No problem

I should have mentioned - you don't need to create the shadow yourself.  All you need are images of the creature with the blue background for transparency.  The DefMaker program automatically creates a shadow for it when the "blue" image is converted.

Oh, that simplifies things.  I can certainly do the blue background.

Thanks for the tip.

Hi, I'm having a problem. I'm doing a mod that will replace Green Dragons with Firebirds/phoenix animations. The defs are already replaced and work well, but I would to know in which file I can find the portraits.
Thanks in advance.

Well...this might not be the right thread to post this question in, but I did use much of this tutorial to do what I have so far, and I didn't want to start a new thread on my first post here, so I'm posting in this one.

I wanted to make the map avatar for the wizard class more gender neutral ('cause I don't want my female mages to have a beard...just personal preference) so...

1) I used Resedit to extract the AH05_.def (that's the where I think the wizard map avatar is).

2) I used Defview to extract the 45 .bmp frames.

3) I used Photoshop to edit out the beard from all the bitmaps I extracted from AH05_.def, and I made sure they were done in 256 colors.

4) I used Defmaker by adding all 45 bitmaps and selecting the option $49 (Heroes on Map)

5) I used the H3Lod files (that I put into my Heroes III data directory and created a batch file to add AH05_.def into H3sprite.lod.

Well, it did alter H3sprite.lod, but now the game crashes whenever a wizard is to appear on the map. I know I screwed up somewhere...does anybody know how to make custom hero avatars for the map and could help me out? It would be greatly appreciated.

Modify TWCRPORT.DEF and CPRSMALL.DEF, and if you want good mod then must modify AVWDRAG0.DEF. May be the dwelling too.

@MrBill

Make sure all image have one color table, some def i made have this problem too, and i too lazy to fix this

Thanks for the reply T2_2112. Unfortunately, I don't think the color table is the issue, as I didn't alter any of the original colors in the table (the files were already in indexed color mode), and I used the dropper tool to select only from colors that were already present in the original bitmaps. I'm wondering if there is some key step I'm missing somewhere.

T2_2112, have you ever changed how the hero map avatars look? If you or any other willing party has experience with changing map avatars, I can supply the 45 bitmaps in a less than 1 MB zip file if anyone wants to experiment with changing this one.

Thanks T2_2112, I change the adventure defs and work right, but I'm having a problem with both TWCRPORT.DEF&CPRSMALL.DEF->How do you modify the .pcx images that are inside the def? Any programs to use?
For the moment I don't think on changing the dwelling, but maybe later I'll look at it.

Thanks T2_2112 for the link for the custom portraits, I may use that info sometime. By map avatars, I mean the little guys on horseback that represent the heroes and move around on the maps.

As for the color table, I'm pretty sure that's not the problem...I think the issue is more complicated. I think it may have something to do with the animation. When I exported the .def from Defview, the file seems to have lost the "+" (plus signs) that were associated with some of the frames. I'm not sure how to add those back, as I don't think I can use the creature wizard in Defmaker for the map avatars (at least I don't know how to). Unless someone has some ideas how to add those back into the .def file, I've pretty much given up changing the map avatars for now.

Edit: (Update) I think part of the problem is there are 4 files that need to be changed for map avatars and I only changed one (this is probably one of the things causing a crash). For the wizard, there are AH05_.def, AH05_.msk, AH05_E.def, and AH05_E.msk. If I get the time, I'll try editing the other three files and see if that fixes the problem.

I think no
If I'm right on that guide if you place the portraits in data folder and rename them to match with the ones you want to change, they'll overwrite the 'normal' ones, righ? But the problem is that I don't know how to extract the portraits(since I don't have them).
Don't you know any programs to do that¿?

And btw, I looked with defview both CPRSMALL&CDDRAG(last one is dragon sprites), and realised that both are composed of .pcx images. Shouldn't be this like changing the sprites of a unit?
Thanks in advance

Srry, but again you missed one thing...What I need it's to know how to change .pcx images that composed a def file(CPRSMALL&TWCRPORT).
With defview you can extract them, but no replace them, which is what I need...
In that guide you can make gisf, but It still need to be a def.

Does anyone know a program to modify def files?(not just to view them)

Hy!

I have some problem...
I used the ResEditor to extract what I have need.
I made the changes and save the files.
I tried to insert my graphics in the H3AB's BMP lod with the FileManager of the ResEdit. The prog asked me that I want to overwrite the existing file? I answered YES.
I close ResEdit and run H3AB.
And there were no changes! I thought when I sad yes to the overwrite the graphics are changed but NO!
I simply tried to change the background of the main screens (The main menu's 3 bgs)...
What did I wrong?

how do i do this right?? (inside creature wizard)

creature moves from left to right (first step) do i need to choose the spesific pictures like 1 2 & 3 wich is the walking pictures.
next step is attacking, do i only need to choose the atacking pictures wich i made in photoshop? i have recoloured the titan but it has 74 moves(pictures)
