How do you play an open map?
Hi,
I know how to play closed.. you just run around boosting your stats and hope for a good tope, then break through to the center and hope you get the extras first, but how do you play an open map?
Of course everyone can play their own way, but Im sure there are some good general tactics that are applicable to most open maps, like what heroes are good.. What does your expanding forces want to conquer first, and what can tip the scales?
Itīs kinda hard to start playing open maps when you are new to it, risking your non-noob points and MvsM gold, knowing that you face someone who plays them alot.

Well...
First I put something on the corners of the map, like a tankard or a salt shaker, to stop it rolling back up in my face. That is really annoying.
What do people do after this?

Carefully
How do you play an open map? Carefully .
As a generality, keeping an active hero chain for reinforcements to your main hero is a good idea. Keeping gold in reserve for surrenders if you get surprised is a good idea too. But then, you did come into his area brandishing your broadsword. Other than thatit plays much like a closed map with the significant difference that more work is required to build the heroes. On open maps mortal heroes are fighting many battles with minor outcomes. On closed maps the fighting is less subtle; two deities glowing with divine invulnerability and wearing equipment from Zeus' own treasure chamber clash in a meteoric shower of magic and might that leaves scorched earth in its wake and rivals Homerian epics.

Wrong again Jinxer.
Looking at your profile I don't see that you play any.
Which goes back to my original point "People play closed maps because they CANNOT handle open maps."
Defending against a rush is one of many skills closed maps players have no clue about.

The ultimate open map is a random, there really is no time frame, and can be a total surprise when atacked. The essence of opens is to surprise your opponent, catch him off guard, which is not necessarily a rush. Its pretty hard to surprise someone on hg or such, unless they open the guard for you, and you attack day 9 lol.
Play randoms for the total open map play package.

I kinda agree w/ you rychen.. except, you cannot play randoms on toh, or at least you are taking a great risk if you do.
Randoms, quite often, are just blatently unfair. I have played a random, where the enemy had a giant resource filled territory, while i had a tiny hole in the wall which was underground, and my ore mine was guarded from day 1 by a pack of cavaliers.... i need not go on.
If and when they come out with a GOOD random map maker for Heroes 4, then I will play randoms... until then; NO. Especially not for toh.
It's like playing russian roulette to play randoms on toh... of course, its your life, you can do what u want with it.. hehe

wrong, jinxer boy
Open maps you cannot rush, this isnt command & conquer or red alert. Tank rushes dont work here. No, it simply means outsmarting you opponent, scout battles, and being on your toes that you cant roam freely without paying attention to your opponents movements & counters.

Vesuvius BOY hasnt played beltway!
After talking to Promethius he claims that you are at your opponents town on day 3 of game duking it out. And if you lose you go searching for another town. So day 3 is not concidered RUSH?
Maps like Last battle that are open, for example, I agree you cannot rush. That is a very fun map, even though I havnt played it this season I played it several times last season. Believe it or not I rather enjoy many encounters with my opponent, just not to fond of day 3 battles right outside my main town. Guess I like scout battles and such that happen out on the map.
And I agree with rychen 100% about randoms. I have been playiing mostly randoms lately, and it is all different becasue you hve no idea where you opponent is. So there will be no day 3 castle attacks, but you will and can have tons of open field battles with scouts and mains even.
As I told Mocara, I come from a different era. Mocara , Ves, Pro are all from the heroes 2 throwbacks, that are stuck in heroes2 Mode. =) To each there own! I say play what ya like. I grew up in a world of heroes3 with mirrored closed maps. So thats what I got used to.
I guess what I need to do is just schedule a day to just play Mocara over and over and over on beltway just for fun, and see if I can get hooked on that style. Prolly could get 10-20 games in about 4 hours so should learn quit a bit.
Mocara you up for the training session??
BTW Ves watch who you calling BOY! =)

its about controlling the map
Basically with an open map, you try to control most the territory. Its a war strategy, usually controlling more of the land gives you better chances at winning. people love open maps for the whole strategy of trying to control the land. sure heavily played maps like Beltway or Battle for honor have more set patterns how to control the land or attempt to, but if both players are very experienced on the map it makes for a great game. the complaining mostly comes when 1 person knows map much better than the other.
but hey, that is true with any map when 1 knows it better than another.
randoms are random, so not referring to them

Hmm perhaps you should work on your closed maps strategy first?
On BFH-style maps, scout wars are one thing to take seriously. The newbie would send scouts with 1 imp on and lose them all fast. A more experienced player would send magic hero with arrow and 6 imps split or a pack of low level he can do without. An expert like Frank would send many heroes in a certain pattern so that he can get full army to anywhere on map and kill all your scouts.
Me I would get a blackdragon in refugee

just a side note: never put refugee camps on open maps, a black drag alone prolly can win the game (thats why i would remove it from that silly rush map desert war too )

Throwback
Hehe. I love being called a throwback. And Jinxer will never spell my name right
But seriously, I dont remember this conversation; I did post something about it maybe.
Ive played many closed maps (not just this season) and Ive enjoyed games on them. I play them with equal passion and have even played randoms (but not enough; they are visually unappealing to me; I like pretty maps). I appreciate the roundness this gives me as a player and I do not choose to be critical of any particular one. I am critical of myself if I play one category too much or too little, because I am reducing my own competitiveness. In order to play all types of maps I have to encourage good opponents to play them all and that is my angle when I promote a certain map style.

I am doing that with closed map master Lord of Kaos right now and we keep switching colors each game.
Lotsa fun.
Paper rock scissors.
Btw Andi is right. No refuge camps on open maps.

Sure, for playing open maps need more expirience and good skill in heroes. Small mistakes very soon can stay big.
No "free" random relics, agressive 7lvl monsters and utopias without concurents fighting for it(as on most closed maps- each side have his own utopia). Game during all turns very stressfull, not like on closed maps- who will got better utopia, magic guild in 4th town , or find more free relics in the sea or tombs .
Open maps for brave men !
