said to them that it blocked the BIOS as well.

but if it really is spyware (the 'ad-thing' is no hardware stuff sorry), you may either need to delete them manually (which is a pain if you use Windows because it has such a broad obfuscation of drivers/files), or reformat.

Next time play nicer on the net and watch what kind of pages you're viewing, so this thing won't happen again

The files can come back from windows back-up files so if it doesn't go away with AVG try disabling the back-up and do it again.

I normally run a spyware program every now and then to clean up, but when I noticed that my computer was going haywire I must have got all those Trojan things at the one time...

Downloaded a bunch of antivirus anti-spyware and Zonealarm and other programs to basically nuke anything bad in my computer and guess what?

Internet stops working.

Only after I shut down all of those programs it came back up again, only really slowly.

Either it's completely unrelated fault in my internet, or those programs are being so defensive they've blocked the entire net

And yeah technicians can be like that. When they have to fix problems all day like 'my computer won't start up' 'what happens?' 'it says wrong  password' 'take off caps lock' 'wow thanks!', who can blame them

Every country in the world should crack down on this crap. Anybody who gets caught writing, distributing or otherwise contributing to malware or hacking should have their freekin balls cut off. And if they don't have balls, find something else to cut off.

People like to blame Microsoft or Windows for this crap, but that's like blaming the locksmith when some @$$hole breaks into your house. If it weren't for the thieves I wouldn't need to spend my money to put a lock on my door in the first place.

I shouldn't need firewalls, AV programs, spyware scanners, security updates for Windows and all the other crap I have to deal with because of a bunch of ****ing pussies who think they are hot **** because they can hide in their little worm holes and write programs to invade MY private property. They're like mosquitoes. They are annoying as hell and as soon as you swat one of them, there are a hundred more to take their place.

I say cut off their balls. This crap shouldn't be tolerated and the penalties for violations should be very strict. The US state of Virginia got it right with their new anti-spam law. The first two people prosecuted got several years in prison.

I like mosquitoes, they remind us that we're not completely on the top of the food chain...

What do you think, how much money do antivirus companies earn by selling anti-virus/ad/spy/whateverware programs? Do you really think it's in their interests to stop internet diseases?

Hackers are the spine of the internet. You are free to hate them if you want, but that's hardly going to change anything.

I use Kaspersky, God knows why... I hate that thing, but just can't uninstall it - it was my first antivirus, we go way back

Can someone help me.

I downloaded the above mentioned software, may sound a little extreme.

First I used Spyware SD to get rid of spyware.
Then I used AVG to get rid of the virus.
Then I downloaded nod32 and Zonealarm, and also a registry cleaner which I thought would help speed up my computer.
I never really used nod32, the registry got halfway through scanning before I could use it, and Zonealarm was preventing all this stuff.

I alowed firefox to go through Zonealarm so the internet was working.

Then it all went haywire. Computer running extremely slowly, blue screen of death twice, and the internet keeps saying "connection timed out" and I have to keep refreshing to open up a page.

I wasn't sure if it was the software or which one I uninstalled the registry cleaner, Zonealarm and nod32...

Still the same, Internet extremely frustrating.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do? Formatting seems to be a last resort.
