Hire Which Worker???
ok, i was washing my mums car and i was still washing when my sister went inside, passing my mother on the way. so this got me thinking. . .
you own a car wash company. its big but not the biggest and it makes you some good money. you recently had an employee quit as they are moving to some place far away, they were vague on the details. but anyway, you need a new employee. you advertise and and drop hints but in the end only 2 people apply
you are speaking to them and cant really pick one over the other so what better way to decide than through a car wash 
you are very talented at making cars dirty and so you are able to make 2 cars, same car to last detail, equally dirty. you tell the applicants to clean the cars.
1 car is placed on one side of the car wash HQ and the other car on the other side, so each person cannot see what the other person is doing so the other person doesnt influence thier washing. each person has the exact same access to the same things, water, soap, everything. so they are equally matched
you sit in your office doing something fun, browsing HC for example  . and one of the applicants come in after a certain amount of time. Lets call this quicker guy Kevin
Kevin is done, so you tell him to go away (maybe a little nice than that ) and to wait for a call. and so you note the time Kevin finishes and you wait. 2-3 minutes later the other guy comes in, we will call this guy Jerry.
you tell Jerry to go away aswell and also wait for a call. you also note the time that Jerry finished washing the car.
Now you are finished browsing HC and so you think to yourself
Which car is washed better and who do i hire???
Kevin finished first. but does this mean that Kevin does a good job quickly or does kevin do a bad job quickly??? good or bad job???
Jerry finished later. does this mean that jerry did a good job at a longer time??? or did Jerry do a bad/average job in a longer time period???
so which person do you expect to have done a better job at washing a car? Kevin, or Jerry who finished 2-3 minutes after Kevin???
and who would you hire? Kevin or Jerry?

I would hire Kevin, because he finished earlier I assume that he has more confidence in his car washing abilities, whereas Jerry who is not as confident in himself had to take extra time to search and fix minor problems

I would hire Kevin definately. A fast worker who does a good job is always good for business.

what if kevin did a bad job on washing the car because he spent less time on it???
remember you havent seen the condition of the cars yet. you dont know who did a better job

I would absolutely NOT hire anyone until I see the job they did. Doing otherwise is perharps the stupidest thing one can do.
I've seen too much HR stupidity to repeat the same mistakes myself.
I can answer more questions for you if you want.
Would I hire someone who wears a suit or a t-shirt? I don't care, I won't hire either until I know how well they can do their job.
Would I hire someone who looks all-knolwdgeable and very confident and tells me about how good he is or someone who is a bit on a shy side? I don't care, I won't hire either until I know how well they can do their job.
