Every faction got changed lore-wise.
In the Third sequel of the game the Dungeon was a combination of mostly mythical creatures living underground.

Now it is the city of Dark Elves, which succesfully adapt into the new enviroment after beeing casted out of their former country.
They conquered the minotaurs and started to use undeground living reptilians.

I'm not a fan of dark elves but I quickly catched the new idea and now I'm satisfied.

And - for quake's sake - we don't have to see green troglodytes and the ugly beholder's dwelling anymore, and those two elements efficiently ruined the atmosphere of an ancient, forsaken city.

Dungeon had hydras/minotaurs/medusas/harpies from ancient greek mythology. Making it a dark elf town riding lizards wasn't the greatest idea ever. Dungeon is about creatures found in mazes and other treasure guardians like dragons. The warlock is some lonely wizard living in a tower that seeks no contact with the rest of the world, he breeds  monsters and creates magical mazes only to ward off intruders.

I guess that's exactly what I liked so much about H3 Dungeon The H5 Dungeon technically can't be dungeon at all, the only thing making it "Dungeon" are the Warlocks, the Blackies, and the whole slavery concept.

Ok, I guess that makes it Dungeon, but sheerly for degrading the minotaurs to lowly tier 3s it should already get flamed when compared to H3.

Yes, so it has an actual RACE now and a whole philosophy... But seriously, how much has that EVER mattered for DUNGEON? We're not talking about a human town here, this is DUNGEON.

Medusa and Hydra.... Bah, I hate the fact they both fit so well in both Dungeon and a reptile town... It's such a dreadfull choice to make. Actually, I think I'm gonna make a poll on that!

I think the biggest problem is, there are way too many cool creatures to make up for Dungeon that you'll curse the fact you'd have to drop some in favour of others.

Oh, PS: Let's not forget about atmosphere and ambiance either. H3 simply ruled, it felt so greasy and lived-through... So evil and sinisterly dark and magical with all the glowth, the mushrooms, the mana vortex, that lone Dungeon castle up on the elevation within the cave, the gold-covered dragon's cave....

THEN we see H5... A statue with stalactites...... Wow..... How cool.... NOT... The townview alone would be reason enough not to play Dungeon, it doesn't feel like 'home', it feels abandoned.

The H3 dungeon is more interesting. The H5 dungeon definately looks cool, though. The H5 heroes are also a lot more impressive. Empower spell and Warlocks luck, yes please!

Black dragons, manticores and troglodytes have nothing to do with greek mithology, tho. See the rule? Take random monsters and put them into dungeon, there..

What makes a dungeon, then? Poor inventions like "scorpicores" ?

Gotta love the minotaur fans. Ok, we already know you want them as tier 5-7, don't be so biased

Yeah, led by who - harpies? Cmon, it's much more logical this way. Dark elves faction, using powerful monsters as slaves/soldiers.. not a random bunch of creatures that in logic should be killing each other.

Hope you don't include troglodytes and scorpicores..

FOr me it looked utterly stupid and without any plan at all - random buildings put here and there. Only the dragon caves looked cool, but the maze was pitiful.

I don't like the whole racial hegemony crap in Heroes 5. It was so much better when the different factions were based on ideology and terrain rather than race. The only faction based on race in the previous games was Knights/Castle/Haven. Sorceress/Rampart/Preserve was the forest/nature faction, Fortress was the swamp/beast faction, and Dungeon was the underground/crazy experiments faction.

The Dark Elves are just stupid and derivative, a rip off of Warhammer. Plus they don't even look like they belong underground. The Dungeon faction in Heroes 3 looked like they were an underground race. Who do the Dark Elves have to dig and navigate the tunnels and caves? How did the Dark Elves even adapt to living underground so fast? The Warlocks in Heroes 3 actually used the caves for their crazy experiments. They let their creations loose in the caves. They had Troglodytes dig their tunnels and Minotaurs could navigate the caves.

I don't get the whole rucus about the new Dungeon.
It's simply different

Just as people tell that Dark Elves do not match underground - You can tell the same 'bout Warlocks.
Underground is the domain of the Dark Elves not for the first time in a Fantasy World. But Warlock's tend to live not exacly underground, but rather in their wicked towers in the outskirts of some kingdoms.

Imho many people here are irritated becouse now the name Dungeon refers to this city. Would be better if it was, for exemple, "Cavern" , "Abyss" or "Delve"?

Then again it was not the Warlocks but the Dungeon Overlords who ruled the previous incarnation.  The Warlocks lived in their own "wicked towers" in Enroth, and simply fled to the underground nation of Nighon when they were overcome by Roland Ironfist's armies because they had nowhere else to go.

Yes?  I don't know, maybe.  At least we actually had a proper Dungeon previously.  This thing is indeed more of a Cavern so the name probably would fit better.

I hardly can think of a traditional "Overlord" character in a Fantasy universe. For me the name could also fit into inferno.

To tell You the truth - I cannot see a literal "dungeon" neither in Heroes 3, nor in V. The town in the Third sequel reminded me of a Greek antiquity, burried in time by some seismic cataclysm. Not of a true underground prison. Now we have a monstrous cavern, in which one single stalactite is huge enough to build a castle.

And I will never forget games they made, as some titles - like Syndicate, Syndicate Wars, Dungeon (irony) Keeper, Theme Hospital...And I don't give a snow about graphics. I'm not the type of player who pisses his pants when he sees a new shader method, or starts running in circles screaming how the game is better than older games becouse it have better gfx or textures.

I agree we have to open out minds to new concepts ideas and general thoughts and things.
We cant have a game next time that takes the same concepts as heroes 3 with better graphics, its what people wanted for heroes 5 and according to what some of you biased and when you get angry , unthinking H3 fans say heroes 5 is a failiure.
New dungeon is quite cool. The whole stalagmite thing isnt perfect but i think it fits the matriarchal mood of dungeon.  And while id have loved a few black dragons swooping somewhere i think deserted towns are good too. you cant fit in too many details always.

Too many details? hm...
Imo Dungeon should have the deserted atmosphere in the newest game. Afterall this is the home of matriarchal, clan based society. Assasinations, stealth, intrigues...
It is true that perhaps it is too empty, but the only thing that would fit would be some shadow occasionally moving along the walls or shades dancing in the red light of the altar of sacrifices.

Well, every tradition has to start somewhere.

Of course, it's more or less out the window in Heroes.  In what other traditions have you seen Centaurs, Dwarves and Elves cooperating in a single kingdom, or demon-like aliens falling from outer space and thus provoking space-travelling civilizations to send their godlike servants to summon enormous crystals in order to destroy the world?  None, that's right.

That was in reference to the actual castle within the Heroes III town screen, which sure as heck looks like as close to an underground prison-like structure as is reasonably possible to me.  With similar logic I could argue that the grassy plains around Erathian towns aren't Castles, or that the swampy areas in Tatalia aren't Fortresses.  The name comes from the central building.

well,H3 was just fine, and dun forget that b4 makin H3 3D0 had alot of might and magic makin exp,and then they tried somethin diffrent, and they toatly failed, that's what ubi is doin, ubi is tryin somethin diffrent, but alil bit at a time, they couldn't risk it all to be diff,so they're just checkin to see if it'll be ok with the fans, and clearly not, since some of u dun wanna just let go of the old H3 and try another new things in the homm series.

The Drow of dnd were actually elves transformed into dark elves by the Seldarine. They've adopted to living underground with dark vision and light sensitivity.
