QUESTION
I’m new to this game and I find it very confusing when you have a stack with the same speed as your enemy.
Lets say that you have an army of skeletons and you attack a stack of gnolls. Because you are the attacker you will always be the one who goes first, right?
But if you also have a stack of wights which has a speed of 6, then your skeletons wont move first, right?
Is this all wrong and does anyone know where I can read about this stuff?

Always make sure you KNOW, what army will play next. The rules are these:
a.First comes speed. If there's a stack that is faster than any other, it plays first.
b.When both sides have stacks of same speed, in the first round the attacker gets the first move. In castle defenses, however, the defending party has first strike
(as the attacker was preparing siege)
c.If both sides have stacks of same speed, the rounds go zig-zag. Once all stacks of that speed have moved, next lower speed army moves and if both sides have
that speed in their ranks, then again moves side, that hadn't had made the last move.
d.On every side, armies with same speed play in order of appearance on the screen, when the battle begun. So, if you have two armies of the same speed, the
ORIGINALLY upper plays always sooner, even if it moves below the other army.
e.The 'wait' function needs some explaining. A unit that uses 'wait' in it's regular turn will have to play within the battle turn. After ballistas on both sides fire, a
sub-turn for waiting creatures begins, following all the rules about speeds and zig-zagging, but the speeds go in reversed order, from slowest to fastest
creatures, So that the fastest creatures play last.

Just a quickie...
It has already been determined that the battlefield in HoMM4 will be larger, but will the heroes be able to have more than just seven stacks under his/her leadership?

Of course.
Of course, Shae, this is the easiest thing to do in H4 I think.

necromancy
I have played some games with necropolis towns, because I found those free skeletons so interesting. But it seems I get fewer skeletons than my skill suggests. I have for example expert necromancy, 2 amplifiers and a vampire's cowl, so I expect 60% skeletons. But then I get just 40% or 50%. Or is this because the free upgrade to skeleton warriors (if all slots full) costs you some skeletons? I always make sure my slots are full so I get warriors.

Yes, if you fight with skels warriors the percentage will be lower.

scout holding troops
Mocara said:2) At the end of the day I always have one of my scouts hold the slow troops for my main hero so he will get to move further the next day.
Q: How, then, does your scout catch up to your super-fast Hero the next day? And, if you have a chain of scouts, why not just pass all the slow ones to the head of the line via caravan? Your Hero could pick them up later.

One that wasn't explained correctly was the tower vs. necro question -- the tower would win, because, if you've had a hero outside a necropolis, you would see that you see whatever the unit (or in this case, town) can see, because they cut through the fog just as if they had moved there (without the movement). Tower and Necropolis would be my fav. 2 towns, heh.

Hi Retropoet,
Your main hero is usually fighting which means weaving on and of course and therefore your scout moving in a straight line and often on a road can keep up.
If not you need to leave another scout ahead one turn so he can hold them while the trailer scout flags the mines and picks up the resources that the main battled for.
